    Providing an error (rather than just going into a permanent validating state) would be really useful. Better still would be to validate the frontend hostname length and provide some feedback in the Azure portal - similar to the realtime CNAME record validation.

    The 64 character limit for auto-generated certificates is pretty non-obvious - especially given that this is specific to the way the certificate is being created - ie. using the Common Name rather than a Subject Alternative Name to store the domain name. X509 CNs are limited to 64 characters, but I'm pretty sure SANs can contain DNS names of any length up to 253 characters. ie. the 64 character limit is not inherent in the X509 standard, just the Common Names.
