Thanks, This is a common ask from our customers and something we are seriously thinking about. In the meantime you can use Azure Data Factory to “delete” the cluster and you can use persistent metastore using Azure SQL and persistent store like Azure Data Lake Store or Azure Blob which will make it seem like it is “shut down”. Thanks for your feedback. Rashim Gupta (HDInsight Engineering team)

Qubole, a Microsoft ISV Gold Cloud Platform partner provides a serverless "multi-engine" solution for Spark, Hive, Hadoop, with Presto and Airflow. It has workload aware autoscaling so clusters automatically start and stop and scale up and down as required to support actual demand at any given point of time. Thus, you only use the compute you need when it is absolutely required to execute jobs. Having a serverless Azure solution reduces data admin support time, job failures, and frees data admin's up to support new business initiatives and ensures business SLAs are met. Qubole has free test drive at: https://azure.qubole.com/users/sign_up
and you can learn more about Qubole on Azure at: https://www.qubole.com/company/partners/partners-microsoft-azure/. Qubole also offers free two week pilot in your Azure subscription. Contact dlassiter@qubole.com if interested. Qubole Presto has a PowerBI connector that allows direct query of the Azure Data Lake making data lake analytics simple and accessible for business analysts.

[Update] Thanks for your continued feedback on this capability! Rest assured that we are tracking this request closely along with several other platform capabilities our customers have requested. In the meanwhile, you can leverage cluster scaling capability to adjust HDInsight cluster size according to your varying compute needs. Azure Data Factory is another option you can explore for scheduling jobs with automatic creation and deletion of clusters: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/data-factory-data-transformation-activities/

The Qubole Presto offering with PowerBI supports all the frequently used data types on the Azure Data Lake including Apache ORC, Parquet, avro, csv, etc. Apache Presto is an open source ANSI compliant SQL in memory engine that allows PowerBI users with SQL skills to write queries to pull data into a Presto notebook and/or PowerBI. Qubole offers presto as a service on Azure with workload aware autoscaling which is serverless minimizing your compute costs on the Azure Data Lake for Azure Data Lake analytics.

The Qubole connector works with PowerBI, Tableau, Looker and other BI tools.

Qubole a Microsoft ISV partner has a published PowerBI connector that allows you to do direct and federated queries with PowerBI on the Azure Data Lake and other data sources. Qubole offers a free hands on workshop onsite with PowerBI users to enable this access and is very affordable tool to add to your Azure analytics tool kit. You can learn more about the PowerBI connector at this blog: https://www.qubole.com/blog/qubole-brings-federated-queries-to-microsoft-power-bi-with-presto/ and here is the Qubole documentation on the feature: https://docs.qubole.com/en/latest/partner-integration/powerbi-integration/powerbi-setup-connector.html. Also, the hands on workshop is valued at $20,000 since Qubole provides free architect support to deploy Qubole in your Azure subscription to prepare for the workshop and a free two week pilot with architect support for your PowerBI analysts. Contact Dave Lassiter at dlassiter@qubole.com if you are interested in the free workshop/pilot offer.
