Thank you for taking time to post this issue!
I can confirm that Design option in SSMS Object Explorer is not available for temporal (system-versioned) tables.
Unfortunately, we do not plan to include a fix for this issue in the upcoming release.
We might include it as an improvement in a future release, though.
How important for you is to have this option available for temporal tables?
We're about 20 release further now. Any plans to include this basic feature?
Bug still exists in SSMS 17.9 (14.0.17285.0). Tested while conntected to a database using temporal tables on SQL Server Express 2017 CU11 (CU11).
All that needs to be done is to fix SSMS so it actually show the "table" context menu instead of the "reports" context menu for "(System-Versioned)" tables when connected to Express edition databases. Something that's already done when connected to Developer or Standard edition databases...
It's not like this bug hasn't been reported before either:
Upgraded my SQL Server 2017 Express edition to Developer edition to test this and the SSMS context menu on "System Versioned" tables now works correctly. That confirms this issue is specific to the context menu shown on "System Versioned" tables on the Express edition.
Any idea when this is going to get fixed?
Oh, encountered this on SSMS 17.7 which was release after January 11 when this issue went "under review".
Encountered the same issue and scoured the web for a solution. Looks like this might be specific to SQL Server Express edition? At least, various posts on stackoverflow indicate the context menu functions correctly for enterprise/other SQL Server editions...Dieter Verfaillie supported this idea ·
