You can't always move classic resources, so this is not workable across the board.

Yes please. Resource groups have been implemented and now we have a list of resource groups with the the tag CloudServices imbedded in the name. Yesterday I opened a case because I could not understand why all of our Cloud Services were appearing in the Resource Group display on the portal. Seems that when Resource Groups were implemented, the exact name used for Cloud Services was used for Resource Groups. Only thing is that our naming convention requires the type of resource to be the suffix of the name - so it looked like the portal was broken and it confused everyone including the Microsoft tech. We got it worked out, but we really need a rename function so we can get the embedded Cloud Service suffix replaced. At this point you guys should really know better and always give the ability to rename something. Thank you.

We’re thinking about some networking updates across the platform that will enable this feature. Thanks for your feedback

Thank you Tabrez. It would be very helpful to be able to rename Cloud Services as well as Storage Services. Generally what happens to me is that I make a clerical error in the name and then the PowerShell programmers curse my name for all eternity because I have broken our naming convention.

Our apologies for not updating this ask earlier. Renaming Blobs is on our backlog, but is unlikely to be released in the coming year. Today, you can use the “Copy Blob” API as a workaround.

Using the Azure Files service you can address Azure Storage like a network share using the SMB2.1 protocol.  This enables usage of normal Windows API’s to rename files and directories.  You can get started with the Files service by visiting https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/storage-dotnet-how-to-use-files.

For any further questions, or to discuss your specific scenario, send us an email at azurestoragefeedback@microsoft.com.
