The status of this item has been moved back to Under Review. We initially planned to move to VHDX support as part of our support for HyperV Gen2 VMs, but we ended up using the VHD format for Gen2 VMs as well. Some aspects of the Azure Infrastructure do not cleanly support VHDX OS or data disks. So this feature is dependent on some of these internal services being updated which is an ongoing process.

Coming up on 5 years of "looking into it". Needed this yesterday. Let's go!

    Hi folks,

We have shipped a public preview of integration with AAD DS: https://azure.microsoft.com/blog/azure-active-directory-integration-for-smb-access-now-in-public-preview/

What we have in preview is a first step along a much larger roadmap for integration with AAD/AD for authentication and authorization. As the blog post says, this initial preview is really about Windows cloud VM access to the Azure file share with an AAD identity. Future refreshes to this feature will add non-Windows (Linux, macOS, etc) support, and the ability to mount the Azure file shares on-premises with your AAD identity. You can learn more about this in our Ignite session as well (at around 22:00): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMzh2M66E9o

We’ll keep you updated on our progress. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to continue posting feedback on this feature below.

    Thanks,

    Will Gries
    Program Manager, Azure Files

Why not have a 99.5 SLA for single-instance VMs and leave the higher 99.95 SLA for servers configured in an availability set? Unless you can justify an N+1 scale out strategy it's just way too cost-prohibitive for SMB clients to justify availability sets. Many of our small clients won't pay for that but won't go to something with no SLA. At least 99.5 would be something. I wonder how much $$ MS leaves on the table due to customers that won't go to something with no SLA or no cost-effective way to get an SLA.

We have considered this. I wonder whether a simple Key-Value tagging would meet your needs here? This is something in our plans.

Thanks for the valid suggestion. Your feedback is now open for the user community to upvote which allows us to effectively prioritize your request against our existing feature list and also gives us insight into the potential impact of implementing the suggested feature

Virtual console access and ability to boot to ISO for recovery environments is critical, especially given the weaknesses of Azure backup. Lack of virtual console, lack of ability to boot to an ISO, and Azure backup weaknesses are the biggest inhibitors for us to move our customers to the cloud.
