Lol I forgot about this! Got an email alert about the item, which reminded me of it. This is why we stopped using Azure AS. I'm glad someone is looking at this.

Pleas see Kay’s comment below. Now that AS works on PQ, this of course becomes much easier. However still some work & testing to make each connector available, so likely will evaluate which are more suited to traditional BI and prioritize accordingly

We do support service principals. The next SSMS will make them a lot easier to set in roles and we also have some client lib changes that will make them easier to use. Now you can use them by getting the token yourself and passing it in as the password on the connection string.

How would this work when the metadata is somewhat different? I am curious because this concept would help with semver deployments, but Tabular drops a tables data when the metadata changes (i.e. A column is deleted). I am curious how you would solve for this if the cache is serving multiple metadata stores?

You are going to pay a pretty big price for this. Even encoding a guid as a integer this will be pretty non cardinal, and you are looking at potentially a 16 bit column in the dictionary.

Look at the reason why you need the unique field, and if there is another way to solve: the only time you absolutely need a surrogate key is in type 2 slowly changing dimensions.
