Please think of Search as a microservice part of our application living outside which we call using an HTTP REST call, hence we need to know just like we would in a microservice or n-tier architecture how are my APIs\Services performing. You would want to know how many failed, what was the latency, and so many more like that. Application Insights gives you this holistic application map in which search service is also part of your solution. Log Analytics is an OK from a logging solution but for APM you need something like Application Insight integrated fully with Azure Search.

Hi Magnus. This is currently unplanned by us for our road map. Some context and feedback for you on this.

First, to do the replication itself to the secondary region you need RU/s sufficient to support the request rates for the primary region itself. Replication and writing to the secondary region itself is not free so there needs to be sufficient throughput provisioned to do that.

Second, for the secondary region to be able to function as the primary should a fail over occur, the replica region itself needs sufficient throughput to function as the primary.

Thanks again for your suggestion. Will mark as unplanned for now in case circumstances ever do change.

We are exploring product improvement opportunities in the area of hybrid link between SQL Server (on-premises and VM) and Managed Instance which will enable near real-time data replication. This will not be a stretch DB, but a replication technology based on distributed availability groups (AG). If this might interest you, we invite you to provide your feedback to the engineering team through this online form: https://aka.ms/mipg-chimera-survey

Hi all and thank you for your feedback. While this will not directly address backup and restore from MI to back on-premises SQL (this is also being considered and some updates might follow), we are considering a replication technology which might help support this scenario. We are exploring product improvement opportunities in the area of hybrid link using distributed availability groups (AG) replication technology between SQL Server and MI. This will enable near real time data replication between SQL Server and MI. We are also considering failover scenarios both ways. If this might interest you, we invite you to provide your feedback to the engineering team through this online survey: https://aka.ms/mipg-chimera-survey. Thank you.
