DevTest Labs now supports integration with Azure Shared Image Gallery (SIG).
For the scenario you outlined above,
You can extract the images for the VMs you would like to move to a lab
Upload these images to the shared image gallery
Attach the shared image gallery to your lab
Create lab VMs from these imagesSome docs:

Thanks for submitting the idea. In order to help us better address this problem, could you please share with us more context? Which type of existing disk resources would you like to rename (data disk or something else) and why?

Is there anywhere we can keep track of the progress on this? I need to know whether to wait or to go ahead and recreate my VMs. I'm in the same position as Darrell.
