Azure Stack HCI

Azure Stack HCI is a hyperconverged infrastructure solution to consolidate virtualized workloads on-premises, with the highest levels of performance, scale and reliability. You can also optionally connect to Azure services for cloud-based backup, Site Recovery, and more. Azure Stack HCI solutions use Microsoft-validated hardware, from a wide-range of partners, to ensure optimal performance and reliability. The solutions include support for new and emerging technologies such as NVMe drives, persistent memory, and remote-direct memory access (RDMA) networking.  The Azure Stack HCI solution can be managed using the Windows Admin Center; a modern, streamlined server management solution that integrates seamlessly with Azure.

You can find more information about these solutions, including how to get started, in the Azure Stack HCI documentation, and Windows Admin Center documentation.  If you have a technical issue, please raise a question through the Microsoft Q&A portal within the Docs site, or alternatively, engage with the active, MVP-led Azure Stack HCI community.

Do you have any ideas or feature requests? We would love to hear your feedback!

  1. On premise only version with normal datacenter license

It would be great if there were a on-premise only version, with normal datacenter licensing for organizations that want the more frequent release frequency for their cluster infrastructure, but have no need or interest in the Azure Cloud portion (and the associated monthly licensing fees)

I can't justify the licensing cost increase for the azure portion of the functionality, that our company has no interest in, just to have a faster release/patch cycle.

If nothing else, please, please, please backport the S2D fixes to LTSC channel so on-premise only organizations can be patched properly.

  2. Transfer billing info offline between an "air-gapped" Azure Stack HCI and Azure

The FSI customers have strict industry compliance requirement , and they could not connect internet for their production environment. Need transport billing data using removable storage to another laptop , then transfer to Azure to get the renewed cluster’s cloud-generated license to finish the billing process every month.

  3. Implement Storage Snapshots

Many HCI solutions use Storage Snapshots to protect and recover a whole Volume. Perhaps you can use Storage replica to protect the Snapshot on a 2nd Datacenter or upload directly in Azure.

  5. Tags should be name value

In Azure Tags are name-value pairs but in Azure Stack in Admin Center the tags are only a single value, which is inconsistent and reduces the context of the tag

  6. Azure Stack Hub over Azure Stack HCI

A future version of Azure Stack Hub to run on top of Azure Stack HCI will provide a great solution. Isn't ?

  7. StorageMaintenanceMode should have optional flags for suspending jobs

Enable-StorageMaintenanceMode should have optional features to fully suspend the rebuild, repair and rebalance for the time of the maintenance.
I have noticed that after rebooting a server that should be in StorageMaintenanceMode, the S2D will start automatically rebuilding and rebalancing the storage even when the node is still in StorageMaintenanceMode. The rebuild and rebalance jobs also do NOT start in IsBackgroundTask=True mode having very bad performance hit to the environment. Since the maintenance is usually needed on all nodes and often require more than one reboot per node, this causes a huge impact on the system for every reboot.
    I…

  8. Per VM Windows Server License

With Azure Stack HCI now a subscription for the underlying platform. (Windows DC no longer required) Why not provide an option to license Windows OS for the VMs on a per VM basis? And perhaps a subscription model for this as well. This would align better with the cloud opex model. Where it makes sense, Windows DC licenses can be assigned to nodes for unlimited Windows VM entitlement, but the smaller ROBO environments are not good value with that model. Windows Standard could be leveraged but you must license all nodes in cluster for the total of the VMs -…

  9. Enable Live Migration Support from Windows Server

How are existing Hyper-V customers supposed to get excited to move to this platform when it forces a direct copy of VMs and really no true functionality between what must be the Hyper-V configurations that are the barrier to this? I could see less adoption of this product due to having to copy virtual machines cold/offline and having to take downtime to do so.
