Azure App Configuration

Azure App Configuration provides a service to centrally manage application settings. Store all your application configurations and secure their accesses in one place. Consume configuration data easily in multiple application run-time environments or a CI/CD pipeline. Use the service from any programming language.

More details about this service are available in the Azure App Configuration documentation.

  1. app config reference

azure key vault supports something called azure key vault references, where you can simply use the app settings for a function app or app service to point to a secret in key vault without having to change anything about your app. You just replace the previous value in app settings with the key vault reference. It would be nice if app configuration had something similar, to replace existing values in app settings with a reference to an app configuration value.

  2. Ability to edit/update multiple key-values and save them as a group

Currently to edit a key-value you need to click the 'Edit' menu option and save the changes. It isn't possible to edit multiple key-values together. It would be nice if it were possible to edit multiple key-values and save them as a group.

  3. Integration with Azure Api Management

Please integrate the Azure App Configuration with Azure Api Management. It would be so nice to be able to manage all of those named values and secrets in app configuration instead of the api management.

  4. segregate admin consents for internal vs external connected apps (Registered and Enterprise).

Segregate admin consents for internal vs external connected apps (Registered and Enterprise). e.g. if Registered app connects to an API inside our tenant you dont need to grant admin consent and if it connects outside of your tenant you do.

  6. RBAC for the APP configuration

I am looking for the way to provide read-only access for a user where a user can only see the key-value pair in configuration explorer.

I tried providing App configuration data reader role to the user but it is not working.

I logged Microsoft ticket and the following reply came

"azure app configuration does not support AAD authentication for App Configuration data access"
please suggest what we can do about it.

this feature improve the security and rivalidation of AppRegistration.
Very usefull Feature to improve in Azure Alert or Azure Monitor.
    Thank you

  9. Increase resources for free tier

Currently, there's only 1 free resource per subscription. This is far from ideal since if we want to share this within a single system that uses a WebApp, Azure Functions, and other services for at least 3 different environments then we have to pay for 2 standard plans.
We host under 1 subscription several different systems therefore paying approximately 100$/month per system (~35$ per environment) is just too much for most cases. Specially if development and qa environments are barely used.
If this is not possible, at least we should have a pay-per-use tier for low traffic systems.

  10. Link configuration with KeyVault secret item

Currently connection string or access credential are managed by KeyVault, while most of them are consumed by application as configuration. It will be great to link configuration with KeyVault secret. For instance, one configuration item can link to a KeyVault secret item which is actually a SQL connection string.

  12. Integrate Azure App Service with Azure App Configuration

Please integrate in portal.azure.com management of, which Azure App Service (Web Site) and it's deployment slot, is connected directly to Azure App Configuration profile.
So admins, can easily, see, connect, and disconnect - Azure App Configuration settings :)

  14. Improve load balancer AppService Plan

Azure should be balance request better in App Service Plan. We have a App Service with 10 instances. Sometimes, one of them failed or consume high CPU, but this instance continue getting requests.

Should be any configuration to stop sending request to an instance base on request duration, cpu or something else.

Even if we use a load balancer in top of a service plan with 10 instances, this instance will continue getting requests since the others instances are healthy.

  15. Allow Multiple Labels

Currently you can only differentiate values for a key on a single Label. It would be great if you could use more than one Label. For example, be able to setup different values for a key based on both application name and tenant. A consuming application could then provide multiple scopes to build up appropriate configuration.

  16. Allow Environment or Label specific permission options

I am planning to store Development, Test, and Production configuration in a single App Configuration instance using Labels. Clients will access the configuration using Managed Identity and I want to restrict access to "Production" Label.

  17. discontinue using App Settings for back-end changes or adhere to the slot specific toggle.

Azure uses app settings to log things like WEBSITEHTTPLOGGINGRETENTION_DAYS which is part of App Service Logs. While these settings are slot specific, they do not appear that way in portal. Instead they look like they should be swapped with the slot.

Documentation was updated via https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs/issues/38996 but this could be improved further by adding that toggle instead of using back-end magic to make these slot specific.

  18. App Configuration support for idiomatic Service Fabric / Managed Identity integration

Currently there is no idiomatic support for using Azure App Configuration with .Net Core micro-services running in Azure Service Fabric and Managed Identity.

Service Fabric guidance on working with Managed Identity follows however it's not clear how this should be used with App Configuration: https://docs.microsoft.com/bs-latn-ba/azure/service-fabric/how-to-managed-identity-service-fabric-app-code

  20. Allow push-based configuration changed notification

It would be great if Azure App Configuration allows push-based configuration changed notification using Event Grid or simply via a webhook. Services hosted outside Azure can take great advantage from this feature.
