SQL Managed Instance

  1. Provide Managed Instance reports on PITR usage and Managed Instance Set Retention

    @Jamal Blackwell

    We are charged for PITR that exceeds the allowable provided limit but do not know what databases are consuming excessive space. We have the ability to update the retention of each database to manage the PITR consumption, but are unaware of which databases are major contributors of consumption. It is essentially getting an invoice without billed item and just seeing a TOTAL DUE. I am suggesting the two following ideas that will assist in cost management of PITR:

    1. Total storage used for Azure automated backups per Managed Instance compared to non-charged allowable amount. It would be even better…

  2. Add connection to CosmosDbB

    SQL Managed Instance needs a connection to Azure Cosmos DB so we can access data stored in the db with procedures. This will allow us to join data between the two technologies. I know stand alone SQL server can do this the ODBC, but this is not an option on MI.

  3. Allow renaming of logical file names for Managed Databases

    When creating a Managed Database on a Managed Instance. I would like the ability to define the logical name of the database files. We are monitoring some aspects of performance. Some of which down to the particular files. Its is not clear which database data file is under load without joining to other DMVs to get this. Especially where 3rd party monitoring software is being used. Its not quite straightforward to take information from a dedicated tool and working out which database it belongs to when they mostly have the same name.

    Even if it was just a case of…

  4. Share the List of Patches applied on the SQL MI

    It would be great if we have the list of patches applied on the OS level and SQL Level. It's more of informational message.

  5. Allow moving of Managed Instances to different subnet.

    If networking changes are requred the only option to get an MI under a new private address space is to delete and re-create the Managed Instance which takes a long time to deploy.

  7. Script Task DLLs on SQL Server PaaS

    We have observed that default .Net DLLs are available in Managed instance however if we can make available all .Net reference / DLL like Azure functions . Specially for those tenant who are using SQL Managed instance for ADF V2 / SSIS as a services.

    As per my experience, many people are using .Net script task in SSIS to achieve complex logic which we can not achieve through SSIS adapter and in this case we need additional DLLs. We can still install DDLs if we are using AZURE servers but if we are following as services approach (which we are…

  8. Improve publicly available information on SQL Managed Instance Backup for intra and inter-region datacenter failures

    Could more SQL Managed Instance backup information be provided for the following scenarios:
    (a) are SQL MI backups in storage that will survive an availability zone level failure (ie. whole Data Centre goes down)
    (b) can a customer access those backups in order to restore the DB to a new MI created in a different AZ after disaster
    (c) Same points (a) and (b) but for an entire region failure

  9. Make it easier to find information on SQL Managed Instances

    There is no single place within the Microsoft Azure documentation or announcements that appears to cater to the SQL Managed Instance. Neither an Azure SQL DB, nor an IaaS environment with SQL Server installed, it is a unique technology - which is not yet well served in the myriad of information currently published regarding Azure options. There is no [Microsoft Learn] offering for SQL Managed Instances. The [Microsoft Build] site does not even define it as a searchable product, to look for updates to the technology offering.

    It seems like information regarding SMI is always attached to some other technology…

  10. Alter a database to be READ_ONLY

    Provide the ability to alter a database and set the dbupdateoption READONLY or READWRITE.

    The column ("isreadonly") exists in the sys.databases view but the statement ("ALTER DATABASE [database] SET READ_ONLY") returns an error that the statement is not supported.

  12. Restoring a database into Managed Instances adds an In-Memory OLTP filegroup

    Create a new database using simple syntax:

    CREATE DATABASE DBAtools;

    And no memory optimized data filegroup is created. However, if you restore a database from an on-premises backup (via blob storage), Managed Instances automatically create a memory optimized data filegroup. This will be problematic since we can never remove that filegroup, and we may not want to use this feature.

    To reproduce, I restored several databases like this:

    RESTORE DATABASE StackOverflow2010
    FROM URL = 'https://stackoverflowbackups.blob.core.windows.net/backups/StackOverflow2010.bak';
    GO

  13. Incorrect message about valid values for compatibility level

    On a Managed Instance v12.0.2000.8, run an ALTER DATABASE for an invalid compatibility_level, like this:

    ALTER DATABASE [StackOverflow2010] SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 150

    And the message comes back saying:

    Msg 33528, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
    Valid values of the database compatibility level are 100, 110, 120, or 130.

    That's not true - 140 is also a valid value for the compatibility level.

  14. sp_OACreate support for SQL MI

    It would be great to have the support for sp_OACreate in SQL MI as well. This is a blocker for customer who want to migrate to SQL MI from SQL Server in certain cases.

  15. More granular vCore count i.e. 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16. 2 for DEV/TEST

    More granular vCore count i.e. 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16. 2 for DEV/TEST. The jump between 8 and 16 is too great. Need options in-between.

  16. Add SQL Managed Instance quota to the subscription quota page

    Currently I can't see SQL Managed Instance quota usage and limit in the subscription quota page, which makes it difficult to manage.

    I've been told by support this functionality doesn't currently exist and can't be queried via PowerShell either.

    *Currently the only way to see the current limit is via logging a quota increase support ticket. But this doesn't show current usage of the quota, and is a pain to go check in each subscription.

  17. Time of day control of Full Backups by Database

    Some large databases can take hours to do a full backup and we find this happens at the worst possible time of the day! We'd like to specify an ideal time window for when a full backup should to begin.

  18. Backup history isn't visible within managed instance MSDB

    I'd like to be able to have visibility of the backup history within SQL for managing when database backup sizes get out of expected range, when and why.

  19. Enabling QDS for Read-only Replica provided with BC critical MI

    As we get a RO replica with a business-critical MI and if we are using it support our production load Its better to have it equipped that way as well for troubleshooting issues.

    Currently, we do face performance issues and we really can not do anything about it as with the Replica neither we are not able to use profiler or QDS nor we can see its utilization on resources
