SQL Managed Instance

  1. Make it easier to find information on SQL Managed Instances

There is no single place within the Microsoft Azure documentation or announcements that appears to cater to the SQL Managed Instance. Neither an Azure SQL DB, nor an IaaS environment with SQL Server installed, it is a unique technology - which is not yet well served in the myriad of information currently published regarding Azure options. There is no [Microsoft Learn] offering for SQL Managed Instances. The [Microsoft Build] site does not even define it as a searchable product, to look for updates to the technology offering.

It seems like information regarding SMI is always attached to some other technology…

  2. Connecting to Network share drive from SQL Managed Instance

We have jobs to read data/file ,process it and again send the data/file to to a Share location. Presently we can't connect to any share path(drive) from SQL Managed Instance. This will help migrating the existing job to Managed instance with ease. Please look into this scenario..Thanks in Advance.

  3. SQL Managed Instance Contributor does not meet Segregation of Duty requirements

The newly SQL Managed Instance Contributor has ability to create and change Network Resources as Network Security Groups or Route Tables. Due to the fact that these Resources are of high importance regarding Network Security Segregation of Duties must be in place to segregate Database Operations from Network Operations.
The current SQL Managed Instance Contributor role breaches this wall and Database Operations would be able to change Network Security related resources.

Please amend the role so that Network Resources are handled either transparent or via a different role.

  4. Alter a database to be READ_ONLY

Provide the ability to alter a database and set the dbupdateoption READONLY or READWRITE.

The column ("isreadonly") exists in the sys.databases view but the statement ("ALTER DATABASE [database] SET READ_ONLY") returns an error that the statement is not supported.

  5. Managed instance of SSAS

SQL Analysis Services Multi-dimensional is not available as PaaS, it would be great if there was a MI alternative for us to use instead of running on IaaS.
    Thank you.

  6. Can we get support for XA Transactions added to SQL Managed Instances?

I'm looking at porting over my accounting and timesheet system to a Managed Instance backend (Deltek). But it requires XA Transactions to be enabled on the SQL server. From what I am able to tell, this is not enabled on managed instances at this time.

  7. WSUS support for Azure SQL

I would like to to be able to use Azure SQL so I don't run my own instance of SQL Server in a VM just for WSUS.

  9. Restoring a database into Managed Instances adds an In-Memory OLTP filegroup

Create a new database using simple syntax:

    CREATE DATABASE DBAtools;

And no memory optimized data filegroup is created. However, if you restore a database from an on-premises backup (via blob storage), Managed Instances automatically create a memory optimized data filegroup. This will be problematic since we can never remove that filegroup, and we may not want to use this feature.

To reproduce, I restored several databases like this:

    RESTORE DATABASE StackOverflow2010
    FROM URL = 'https://stackoverflowbackups.blob.core.windows.net/backups/StackOverflow2010.bak';
    GO

  10. Incorrect message about valid values for compatibility level

On a Managed Instance v12.0.2000.8, run an ALTER DATABASE for an invalid compatibility_level, like this:

    ALTER DATABASE [StackOverflow2010] SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 150

And the message comes back saying:

    Msg 33528, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Valid values of the database compatibility level are 100, 110, 120, or 130.

That's not true - 140 is also a valid value for the compatibility level.

  15. windows authentication in azure sql db managed instance

I have read in many forums that currently Azure SQL Database managed instance doesn't support "Windows Authentication". Is there any workaround for this? or ETA for MI to support Windows auth

  16. Storage Auto Scaling on SQL Managed Instance

Scaling a managed instance is a manual activity. We manually provision storage capacity based on anticipated application demands.

Can we have a option scaling automatically scales storage capacity in response to growing database workloads, with zero downtime.

  17. support for in-memory in Managed instance(BC Tier) during bacpac import

While importing a bacpac from on-prem database with in-memory tables through SSMS v 18.1 on Managed instance (Business critical Tier), we get an error message related to filegroup. The MSDN doc suggests that in-memory objects are supported on BC tier and not in GP tier, but we are getting error messages in BC tier (attached file). Could you please let me know if it is a bug? and how to resolve this issue. The following is the create database script

    Error :

Error SQL72014: .Net SqlClient Data Provider: Msg 10797, Level 15, State 2, Line 1 Only one MEMORYOPTIMIZED
