SQL Managed Instance

  1. Metric Alerts

SQL Manged Instance needs to support the same Metric Alerts that SQL Database has.
This is essential to being able to monitor SQL Managed Instance as part of the cohesive alerting setup as our other Azure resources.

  2. Threat Detection Service blocking alter database ... modify filegroup ... command

While creating a new database on SQLMI using a SQL script generated from SSDT, this command failed:

    ALTER DATABASE [$(DatabaseName)] MODIFY FILEGROUP [BIEN2013] READ_ONLY;

    with this error message:

    Msg 5070, Level 16, State 2, Line 29
Database state cannot be changed while other users are using the database 'd3b218ed-c416-49c2-bc26-02e915c7e3b6'

when I looked at the sp_who2 output, I saw that there was a spid from the "TdService" in that DB. Looking this up shows that this is the "Threat Detection Service".

The spid eventually went away, but this blocked my SSDT deploy.

  3. Restore a bacpac to Managed instance

    Hi,

We are currently trying to restore a bacpac from a database on Azure SQL Server (within an elastic pool) to a SQK Managed Instance. It would be great to do so.

  4. Additional server level permissions to security logins.

It would be great is we could grant some of the server level permissions to the constrained database users e.g. View Server State and View All Definitions.

  5. Desired State Configuration / Policy Based Management

We need to do more to enable very large enterprises to establish, govern and validate the compliance of their PaaS database instances. Enabling a DSC or Group Policy type feature for MI/PaaS that is fully integrated with Azure Monitoring (Service Now) would be a huge win!

  6. xp_logininfo alternative for Azure SQLDBMI with AzureAD

How can I request login info about Azure AD ( synced) authorities on my Azure SQLDB Managed Instance ?

    EXEC master..xp_logininfo @acctname = 'mydomain\theAccount', @option = 'all'

We need to figure this out from within the SQLInstance and not as a reaction on the Azure Portal or Powershell AD info.

  7. Upload custom certificat

Native DNS name for smi is not user friendly.
We could define a custom DNS but then we get trouble with encryption.
There is option to "trustServerCertificate" but this option is not available for all client (ie Power BI desktop)

It's should be great if we get ability to upload custom certificate (with alternate subject Name) to SMI.

  8. Enable timezone change for production instances

The time zone of an existing managed instance can't be changed.
I know we can provision a new instance and migrate the data but the downtime is a major blocker for my 24/7 application.

  9. Disable database backups for a time window to increase I/O for batch processes

We are using SQL Server for an informational database (no online transactions) and are getting performance issues since database backups start at the time we are still processing ETL workloads (SSIS reading) this causes significant performance issues.

It should be nice for us to set an exclusion window or set an start/end signal so no backup is needed for this period (our processes are on the fly and there's no point in restoring to any time point between the beginning and the end of the proccess).

Other option is that this can be set by forcing database backups before our…

  10. Prevent database renaming in Managed Instance when there are connections to the DB

For on-prem SQL Server, DB renaming fails when there are connections to the DB (because it can't get an exclusive connection). For Managed Instance, DB renaming completes despite there being connections. Aligning Managed Instance to the on-prem behaviour would be a valuable safeguard against accidental renaming via SSMS.

  11. Creation time for Azure SQL Managed Instances

The first deployment in a resource group takes between 6-12 hours. (This raises concerns around disaster recovery plans in regards to any scenario that we need to restore a backup in a new resource group. 12 hours + Restore time is not feasible).

Is the creation time going to be improved in the near future? This is causing is great concern for moving to MI.

  13. Support AD-based authentications using the Microsoft Authentication Library.

The Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL) supports AAD v2.0 tokens. It would be great if SQL Database Managed Instance could be made to support this. That way, applications written to leverage AAD v2.0 tokens can authenticate with SQL Database Managed Instance more easily.

  14. Increase file disk size without having to grow the file

Since the IOPS and MB/s performance is tied to the size of the disk (P10 128gb, 500 IOPS, 100 MB/s etc.), we should be allowed to assign larger disks to a file without having to grow the file first (as this activity evidently costs more money, but more importantly consumes unnecessary instance space). As a P10 disk would natively be assigned to host an application Db of 100gb, if this DB had a decent read write load from both the application and downstream reporting activities batching data into a DW etc., is not sufficient (not even close..). Therefore you are…

  15. Allow multiple secondary replicas for SQL Managed Instance

Would help to allow multiple secondary replicas for SQL Managed Instance. This would help to off load read access of different client data to be loaded to different replicas, Multiple reporting users and ad-hoc query users on a single secondary replica can slow down the overall performance.

  17. Higher performance using newer amd epyc rome 7742 cpus instead of older intel models

The vCPUs and memory in Gen4/5 VMs isn't great. Our 5 year old servers we moved from have a higher per vCPU performance compared with whats available in azure. The newer epyc rome 7742 should enable enhanced performance for a managed instance for CPU, IO and memory bandwitdh and higher memory to core ratios.

  19. Allow Azure Active Directory accounts to be mapped in linked servers

On prem workload being moved to MI. On prem domain accounts are used in linked server mappings. Those domain accounts have been moved to AAD and now we can't map them

  20. Script Task DLLs on SQL Server PaaS

We have observed that default .Net DLLs are available in Managed instance however if we can make available all .Net reference / DLL like Azure functions . Specially for those tenant who are using SQL Managed instance for ADF V2 / SSIS as a services.

As per my experience, many people are using .Net script task in SSIS to achieve complex logic which we can not achieve through SSIS adapter and in this case we need additional DLLs. We can still install DDLs if we are using AZURE servers but if we are following as services approach (which we are…
