SQL Managed Instance

  1. Implement Long term backup

PITR of 35 days is not enough for our production databases.

We need long-term backup as it's done on Azure SQL Database.

  3. Azure SQL PITR - Option to disable or set to 1 day retention

We currently have an SQL managed database, which we use for development purposes.

We are developing how our data ingest will work, currently we drop the tables every day, and re-load all the data. As of the 31-AUG we started getting charged for PiTR which we didn't know about, until PiTR started costing us upwards of $120 per day.

What I found out is after the initial backup (free) any changes were replicated to 6 regions (GRS storage) and set to 35 days retention period. These are backups we don't want or need, as data is ingested from the Datalake.…

We are pleased to announce that 1 day backup retention is now available for active databases on Managed Instance, and 0 days (no backup) for deleted databases. Functionality is available using PowerShell only at this time. Minimum required version of Az.SQL module is v2.6.0, or it can be executed through CloudShell which always has the latest Az.SQL version.

The portal piece is not available at this time. It is expected to land in a few weeks.

To update Az.SQL PowerShell module, see:
    https://www.powershellgallery.com/packages/Az.Sql/

To configure PITR backup retention to 1 day for active databases, or 0 days for delete databases, see this blogpost: https://aka.ms/mi-backup-tuning

  4. Add support for SQL Machine Learning Services (R Services)

The ability to work with Machine Learning (R Services in particular) is one that is a business driver. Having the Machine learning queries next to the data is something that's required. It was mentioned as being developed in the forums when MI first hit preview. What's the current status?

  5. Enable cross subscription point-in-time restores

Enabling cross subscription point-in-time restores would make refreshing other environments much easier especially when databases are TDE encrypted with Azure managed keys. The current manual workaround is more complex.(https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Azure-SQL-Database/Take-a-COPY-ONLY-backup-of-TDE-protected-database-on-Azure-SQL/ba-p/643407)

Cross-subscription PITR will be supported for subscriptions in the same region, and under the same tenant ID (different regions and different tenant IDs will not be supported due to technical and security concerns). TDE encrypted databases will also be supported, only for Microsoft managed keys. BYOK (bring your own keys) will not be supported as due to security concerns Microsoft cannot manage your private encryption keys.

This feature is now available in a limited private preview and is approved for testing on case by case basis. To request enrollment, create an Azure support ticket online, and choose the support topic Point in time restore, requesting consideration for enrollment into the private preview.

  6. Fix public endpoint database rename issue

It is known that the public endpoint currently has issue when you rename a database through it. Will there be a fix for this soon?
