  1. Allow specifying file size when creating database on managed instance

Since performance (IOps) is determined by disk size the database file is on, we should be able to specify the file size so it will be on a disk which provides the performance required.

  2. Metric Alerts

SQL Manged Instance needs to support the same Metric Alerts that SQL Database has.
This is essential to being able to monitor SQL Managed Instance as part of the cohesive alerting setup as our other Azure resources.

  3. Move to Standard LoadBalancer Internally

I would like to suggest that you move the platform off of Basic Azure Load-Balancer and instead use the newer Standard ALB. This will open up additional options to us such as use of Availability Zones, Geo-Replication over Peers (vs having to setup more expensive and complicated vNet to vNet VPNs). I'm not sure why you opted for the older Basic ALB over Standard (what I got back was due to cost) - but that doesn't make sense to me as Azure SQL MI isn't exactly a cheap solution anyway and most large customers who would consume it, would prefer…

  4. Allow Azure Active Directory accounts to be mapped in linked servers

On prem workload being moved to MI. On prem domain accounts are used in linked server mappings. Those domain accounts have been moved to AAD and now we can't map them

  5. SQL Managed Instance and Azure Files storage

Please make it possible for SQL Managed Instance to access files stored in Azure Files storage. This should apply to BACKUP, RESTORE and OPENROWSET. This would make it easier to port databases from on-premises as you would not be limited to using Azure blob storage.

  7. Use Managed Identity (MSI) for backup/restore to storage account from Managed instance

Backup / restore from storage to SMI require SAS token stored as credential. should be great to be able to use System Assign identity in order to control access to storage account without need of storing SAS token.

  8. Support DNS aliasing of an Azure SQL Managed Instance (at least for public endpoint)

As it is already supported for Azure single SQL Database, it would be nice to be able to create an alias for the Managed Instance, especially for the public endpoint address. All clients connecting directly to the public endpoint would be able to use an alias instead of the real name of the instance. Switching instances, disaster recovery, migration scenarios would be a lot easier to handle.
FYI, creating a public CNAME record redirecting to the public endpoint address of an MI (like instancename.public.***.database.windows.net) does NOT work : IP resolution is good, but no way to login to the instance…

  10. Threat Detection Service blocking alter database ... modify filegroup ... command

While creating a new database on SQLMI using a SQL script generated from SSDT, this command failed:

    ALTER DATABASE [$(DatabaseName)] MODIFY FILEGROUP [BIEN2013] READ_ONLY;

    with this error message:

    Msg 5070, Level 16, State 2, Line 29
Database state cannot be changed while other users are using the database 'd3b218ed-c416-49c2-bc26-02e915c7e3b6'

when I looked at the sp_who2 output, I saw that there was a spid from the "TdService" in that DB. Looking this up shows that this is the "Threat Detection Service".

The spid eventually went away, but this blocked my SSDT deploy.

  11. Enable Managed Identity (MSI) Authentication with Managed Instance

User Assigned Managed Identity and System MSI is supported with SQL DB but not SQL MI.

    See: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs/issues/23965

Need to write code "the hard way" to support AAD token auth from code: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/securing-azure-sql-databases-with-managed-identities-just-got-easier/

  12. Provide Option to "Restore a Deleted Database" - the same functionality which is avaialbe in Azure SQL Databases

Like Azure SQL Databases, provide the option to restore a deleted database in Azure SQL Managed Instance using the portal.

THe present work-around https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlserverstorageengine/2019/01/21/recreate-dropped-database-on-azure-sql-managed-instance/ isn't exactly easy, particularly as SQL DBAs in the organisation I work for , do not have the permissions to do this in the Azure Portal. Furthermore, in the event of an accidental drop; which is quite easy to do in SSMS, including V18.0, the drop confirmation box is not always displayed.

  14. Need to change being Capable to Resize the job history

SQL agent in SQL MI can keep 10 job history records per each job step and 1000 rows in total.

If MI can capable to resize job history Log like on-prem SQL, It must be good for CX who has a bunch of scheduled job.
We can easily imagine If we had 20 jobs which execute every hour, I would be impossible to check the log about the last executed log.

Also, I think the below link needs to be corrected.
MI was marked in "APPLIES TO" box.

So It seems like to capable to resize the job history log.

  15. Script Task DLLs on SQL Server PaaS

We have observed that default .Net DLLs are available in Managed instance however if we can make available all .Net reference / DLL like Azure functions . Specially for those tenant who are using SQL Managed instance for ADF V2 / SSIS as a services.

As per my experience, many people are using .Net script task in SSIS to achieve complex logic which we can not achieve through SSIS adapter and in this case we need additional DLLs. We can still install DDLs if we are using AZURE servers but if we are following as services approach (which we are…

  16. Prevent database renaming in Managed Instance when there are connections to the DB

For on-prem SQL Server, DB renaming fails when there are connections to the DB (because it can't get an exclusive connection). For Managed Instance, DB renaming completes despite there being connections. Aligning Managed Instance to the on-prem behaviour would be a valuable safeguard against accidental renaming via SSMS.

  17. Fix public endpoint database rename issue

It is known that the public endpoint currently has issue when you rename a database through it. Will there be a fix for this soon?

  18. Make managed SQL instance able to access Azure file shares.

It would be really great if managed SQL instance can access Azure file shares. Many of our Company’s On-Prem SQL applications were using Windows file shares. We had already moved them to IaaS SQL instances. We are not able to migrate all these SQL applications to managed SQL instances from IaaS, due to inaccessibility of Azure file share from managed SQL instance.

  19. Improve publicly available information on SQL Managed Instance Backup for intra and inter-region datacenter failures

Could more SQL Managed Instance backup information be provided for the following scenarios:
    (a) are SQL MI backups in storage that will survive an availability zone level failure (ie. whole Data Centre goes down)
    (b) can a customer access those backups in order to restore the DB to a new MI created in a different AZ after disaster
    (c) Same points (a) and (b) but for an entire region failure

  20. Link to create a rule from the "create a listener dialog"

I was wondering if you would consider adding a link to create a rule from the "create a listener dialog", if a rule is indeed required to make a listener useful.
