  1. Support pagefile and file exclusions with hyper-v backup in SCDPM

current Set-DPMGlobalProperty -HyperVPagefileExclusions is not up to par when compared to other backup solutions. It is very labor intensive and very inconvenient to deploy and manage.

  3. SCDPM support for 3rd party applications VSS writers

Enable support for 3rd party applications VSS writers, like Oracle.

  4. multi restore

    Restore multiple Sql Server Databases
SQL Multi-restore – DPM only allows single SQL restores so if you lose an entire SQL instance with 100 DBs, this results in 100 separate restores to be configured.

  5. Rename SQL files during restore

DPM already allows you to restore a DB to the same SQL instance as the original DB, except using a new DB name. However, it doesn’t let you specify new file names for the DB files. So we want to restore “DB1” to the same SQL instance while using the name “DB1_Test”. However, we are blocked due to the underlying files already existing for “DB1”. To work around, we would need to 1) restore to a different directory, 2) detach the DB, 3) rename the files, 4) copy them to the original \MSSQL\Data directory, and 5) attach the new “DB1_Test”.…

  6. Option to remove missing tape media and libraries that are de-funct in SC DPM

Expose a command let or an option to let users remove tape library and tapes in SC DPM

  7. SCDPM: Express full backup schedule in HH:MM and not only in 30 min steps

In a high dense hosting environments a lot of happens in hour or even half an hour intervals. So starting at a different time would be helpful.

  8. Enable Auditing Feature in DPM

Every application trying to scale towards Enterprise Level should have Auditing enabled to capture smallest of changes. Role based is an option but cannot replace auditing which can help in multiple ways for eg: find repeated human errors, process errors etc which are backborn when it come to Operations. today i can't even find out who did what as no one's ready to agree they did a mistake which makes it impossible to correct things. this will also help bringing the potential defects if any in DPM workflow

  9. Database of LTO contents.

If you use more LTO tapes than space in LTO library you have to notify what is on each tape.

    It should be more userfriendly:
    - if you need to restore some data - DPM should ask for Tape with correct ID
    - if you have an expired tapes - DPM schould inform which tapes (which are offsite) you can use.

  11. SCDPM - Evacuate Disks (Backup-to-disk)

At the moment there are several scripts based on MigrateDatasourceDataFromDPM.ps1 to make it easier to move data from disk to disk.

I think it would be really helpful to implement this functionality directly in the DPM GUI. At least some kind of maintenance mode for disks to clean them up before removing them.

  12. Allow to change the free tape threshold limit

Make the free tape threshold user configurable. The default value of 20% is in the most cases to much reserve and therefore the alert comes to early. Make a option in the GUI or via PowerShell to set the threshold to a desired value.

  13. Configurable scratch size

With large file volumes with over 1 million files, the scratch space for DPM to Azure backup is up to 20%. That's an extra 408GB for every 2 TB protected file data that needs to be attached to the DPM server. In a hosted environment where the disk allocated to DPM costs per GB it would be great if I could reduce the space used for the scratch volume even if it meant my dedupe in Azure was less - I.e. rather than allocating 400GB on premise I would happily add 50 GB on DPM if I could limit scratch…

  15. SCDPM Failed job report

A report of failed jobs like the Failed jobs for yesterday and today, preferable configurable for time frame e.g. last day, last week, last month

  16. Add ability to make choice reg. SQL log truncation when doing host level backups

Add the ability to choose wether transaction logs are truncated (backed up) when doing host level backups of VMs where SQL Server is running. In former DPM version this choice was possible as documented in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/975354
According to DPM specialist DPM 2012R2 (and newer) is currently not implementing the IVssBackupComponents::SetBackupOptions API which would allow to control the log truncation behavior.
Business scenario is to be able to back up a VM, while still leveraging SQL backups via maintenance plans and not let the DPM backup interfer with SQL backups.

In earlier Windows OS Version (pre 2012) it was possible to…

  18. tape

If a tape drive (such as LTO4 and newer drives) natively supports hardware encryption make use of that instead of relying on encryption from within in DPM. Same with Compression, make use of hardware capabilities. That way both encryption and compression can be used together.

  19. Allow DPM to backup VMWare guests with Independent disks

Currently, VMDKs in "Independent" mode cause DPM protection jobs to fail when using VMWare protection. The fix (I assume) would be to allow DPM to support non-memory consistent snapshots.

    https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1007532
    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/dpm/2017/01/16/support-tip-dpm-recovery-point-or-consistency-check-for-a-protected-vmware-vm-fails-with-filefaultfault-error/

This currently prevents us from efficiently protecting Exchange and SQL workloads in VMWare.

  20. Enabling Online Backup on a Secondary DPM Server

We would like to enable Online Backup on a secondary DPM Server.
    The Scenario is the following:
We have several small branches connected to a Datacenter using MPLS connection, the branch offices do not have direct Internet access, the Internet access is shared through the Datacenter.
We have one DPM server in each site and a secondary DPM server in the Datacenter, therefore we would like to enable Online Backup to Azure on the secondary DPM server and not on the primary.
This is very important scenario that is holding back the customer to use Azure as Offsite/secure location.
    Thank…
