  1. Allow bakcup of on-premise Hyper-v VM to Azure storage account as disk

Currently DPM and MABS allow you to protect on-premise Hyper-V VMs and retain in recovery services vault. The restore is allowed only on the on-premise Hyper-V server. In the scenario of completely lost on-premise infrastructure you can restore to on-premise even and even though the backups are stored on cloud you cannot restore to cloud.

In case of large VMs backup with limited network the restore might take days.

Would having option to restore the VM as disk to storage account help you in this scenario?
You can simply attach that disk to any existing VMs to get the required…

  2. Support deduplication of the MBS ReFS volume directly

Currently the documents for DPM 2019 state:

    > DPM does not support deduplication on ReFS disk used for MBS backups.

It would be preferable that this is supported as it will provide better performance (not needing to create artificial fragmentation due to 1TB disks, wasted deduplication time due to empty space in a vhdx, no additional abstraction layer or multiple OSes running). Further, ReFS supports 4TB files for deduplication and would allow the deduplication of datasources larger than 1TB.

Currently I've been running this on a few servers and as far as I can tell there aren't any incompatibilities as…

  4. Exclude disks for VM-level backups - VMWare

Request the ability to exclude entire disks from a VM level backup. An example would be a VM level backup of a SQL server but we want to exclude the database dump volume since that contains redundant data.

Another example is a file server that has multiple large historical drives (static data) and one active drive receiving new data. The fileserver could be protected at the VM level to target the active data but ignore the drives with static data.

This entry is specific to VMWare VM protection.

  6. Better QA for DPM

There are so many bugs with this product it is unbelievable. The product team also doesn't really care unless it has something to do with Azure backups. I definitely would recommend a different backup product given the current state of affairs with DPM.

  7. Service Security Identifiers (SID’s) to grant access for the service running SQL server,

SQL already uses Service Security Identifiers (SID’s) to grant access for the service running SQL server, to the SQL instance. Like setting up SCOM to use restricted access via NT SERVICE\HealthService. Could the SCDPM services be reconfigured to a user account with permissions more in line with SQL role db_backupoperator. Thus not granting NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM users access to all data!! As DBA's we are not comfortable with that level of access (sysadmin) being granted to non-DBA's

  8. Continue Tape backups post minor issues similar to Disk 2 Disk backup

Currently during D2D backups if we encounter some failures like a file being corrupted DPM will continue the backup skipping the corrupted file and mention the details in a warning message. The request is to extend this feature for tape backups as well.

  9. dpm sql server backups

Dpm will auto protect databases on a sql server, but when a database is removed manual intervention is required. Please add functionality to un protect deleted databases.

  10. Backup from DPM to own Cloud Storage.

I have few domains which has own virtual DPM.

I want to backup it finally to central DPM with LTO.

  11. Support 3rd party SMTP providers

In MABS, you can setup an SMTP server for sending emails. The issue is that there is a requirement that the username you supply in the SMTP username field must be a domain user. I have no idea why this is required, but it makes using a 3rd party service such as SendGrid as your SMTP server much harder. In Sendgrid, I setup an API Key which then says I must supply the username as "apikey" and the password is the actual apikey.

Obviously, the user "apikey" does not exist in the domain, so when MABS checks this, it fails.

  12. Backup directly to blob

Allow for DPM to backup directly to blob storage in Azure without the need for local disk (or very little local disk/staging)

  13. Fix custom tape label bug

In DPM, when customising tape backups, you used to be able to set the label for the tape. This was great. Since 1807, this functionality is completely broken. Custom tape labels that existed prior to upgrading retain their custom tape label but you cannot change or set new tape labels for protection groups.

    Please fix this bug.

  16. Remove Tape Library, Tape Drives

We decomssioned our old tape library. Replaced it by a new one (other vendor). However now we have two libraries.

It is possible to disable the old one, but that still generates errors in the event log at SCOM can/will pick up and triggers an alert.

  18. Feature Request: DPM-Azure Recovery Vault

We want to have a feature where if we upgrade DPM Server including Storage, we really to continue with Incremetal job not Full backup job because it actually doubled our data in Azure and that is a pain fro cost point of viw

  19. DDBoost support

It would be great if DPM had DDBoost support or any option to use a Deduplication Appliance \ Storage.

  20. Copy from Cloud to Tape/Disk

As same as IaaS, Backup as a Service should allow customer to move backup to cloud and move back without any limitation.
