  6. Remove domain dependency for MABS

We have clients that have or are transitioning to the cloud fully, and may have one or two remaining on-prem servers and don't have a domain controller set up. MABS is the seemingly the only way we can back up a Hyper-V workstation or SQL database to an Azure vault, but MABS requires domain services on its host server as part of the pre-install checks. Even though MABS can backup up resources that are in workgroup mode, this domain dependency prevents us from using the tool and apparently isn't strictly required anyway. Would like to see this removed from MABS…

  9. Remove 64tb volume limit

We had a volume over 64tb in size, we had to shrink it to less to be able to back it up. This is a limitation on vss. Will it be ever enabled to back up volumes over 64TB?

  10. Suport for Installing DPM on Windows Server Core.

There are a few customer reached out to us to support installation of DPM on Windows Server Core. We need more vote and information on this.

We would like to know how do you like to manage DPM on the server core
    1. As much as possible using PowerShell Commands
    2. Some mandatory task locally using PowerShell and rest using DPM console remotely
    3. Install Appcompat on-demand feature on server core and use the DPM Console locally on server

Please up vote this idea if you would like to see this support added along with the comment on how do…

  11. Allow restore of backup of on-premise Hyper-v VM to Azure storage account as disk

Currently DPM and MABS allow you to protect on-premise Hyper-V VMs and retain in recovery services vault. The restore is allowed only on the on-premise Hyper-V server. In the scenario of completely lost on-premise infrastructure you can restore to on-premise even and even though the backups are stored on cloud you cannot restore to cloud.

In case of large VMs backup with limited network the restore might take days.

Would having option to restore the VM as disk to storage account help you in this scenario?
You can simply attach that disk to any existing VMs to get the required…

  13. Azure Backup automatic retry on temporary backup failure

I could not find any Microsoft documentation for the following scenario:

Scheduled backup job fails (let's say because the VM being backed up was shutdown). As per my understanding MABS should retry to backup without waiting for the next scheduled time.

    Ask:
Need a document that says MABS retries to backup when a backup job fails. Also, need to know the time it takes to retry again and how many retries before it gives up.

This kind of information should be there in documentation and I would be happy if it can be made available soon. If it's already there…

  14. Correct incorrect French Translation: Long term Tape Goal frequency is labelled as "Quotidiennement" / Daily, "Hebdomadaire" / Weekly, "Dt

Correct translation for Long Term Tape Frequency backup: There are 4 default options:
    "Quotidiennement" aka Daily
    "Hebdomadaire" aka Weekly
"Deux fois par semaine" which means "twice a week" and is in fact "every 2 weeks" which can be translated to "toutes les deux semaines"
    "Mensuel" aka Monthly.

  15. Support deduplication of the MBS ReFS volume directly

Currently the documents for DPM 2019 state:

    > DPM does not support deduplication on ReFS disk used for MBS backups.

It would be preferable that this is supported as it will provide better performance (not needing to create artificial fragmentation due to 1TB disks, wasted deduplication time due to empty space in a vhdx, no additional abstraction layer or multiple OSes running). Further, ReFS supports 4TB files for deduplication and would allow the deduplication of datasources larger than 1TB.

Currently I've been running this on a few servers and as far as I can tell there aren't any incompatibilities as…

  17. Fix console crashing on loss of connection to remote DPM server

If you use the DPM Administrator Console to administer remote DPM servers, if the connection to the remote DPM server is interrupted for whatever reason (network connectivity drop out, service crash and restart, DPM host computer restarts, etc.), the connected remote DPM console will crash spectacularly, report the bug to Microsoft then eventually terminate.

Please improve the console so it can be more resilient to communications failures between the console and the DPM computer. A loss of connection should not result in a catastrophic failure, rather, it should indicate a connection has been lost then offer to reconnect,

    This problem…

  18. Support 3rd party SMTP providers

In MABS, you can setup an SMTP server for sending emails. The issue is that there is a requirement that the username you supply in the SMTP username field must be a domain user. I have no idea why this is required, but it makes using a 3rd party service such as SendGrid as your SMTP server much harder. In Sendgrid, I setup an API Key which then says I must supply the username as "apikey" and the password is the actual apikey.

Obviously, the user "apikey" does not exist in the domain, so when MABS checks this, it fails.

  19. DPM 2016 Backup Items in Azure Portal

Right now DPM 1807 and 2019 will show a list of available Online Recovery points under Backup Items in the Recovery Services Valt in the Azure portal. For some reason DPM 2016 even with UR7 is excluded, even though you see the DPM server registered with the vault. Having visibility of what online recovery points DPM 2016 has created gives a simplified reporting mechanism for auditors, etc. when it is necessary to confirm that recovery points actually exist offsite.

  20. DPM 2019: Error 40002 – The VHD containing the replica or one of its snapshots could not be mounted or unmounted

This error was fixed for DPM 2016 in Update Rollup 7. Please fix this for DPM 2019 now, and not make us wait for Update Rollup 1 (Q3 '19 on the roadmap). Neither host nor client has anything to do with VHD's and this error still occurs daily.

The error 40002 could be reported in multiple scenarios of VHD mount and unmount failure.
    Here are more details -

WMI Out of memory (Fixed with UR7 for DPM 2016 and already part of DPM 2019 RTM):
One of the top scenario where we observed the 40002 error is due to WMI out of memory. In a scenario, where you see 40002 error in DPM Console and at the same time you may see WMI-Activity error event ID 5858 logged with Result code 0×80041006. This code translates to “not enough memory for the operation’. To address this issue, with DPM 2016 UR 7 we increased the default WMI memory limit from 20MB to 60MB by adding registry keys (details below). This change is already part of DPM 2019 RTM.

If you still see the same failure, the work around could be to increase this limit a bit…
