  3. Better QA for DPM

There are so many bugs with this product it is unbelievable. The product team also doesn't really care unless it has something to do with Azure backups. I definitely would recommend a different backup product given the current state of affairs with DPM.

  4. Central Administration of DPM servers without SCOM

Some customers don´t like the idea of setup a SCOM management group only to manage DPM servers using Central Console.
They want a way to centralize DPM servers administration without SCOM.

  5. Sql server 2017

Support for new versions of Sql Server with System Center Data Protection Manager is too slow, on average a year behind. When a new version Sql Server is released, a new version of DPM must be released at he samtime

  6. Service Security Identifiers (SID’s) to grant access for the service running SQL server,

SQL already uses Service Security Identifiers (SID’s) to grant access for the service running SQL server, to the SQL instance. Like setting up SCOM to use restricted access via NT SERVICE\HealthService. Could the SCDPM services be reconfigured to a user account with permissions more in line with SQL role db_backupoperator. Thus not granting NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM users access to all data!! As DBA's we are not comfortable with that level of access (sysadmin) being granted to non-DBA's

  7. Remove Tape Library, Tape Drives

We decomssioned our old tape library. Replaced it by a new one (other vendor). However now we have two libraries.

It is possible to disable the old one, but that still generates errors in the event log at SCOM can/will pick up and triggers an alert.

  8. Allow users to exclude folders of their choice of the protection

When you back up a large number of computers, and apply the same policy for everyone (2000 or 3000 computers), it would be very interesting to allow users to exclude certain subfolders.

In our case, we want to save the My Pictures folder, but a large number of users store private data (example: holiday photos), we do not want to find this data on our DPM servers, in this kind of case we would like to save the My Pictures folder but let the user exclude his private subfolders.

It would be a good compromise between security and freedom offered…

  9. Progress bar for DPM 2016 UR4 - Move Disk Storage

Using the new Move Disk Storage feature in UR4 turned out to be a painful process for me. I decided to move a large volume first, as I thought this would give me the most space back. Four full days later it finished with no indication that it was actually doing anything at all. To make matters worse the DPM console was out of action pretty much that whole time too.

What I propose is a progress bar for a move and possibly an estimated time at the start before you lock up you system for several days

  10. Allow backup of shares located on a Storage Spaces Direct SOFS with Azure Backup Server

For the moment it is not possible to backup files located on a SOFS using Storage Spaces Direct with Azure Backup Server or DPM

  11. Allow DPM to backup VMWare guests with Independent disks

Currently, VMDKs in "Independent" mode cause DPM protection jobs to fail when using VMWare protection. The fix (I assume) would be to allow DPM to support non-memory consistent snapshots.

    https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1007532
    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/dpm/2017/01/16/support-tip-dpm-recovery-point-or-consistency-check-for-a-protected-vmware-vm-fails-with-filefaultfault-error/

This currently prevents us from efficiently protecting Exchange and SQL workloads in VMWare.

  12. Moving disk storage in DPM 2016 UR4 - Allow the task window to be closed

When performing a 'Move disk storage' in DPM 2016 UR4 the task to perform the move currently doesn't offer the option to close the window and have the process run in the background.

Would be nice to be able to close the task window and allow continued use of the console while the move task completes.

  14. Provide MAB Server protected datasource’s size for customers to be able to calculate protected instance costs.

When setting up protection of instances, we need to see the actual size that is currently used for calculating the cost of that instance.
This size should be displayed in the protected instance pane in Azure and be aggregated up to other overview panes in the vault.
This way, we could use the Cost calculator to predict the monthly costs of the actual data. The sizes should be available via Powershell as well for reporting purposes.

  16. Reproducible bug: Get-DPMCloudSubscription fails to return data when run within a scheduled task.

Take this basic script as an example, call it AzureSizeTest.PS1 and run it on your DPM server that has an Azure backup:

    $Log = "$env:windir\temp\test.log"
    Get-DPMCloudSubscription | Out-File $Log

It will give you the space used in your subscription like this:
    SubscriptionName : Azure Backup
    UsedSpace : 2265763566598
    TotalSpace : 2265763566598
    StorageQueriedTime : 18/01/2018 13:15:42
    RegistrationStatus : AgentInstalledAndRegistered

The UsedSpace will match the figure in the Management >> Online section in DPM.

If you then run that script as a scheduled task the output is:

    SubscriptionName : Azure Backup
    UsedSpace : 0
    TotalSpace : 322122547200
    StorageQueriedTime : 18/01/2018 13:23:42
    RegistrationStatus…

  17. DPM and Azure Backup Server - Reduce the severty of the alert ID 33344

This alert is about skipped backups due to the last disk backup already backed to cloud.
The severity of this alert should be modified, from critical to warning.

  18. File-level restore from online recovery point for vmware backup

Item/file-level restore from vmware snapshot backups is only possible from short-term disk recovery points. Please add the option to restore a single file from a online recovery point instead the need of restoring the whole VM.

  19. Feature Request: DPM-Azure Recovery Vault

We want to have a feature where if we upgrade DPM Server including Storage, we really to continue with Incremetal job not Full backup job because it actually doubled our data in Azure and that is a pain fro cost point of viw

  20. Selecting a recovery point in SCDPM does not indicate when there are Azure RPs.

The dates on the calendar in DPM Recovery can not be selected when there is an Azure RP available. Showing all RPs will show the Azure RPs and they can be recovered from there.
