Azure Monitor

Azure Monitor Action Groups enable you to configure how to receive notifications when an Azure Monitor Alert is triggered.

  1. Add a pin to workbook feature

It would be great if we could pin visualizations where possible to workbooks, like we can pin from various views in Azure to our Azure Dashboard. Either a separate / different pin button, or the pin button giving us the option to pin to a workbook (or Azure dashboard) where possible.

  2. RBAC role within shared Log Analytics workspace to allow users to only query their own data

When multiple subscriptions are feeding security and performance logs into a single, shared workspace it is not currently possible for users to create their own alerts based on just the data generated from their own resources. There is a level of granularity missing. The current options are to either allow users to query ALL contents of the workspace (a clear violation of the principle of least privilege), or to allow users to query NONE of the contents.

  3. Add Microsoft Teams webhook integration with Azure Alerts

Currently if an alert is triggered in Azure and you want to get a notification sent to a Teams Channel via Webhook this is not possible. You have to build a custom Logic App or Automation Runbook to post to a Microsoft Teams Channel.

Direct integration between Azure Alert and Microsoft Teams is preferred over additional setup and management of a Logic App or Automation Runbook.

  4. Set the axis tick marks in Azure Monitor

Currently, the axis tick marks in Azure Monitor are calculated automatically based on the data.

There are situations where I would like to see a more detailed the axis tick.
So I'd like to see a feature developed to set the axis scale in Azure Monitor!

  5. Allow for trigger of Alert Action Group

Allow an action group to be manually triggered by some other means (Powershell, Rest API...). This would allow for an alert to trigger an automation account and/or a logic app for more advanced processing of the alert and then trigger another action group to actually process the notification. Without this option, the automation account and/or logic app would then need to handle the notification which can be rather difficult at scale.

This would also allow for an action group to be tested to confirm that it is working without having to force the criteria for which the alert was made.

  6. The unit on metric explorer should be unified among all services

Currently, it looks like the unit on metric explorer is different between each resource provider. Some resource use MB, others use MiB for showing the metric. However, this isn't user-friendly. It would be great if you could unify the unit for all services.

  7. Do not display a value until the correct value can be shown

The Metrics for the App Service Plan is plotting out the graph as zero even though it later updates to correct value. This should be fixed so that NO VALUE is plotted until the actual correct value can be plotted.

Why plot an incorrect value? Very confusing, especially for new users of Azure.

No value is MUCH better than an INCORRECT value.

We had a support case for this, and the response was that MS wants to plot out values as soon as possible eve though they are partial, which is great, but to show incorrect values is a VERY…

  8. Ability to filter storage logs

When there are a lot of calls to the storage the new diagnostic settings can be a bit too verbose and thus create a lot of Log Analytics costs. In my case it was so bad that Log Analytics cost more than the storage itself. There should be an option to filter out some actions / users before the logs are being sent over to Log Analytics.

  9. Configure Activity Log Diagnostic Settings Via Powershell or CLI

Currently the only method is to use ARM to configure diagnostic settings for activity log
    As documented in here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-monitor/platform/diagnostic-settings-template

This is important feature, we always need the configuration for compliance reason and send the activity log to storage account.

It will be helpful if we can use powershell or CLI to do the configuration, in legacy approach, we do have options to use Add-AzLogProfile (storage account and event hub) and New-AZOperationalInsightsAzureActivityLogDataSource (log analytics workspace)

  11. Configure whether alerts should fire when data in lookback window is incomplete

Currently, alert rules will fire when the condition(s) are met, even when the data for the lookback window is incomplete.

    Here's an example:
An alert rule is configured for CPU Percentage > 90% with a 15-minute lookback window, splitting by VM resource dimension. A new VM is created with 100% CPU for the first minute, and the alert rule is evaluated at the end of the first minute. The alert rule currently triggers, even though there was only 1 minute worth of data (data is incomplete).

The desire here is to be able to configure whether the alert rule should…

  12. Sort the list of templates in an action group in combination with the ITSM Connector

When you add an ITSM Connector action to an action group you have to select a template for an incident workitem. This list of templates is not sorted and there is also not an option to filter. With sometimes hundreds of templates this is an absolute nightmare. Start by sorting the list of templates. Adding an option to filter as well would be a great addition.

  14. Email notification action missing confirmation

I am new to Azure and was playing around with Azure monitor [Alerts etc.].
I noticed when i create a action group and setup email as an action, I am asked to enter the email address, where notification would be sent.
I see Azure is not sending a confirmation email for recipient to confirm this action.
With this i could spam any one even if someone has not opted to receive these emails.
I feel this is a very bad design and should be fixed ASAP.
From my AWS experience, I know AWs always sends a conformation email and corresponding…

  15. Include Windows Defender Logs in Windows Event Logs

Windows Defender Operational Logs are not available when using the Windows Event Logs. Specifically, these logs:
    Microsoft-Windows-Windows Defender Operational

It would be great if this could be included.

  16. Map entity-based Investigation features of Azure Sentinel to Azure Monitor

A great feature of Azure Sentinel is the Investigation pane. Security events with identifiable unique entities like host, user, computer, URL provide context to available investigation options. Such as pre-staging a query about 'Active processes on a computer' when investigating a firewall alert about a computer entity (bridging access to the computer data from an alert on the firewall data, since Azure Log Analytics has all the data already). Bring this over to Azure Monitor using computer-centric entities like storage, disk, memory, network. Provide context sensitive pivot in a possible Azure Monitor Investigation pane to answer questions like "How many…

  17. Scaling in should permit OR conditions so it matches the scale out parameter set

... but not the parameter values (no flapping). I mean i can set

    ScaleOut
    CPU > 70% OR Memory > 60%

but Scale In can only be something like
    CPU < 50% AND Memory < 40%

    and not
    CPU < 50% OR Memory < 40%

  18. Move the Supress alert from General Alert detail

Move the Supress setting from the general details of the alert since it is only for Action groups. Alerts are still being fired every time the rule runs.

  19. Data Collector API - Return error code if daily cap was reached

Currently, when we are sending log data via Data Collector API and we have reached daily cap quota, the API still returns 200 OK response. Data are discarded silently in this case. Since whole purpose of Data Collector API is to simply insert new records to Azure Monitor, from our point of view, any failure to do so shloud return some HTTP error code. This would enable error handling on senders side as it should be with any API.

  20. Add an option for a demo of service health alert

Currently, there is no demo option for service health alerts, and an user can receive alerts only when an actual incident occurs. However, some customers would like to check if the alert works properly before configuring it in a production environment. Therefore, it would be great if the user could fire a service helth alert as a test.
