Azure IoT Central

Azure IoT Central is your IoT app platform that's highly secure, scales with your business as it grows, ensures your investments are repeatable, and integrates with your existing business apps.
  • Get connected: Azure IoT Central connects your IoT devices to the cloud faster than any other platform. Find new devices matched to your solution in the Azure Certified for IoT device catalog.
  • Stay connected: We understand how hard it is to keep devices connected and healthy. Centralized management helps you reconfigure and update them.
  • Transform: Our connectors and extensibility APIs bridge the gap between your business applications and IoT—providing a direct connection between IoT data and your decision makers.

  1. Include ALL the IoT DevKit Sensor capabilities in the IoT Central Device Template

Currently, the MXChip IoT DevKit Device Template for IoT Central only caters for 3 of the sensors. The others should be available also to unleash the potential of the device easily for everyone.

Update the Device Template to include all the MXChip IoT DevKit capabilities, such as motion (accelerometer & gyroscope), sound (decibels), magnetometer.

  2. Limit devices by Group

I want to limit devices by group,
for allow some devices can view / operate by some members of a group,
and some other devices can view / operate by some members of other group.

    Scenario,
West region members can view / operate the devices in west region,
East region members can view / operate the devices in east region.

  3. Support measurements, events and states to formulate a device set conditions

The current implementation only supports adding properties to the conditions for Device-Sets.
    We recommend to Support
Last Known Values, Event, and State in the query predicate.

  4. OTA firmware update

    As an Admin,
I need to set up a blob to upload all my firmware and browse available versions (filter grid by date, description and version numbers)
I need to run some query to identify all the devices that are "out-of-version" using the Version property.

I need to start a Job to command all the devices in the query to UpdateFirmware to a particular version:
    The command has 3 parameters:
    1) File Path
    2) SAS readonly token (expires in 8 hours)
    3) MD5 (or another cyclical signature)

The firmware will be intelligent enough to understand the UpdateFirmware command and download…

  5. Ability to view device connection logs

It would be very helpful from a troubleshooting perspective to have access to the device logs. E.g. when a device connects or disconnects, or if there are issues with the telemetry being sent.
There's very little capability to troubleshoot IoT Central.

IoT Hub has the ability to do this, and it would be useful to expose this functionality to the integrated IoT Hub in Central as well: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/iot-hub/iot-hub-monitor-resource-health

  6. Dashboard properties, event and state grids need sort and filter

The header columns for device properties, event, and state grids should be sortable and like Power BI, nice if there was a way to filter only selected values.

  7. Specify Devices for Azure IoT Central Continuous Export

I have not found a way to control which devices are included in Continuous Export (to Blobs), and several devices are being stored including two simulated devices of interest only during testing are being exported. Is there a way to specify which devices are included, and if not, could the "device set" be employed for this purpose - essentially say "export device set X"?

    Hi Sam,

We recently shipped the new data export which does allow for filtering based on capabilities and device template, device ID, and device name.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/iot-central/core/howto-export-data

We are planning to add more device filters here like simulated, approved, provisioned, etc.

Please let us know what specific kinds of filters you are looking for.

    Thanks,
Vivian on behalf of the Azure IoT Central team

  8. Scheduled jobs

It would be very nice to be able to schedule a job. Select date & hour and save it. Kinda like scheduled facebook posts.

    Hi Romane,

Thank you for your feedback. The ability to schedule a job is on our roadmap. I’d love to hear more about your scenario and how you would use scheduling jobs within your application.

    Thanks,
Sarah on behalf of the Azure IoT Central team

  10. Support Byte payload (Add JavaScript Decode)

Must of commercial devices will send payloads in Byte format. It's not common to find a device that sends a json payload as simulated due it's size, overloading network.

Give us an option to decode the payload.

    Example payload description attached
    Example payload encode/decode attached

  11. Make the SAS Time To Live configurable

For cellular traffic, it is desirable to reconnect only once a day, but for WiFi or Ethernet, it should be more aggressive.

    Reduce the connectivity overhead.

  12. Get a list of all attached child-devices for a gateway

There should be a REST API Endpoint that returns a list of all attached child-devices for a provisioned gateway using identity translation in IoT-Central (e.g. a list of device-ids for all attached child-devices/downstream-devices)

  13. Views for Commands

Some commands can break the device's behavior.
Device-side logic should be added to mitigate, but in the same way that the properties are customizable, commands should be exposed n a view by the builder role.

  14. Event Chart needs to align in time with range selected

You brought back the Event Chart markers, kudos. but we still missing the ability to mix telemetry with events as in M2.

If there are design restrictions and cannot have tiles with mixed elements, then at least the time axis needs to cover the entire range selected (last 30 minutes for example).

Today, If I select the last 30 minutes, but I only have one or few events, the chart optimizes the view and zooms into the current event(s).

    Uses:
I want to plot total memory but capture the power cycle events.
    I want to capture a high-temperature alarm but…

  15. Dashboard by Device Set on v2 for common tiles

IOTC v1 has custom dashboards per device set but it is missing from v2.
=> Granted there are no "common" tiles in v2.

Maybe the logic should be reversed in v2.

Show a Dashboard that has some common tiles (maps, events)
and allow filtering the dashboard with a device set dropdown

  16. Event History Tiles do not update

Event history tiles on device dashboards do not update. In our proof of concept app we can see live updates of telemetry data but events do not show up.

The event data appears immediately after reloading the page.

  17. Support Search box in the device navigation

We have a solution with many devices that we imported. the DeviceID and Device Name originate from a MAC address.
The Device View paginates poorly and it is required to click the next link 10-15 times before the expected device is listed.

It is very difficult to find a device in the collection.

We would like to see on the toolbar a search box, with free form text that will return any device that matches any twin property.

Example: typing 1.0.45, will search for all the devices with FirwareVersion 1.0.45

Even better if the search box filters the device grid…

  18. Implement Parent/Child relationships for non-edge devices

The portal currently exposes a way to create non-edge child devices, but the data is not flowing.
    Suggestion:
Keep only one connection for the gateway (no need to multiplex) but route the special iot-child property in the event message with the child's device ID. Some security handshake needs to occur first

  19. Views that combine fields from a few devices that participate in a relationship

As part of modeling, I would like to publish a form that has selected elements from Gateway and Devices bind with a relationship.

    Example:
    A truck = Tractor + Trailer
The Gateway is in the Tractor and there is a child Device in the Trailer.

I would like to show a view of my combined truck

  20. Device Template: Configuring Settings - Show the default (Initial) value in the UI

Currently when creating a new setting in a Device Template, the "Initial Value" used originally is actually displayed in the UI when this new setting is Saved. However, later if we were to edit this setting and update the "Initial Value" then this newly updated values is not reflected in the UI upon saving this setting. The UI continues to display the original Initial value.

We were expecting that the UI will update with the new value, but perhaps this is by design? (that UI always show the original Initial vale). So that is why we wanted to request a…
