  1. SSMS support for APS/PDW

I understand SSMS supports Azure DW, that should make it even easier to add the support for APS/PDW in SSMS.

    • APS: Improve on control node bottleneck for data return rate

With AU4 it was claimed that the data return rate for APS should improve for select * queries

The real world improvements do not seem to exist from this feature and the control node seems to still be a big bottleneck for this kind of task being saturated with 100% CPU Load.

The scenario in which we need this is when processing a large cube with plenty of large partitions being processed in parallel.

Compare my screenshot for figures from our environment.

      Specs:
APS HP Half rack (Patch: v10.0.8026.0)
      40 core E7-8891 v2 512GB RAM + 12TB FusionIO SSAS only…

      • Using APS PDW on-prem. Not having Primary Key Constraints is a big issue.

I've had to create an audit process using a control table that holds the primary key columns for all the tables and a procedure that spins through all the tables looking for duplicate counts based off those keys. After 2 years of adding tables with no validation for this, the first time I ran the audit 6 months ago, it found duplication in more than 10-20% of our tables. We're still cleaning up our legacy ETL feeds and removing duplicates. Looking for and cleaning up duplicates after they hit the system is very inefficient.

        • Microsoft APS : Please increase Sessions from current 32 (Load 10 ,Query 22) to greater than 64

Microsoft APS : Please increase Sessions from current 32 (Load 10 ,Query 22) to greater than 64

Justification : in real world we are seeing more adhoc users usage + Loads so 32 is very small which is creating huge ripple effect on APS Query Performance & user satisfaction.

          • For APS PDW, add abiltiy to name indexes within the create table script and from visual studio script the indexes with thier names.

We have a naming standard for our indexes but since we can't script the name of the index in a create table command, we have to use a separate create index command. This is a bit of a hassle when moving objects around. Viewing the code of a table in Visual Studio does not include the index names so when we use this function we have to manually change the script it generates.

            • APS Backup to Name instead of IP

Right now the only supported way to backup APS is to an IP Address (UNC path), please add the ability to backup to a FQDN path.

              • Please support Columnstore Indexes for tables which have Varchar(max)

Many of our tables have VARCHAR(MAX) columns which means we cannot use columnstore indexes. This limits performance of these tables. Please allow support for columnstore with varchar(max) as per SMP editions of SQL Server.
