Azure Maps

Azure Maps is a portfolio of geospatial services that include service APIs for Maps, Search, Routing, Traffic and Time Zones. The portfolio of Azure OneAPI compliant services allows you to use familiar developer tools to quickly develop and scale solutions that integrate location information into your Azure solutions. Azure Maps provides developers from all industries powerful geospatial capabilities packed with fresh mapping data imperative to providing geographic context to web and mobile applications.

More details about the services are available in the Azure Maps documentation. If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. Historic Traffic Flow data

    Historical traffic data, for example, vehicle flow (annual average daily traffic) can be measured as the number of vehicles per hour past a specific point or transferring a specific section. You typically get data such as 50 vehicles per hour or 1000 vehicles per day per lane. This allows you to derive charts such as the attached. The vertical axis refers to vehicles and the horizontal axis is simply the 24 hours per day.
    This type of information is used, among others, to plan for road capacity expansion, transport modeling, etc. We typically collect this data with “loops” on the…

  2. Support for humedity date for "Weather - Get Daily Forecast" API

    I can try the Get Daily Forecast API at the following site:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/ja-jp/rest/api/maps/weather/getdailyforecastpreview

    The description says that you can get the humidity, but at present, the response does not include the humidity. I want it to support "humidity" when GA.

    • confirmed that the Hourly Forecast API includes "humidity".

  3. Support for historical weather

    I was excited when I first heard that the Azure Maps service was going to add weather data. Unfortunately, it looks like the service only supports current conditions and weather forecasts. It would be great to also be able to get historical conditions - daily averages would be good, hourly would be great.

  5. Cities near another city

    Lets consider that use case: I search on my application which allows to get doctors available in a specific city. A scenario would be to have 0 result on city I requested but the alternative would be to provide doctors available on neighbors city (on a specific radius ) of the one we queryed.

    The idea is to add an GET method allowing to get neighbors city of another city by passing the city name (or its zipcode) and and radius

    Not 100% clear on what is being asked here. Most cities do not have borders that align with other cities. Many have open area between city boundaries (i.e. rural area). So finding a neighboring city that shares a border isn’t really an option. A couple of options, we could find other nearby cities within a search radius, it that is suitable. Or in the case of looking for doctors, you could simply do a radius search for doctors. That said, a better option when it comes to searching for points of interest is to do a time based search. For example, find all doctors within a 15 minute drive. Most people are more concerned about how long something takes than how far something is. There is a tutorial showing this concept here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-maps/tutorial-ev-routing

  6. Angular map component

    There should be an Angular component which would make easier to integrate Azure maps with Angular (the most popular JS framework) applications.

  8. Toll road icons looks bad

    Toll roads icons on road are too frequents and are too prominent.

    Is there any option to hide them? or are you planing to edit them in a next release?

  9. Add buildings details to map

    Azure has very little detail when zooming in (https://jsfiddle.net/rxck4q3j/2/) in comparison with Bing, for instance (https://binged.it/2LqcIFw). Since both are part of Microsoft, maybe the teams could share data so that Azure can also have the buildings showing up when zooming in.

  10. Improve Street Name Labeling

    Labeling is too big and too aggressive, I would say.

    Take a look at Azure (https://jsfiddle.net/rxck4q3j/2/) and Google for comparison (https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.4615805,-6.2244948,17z)

    In Azure, In the main streets "Rathbeale Rd" and "Watery Ln" font is too big so it doesn't fit inside the road. The labels also repeat too often, very close together.

    They also should not be dark black, I'd grey'd them out a little.

  11. Return all addresses with a specified postal code

    In the UK postal codes typically represent a single building in major cities or 100 or less addresses in rural areas. It would be great if there was a feature where instead of geocoding the postal code and getting a result for the postal code, if instead we could get all addresses associated with that postal code. For example: NW1 7AW in the UK has 86 addresses, all on Hampstead road.

    This would be great for scenarios where the geocoding service is being used to help users fill in an address form.

  12. Danish municipalities and regions are outdated

    When searching for Danish addresses the results for both municipalities and regions seem to follow the pre 2007 standard as described in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:DK E.g. the municipality of Nordborg was merged with Sønderborg and the region of Sønderjylland was merged with others to form Southern Jutland.

  15. atlas.Control interface onAdd property should return HTMLElement | null

    In azure-maps-control 2.0.21 typings https://www.npmjs.com/package/azure-maps-control, the Control interface has a property called onAdd.

    onAdd(map: Map, options?: ControlOptions): HTMLElement;

    If we want to prevent the control from being added, because a validation failed, shouldn't null be returned? Just like in the following AzureMapSample:
    https://github.com/Azure-Samples/AzureMapsCodeSamples/blob/master/AzureMapsCodeSamples/Custom%20Modules/Fullscreen%20Control/FullScreenControl.ts#L191

    Returning null causes a TS compilation error, onAdd is expecting an HTMLElement not HTMLElement | null.

    Current:
    onAdd(map: Map, options?: ControlOptions): HTMLElement;

    Expected:
    onAdd(map: Map, options?: ControlOptions): HTMLElement | null;

    Add native support for a 3d or globe view, rather than having to rely on external libraries like Cesium or WebGL Earth.

  19. ' is not supported in pin's name

    When using the rest render api (static image) with ' in pin's name, it could not display correctly.

    Tried escaping, then encoding the ' to %2527 but this does not work. Using the escaped value for ' which is %27 causes an error

  20. Give Access without User Access Administrator permission required

    I'm currently automating the provisioning of Azure Maps + Client App. The client authenticates using a Managed Identity for Azure.

    However, in order to give the Managed Identity access to Azure Maps, I need to have permission to this action:
    Microsoft.Authorization/roleAssignments/write

    This action is not normally given to Service Principals, and it's not great from a security perspective. The required role is User Access Administrator

    So I would like to be able to give Maps reader permission to a managed identity, WITHOUT needing the User Access Administrator role on my Service Principal.

    A good example is KeyVault. With KeyVault, access…
