Azure Maps

Azure Maps is a portfolio of geospatial services that include service APIs for Maps, Search, Routing, Traffic and Time Zones. The portfolio of Azure OneAPI compliant services allows you to use familiar developer tools to quickly develop and scale solutions that integrate location information into your Azure solutions. Azure Maps provides developers from all industries powerful geospatial capabilities packed with fresh mapping data imperative to providing geographic context to web and mobile applications.

More details about the services are available in the Azure Maps documentation. If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. Pricing is beyond bad

    I've said this before, and my idea was rejected because it was considered "an edge case". It seems though that the reviewers didn't bother to read my entire post.

    In my old post (https://feedback.azure.com/forums/909172-azure-maps/suggestions/36265189-pricing-is-really-bad), I gave *an example* of how the service becomes ridiculously more expensive just by changing one variable (QPS). However, the reviewer focused only on that example and didn't bother about the rest.

    Now, here I am again facing the same problem, now with satellite images.
    We need to use satellite images in one of our maps. However, just because of that, our cost increases…

  2. ' is not supported in pin's name

    When using the rest render api (static image) with ' in pin's name, it could not display correctly.

    Tried escaping, then encoding the ' to %2527 but this does not work. Using the escaped value for ' which is %27 causes an error

  3. Give Access without User Access Administrator permission required

    I'm currently automating the provisioning of Azure Maps + Client App. The client authenticates using a Managed Identity for Azure.

    However, in order to give the Managed Identity access to Azure Maps, I need to have permission to this action:
    Microsoft.Authorization/roleAssignments/write

    This action is not normally given to Service Principals, and it's not great from a security perspective. The required role is User Access Administrator

    So I would like to be able to give Maps reader permission to a managed identity, WITHOUT needing the User Access Administrator role on my Service Principal.

    A good example is KeyVault. With KeyVault, access…

  4. Angular map component

    There should be an Angular component which would make easier to integrate Azure maps with Angular (the most popular JS framework) applications.

  5. Cities near another city

    Lets consider that use case: I search on my application which allows to get doctors available in a specific city. A scenario would be to have 0 result on city I requested but the alternative would be to provide doctors available on neighbors city (on a specific radius ) of the one we queryed.

    The idea is to add an GET method allowing to get neighbors city of another city by passing the city name (or its zipcode) and and radius

    Not 100% clear on what is being asked here. Most cities do not have borders that align with other cities. Many have open area between city boundaries (i.e. rural area). So finding a neighboring city that shares a border isn’t really an option. A couple of options, we could find other nearby cities within a search radius, it that is suitable. Or in the case of looking for doctors, you could simply do a radius search for doctors. That said, a better option when it comes to searching for points of interest is to do a time based search. For example, find all doctors within a 15 minute drive. Most people are more concerned about how long something takes than how far something is. There is a tutorial showing this concept here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-maps/tutorial-ev-routing

  6. Shape class: expose a getCircleCoordinates method

    With the latest release of azure-map-control, v 2.0.10, the `Shape` class now correctly shows a `circlePolygon` property that was missing, but it is marked as `private` so TypeScript will throw an error that it is only accessible within the class.

    It would be great if we could have a `getCircleCoordinates` method that returns the `circlePolygon.geometry.coordinates` when `shape.isCircle()` is true.

    Something like:

    /**
    * Gets the coordinates of the contained shape if it is a Circle.
    */
    getCircleCoordinates(): atlas.data.Position[][] | null;

    There are two options for doing this already. The first option is to use the toJson function. This will generate a GeoJSON polygon for the circle. The coordinates will then be easy to access using geometry.coordinates. A second option is to use the atlas.math.getRegularPolygonPath function to generate the points of the circle, this is what the shape class uses under the hood.

  7. az maps account create doesn't seem to work

    the following code works, but always results in a 403 forbidden error when you call the API. If I create the resource in the portal then the calls work. The calls below should work when calling the API
    AzMapsName="azmaps"
    ResGroup="rgAzMaps"
    location="eastus2"

    az group create --name $ResGroup --location $location

    az provider register --namespace "Microsoft.Maps"

    az maps account create \
    --name $AzMapsName \
    --resource-group $ResGroup \
    --accept-tos \
    --sku "S0"

    az maps account keys list --name $AzMapsName --resource-group $ResGroup
    echo "Make sure you copy the primarykey from the output to the variable in the correct cell above and run the cell"

  8. Improve Geocoding Results for addresses with 5+4 digits ZCTA

    Geocoder is giving results in incorrect score order for some addresses with 5+4 digits ZCTA...

    Go to https://azuremapscodesamples.azurewebsites.net/REST%20Services/Search%20Autosuggest%20and%20JQuery%20UI.html

    Search for "1833 S CHURCH ST, BURLINGTON, NC, 27215-5553", first result is Street, and the second one is the correct one. Searching for "1833 S CHURCH ST, BURLINGTON, NC, 27215" gives the correct one.

    Just a sample of other examples where it happens:
    - "5198 VALLEYDALE RD, BIRMINGHAM, AL, 35242-3756" vs "5198 VALLEYDALE RD, BIRMINGHAM, AL, 35242"
    - "7510 THOMAS DR, PANAMA CITY, FL, 32408-8529" vs "7510 THOMAS DR, PANAMA CITY, FL, 32408"
    - "4915 HIGHWAY 433 W, BENTONIA, MS, 39040-8417" vs…

  11. More detail when zoomed out

    We are finding that when zoomed out to display a long route on the map, there is no detail on the map other than the route and markers. We feel it needs some reference points to show major roads and suburbs to give some perspective on the route.

    The map view in most cases for us consists of just grey background with the route line and marker when showing an overview of the Route across Australia, which is not helpful.

  13. Adding a clearer style for map tiles over satellite tiles

    Azure Map's label or hybrid layer are not thought to look legible over satellite tiles. Since the text color is black with white borders (and white roads with black borders) it looks painfully awful to use.

    Attached is a simple Azure vs Mapbox comparison.

  14. Extend "Search - Get Search Fuzzy" Method

    Would be great to have an opportunity to include or exclude POI categories.
    For example: i only want railway station and airports; or i don't want any parking garage in my result

    The countrySet Flag is great, but it would be good to go more deep:
    - I want the countrySet DE and AT but from AT i only want the countrySubdivision Salzburg

  16. IP Geolocation: Support for local IPs, TOR exit nodes, proxies, data center IPs

    When I send a request with my local IP (127.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.123) I get a response without a country code. It would be great if you could extend the model and include additional properties about that IP. In addition it would be great to know if the IP is used as a TOR exit node, or a known proxy server or a datacenter IP (AWS, Azure etc).

  17. IP Geolocation: Add countryCodeISO3 Property to model

    We have been using the Azure Maps API for a while now and since the address search api returns an address with a 'countryCodeISO3' property, we started using the 3 letter code. The Geolocation API now returns the 2 letter code, Ideally the model would include the 3 letter code as well or maybe an additional parameter could control the behaviour, so that we don't have to "translate" it on our side from 2 to 3 letters.

  18. Add consistent way to get city name from structured address data

    When using the freeform search endpoint, address results will have structured fields along with the 'freeformAddress'.

    Most parts of the mailing address can be read from existing fields (streetNumber, streetName, countrySubdivision, postalCode) however the city does not seem to be represented consistently.

    In some cases the city from the freeform address is the municipalitySubdivision, in others its the countryTertiarySubdivision. As a result, to extract structured address data to use for mailing addresses we have had to resort to parsing the freeformAddress to get the city name from there as it seems to always match the intended mailing address.

    I would…

  20. Ability to query addresses in multiple languages simultaneously

    Streets and cities may have names in multiple languages, and we don't always know in advance which language the user is going to query the parts of the address in. If we return with default language, the user sees the result in one language, but the street address may have been in different language than the city name in the query. In order to check that street and city was indeed the ones given by the user, it would be helpful to get results in multiple languages instead of one.

    In practice, this would mean 1) allowing a list of…
