SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server 2017 powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server 2017 brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.

  1. ssms

Enable VsVim support in SSMS 2018.

It would be extremely useful to have a vim-like editor experience for SSMS. VsVim is awesome for Visual Studio. What would it take to get VsVim working as an extension to SSMS?

The screenshot you added is about SSMS 18.0, not SSMS 17.×. Are you saying this is happening for both products?

Are there any hidden windows (e.g. fo you see anything if you do ALT+TAB)? What happens when you kill it and start it again? Same thing?

Did you try to uninstall and reinstall SSMS 18.0?

    Thanks,
    -Matteo

  5. System Stand By + SSMS Debugger = hung and disabled SSMS

If Windows is sent into Stand By mode while the SSMS debugger is running, SSMS is disabled when system is resumed from Stand By.

  6. SSMS Automatic Updates

When there is a new update for SSMS, notifications pop up on the desktop and following the notifications through leads to the SSMS update window, then the user has to download a whole new package (~800mb) before reinstalling over the current (older) installation of SSMS.

  9. SSMS 17.x invisible toolbar icons. SSMS depends on Visual Studio 2015.

Without VS2015, SSMS 2017 icons no display correctly. Badly what SSMS 2017 cant repair all required files.

  10. SSMS 18

When double clicking on an sql file, a new instance of SSMS 18 will start up, but the file never opens. This never happened when I was using SSMS 17.8. I'm running on Windows 10 OS.

This is indeed a known issue in SSMS 18.0 (up until Preview 6).

I expect to have a fix in the next Preview.

In the meanwhile, you can workaround it by doing this:
    1) Close SSMS
    2) Edit the following file …\Common7\IDE\Extensions\Application\ssms.Application.pkgdef by replacing
    “DDEApplication”=“ssms.18.0”
    with
    “DDEApplication”=“ssms.15.0”
    3) Save the file

    Thanks,
    -Matteo

  12. SSMS crash

Why does SSMS crash constantly? I can not run a query that takes a long time. I've lost several hours of work and all versions since 17 have the same problem.
When do you think about making SSMS truly stable?

This error occurs at least 10 times a day. Several other times simply the SSMS closes.

An error occurred while executing batch. Error message is: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.

  13. Some settings in SSMS are lost when you open SSMS from Explorer

If I open SSMS from Explorer by right-clicking a file and select SSMS and later close SSMS, I lose some of my settings. Not all, for instance keyboard shortcuts and fonts are retained. This occurs with SSMS 17.1. The list of settings below is not likely to be exhaustive of settings that are lost, but those the ones I need to restore.

  15. SSMS 2016 Hangs frequently

    SSMS 2016 hangs one-to-several times a day.
I have not been able to detect a consistent pattern that triggers the behavior. I almost always also have SSMS 2014 open.
The only recourse I've found is to use Task Manager to kill it. And when I restart SSMS, even if I say no to prompt, it restores files anyway.
SSMS 2016: 13.0.15700.28 SQL Server install on the workstation is 12.0.4468.0
It also loses option changes (such as Text Editor - Transact-SQL - Tabs) saved in the options dialog before having to kill the SSMS process.

In my case it loses the current connection of the Query panel, pops up a new connection window with the correct settings, but hangs and cannot be interrupted ! ( I have to Kill ssms using Task Manager )

Everything I’ve clicked on, on the way to restoring a database, makes me wait at least 30 seconds before the next dialog shows up.

This problem occurs all the time for me. It seem to happen most frequently when doing Right-Mouse clicks.

  16. SSMS 18 GA crashes on start

I have been using runas.exe to run SSMS as different user.
I have been using SSMS 18 previous preview version but this only happen on SSMS 18 GA.
Once SSMS crashes for some reasons, it can never be restarted--i open SSMS (even with current user) the logo flashes and that's it.

    reboot OS won't help.
repair by installation file won't help

the only way is to uninstall and reinstall ssms 18.

    Could you help me troubleshoot?
