SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server 2017 powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server 2017 brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

    • New SQL version of SQL Server

Would love to see sql server go the direction of nuodb or memsql and implement a fully distributed version of MS SQL SERVER.

        • dont remove debugging from ssms 18.0

          what is ssms:

SSMS is an integrated environment for managing any SQL infrastructure, from SQL Server to Azure SQL Database. SSMS provides tools to configure, monitor, and administer instances of SQL. Use SSMS to deploy, monitor, and upgrade the data-tier components used by your applications, as well as build queries and scripts.

          --> build queries and scripts

if you remove debugging from ssms --> https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2018/10/03/ssms-18-0-public-preview-released/

ssms will be degraded to an simple editor with some nice helpers to write sql but not an integrated enveronment to write scripts and common database objects.

every developer will write good and working code,…

          • T-SQL for changing table column order

Once a table is created, the ordinal position of the columns is fixed. This is especially problematic for large data warehouse tables, where new columns are expected to be added over time.

The only solution currently to re-order columns is to drop and recreate the table (or let the SSMS designer do this for you), but this is often not feasible for a large, highly used table, and it cannot be easily scripted.

Please add some ALTER syntax that will allow changing column order.

              • Double click on *.sql file opens another instance of SSMS

                When you have:
                1. SSMS set up as a default editor for *.sql files (and)
                2. SSMS already started with "Connect to Database Engine" dialog window open
and you are trying open a .sql file by double-click, it starts another instance of SSMS and opens .sql file there.
My suggestion is to change the behavior to open the file in the exisiting instance of SSMS.

                • DATETRUNC(datepart,datevalue) instead of dateadd-datediff

The generally accepted way to truncate some part of a datetime is:
                  DATEADD(datepart,0,DATEDIFF(datepart,0,datevalue))
To save us from much typing, and probalby a good amount of CPU due to a good implementation, I propose we create a new function exactly for that:
                  DATETRUNC(datepart,datevalue)
which rids the datevalue of any component LESS than datepart (ie, truncates it to the dateart level)

                  • Have SSMS respect a Resource Lock

When I set a lock on the Resource Group where my Azure SQL Server and DB reside - I can still delete the DB using SQL Server Management Studio This action should at least generate a prompt in SSMS indicating a Resource Lock has been set

SSMS doesn’t know anything about Azure resource groups at this time. I suspect the lock only applies to the ARM REST API. Perhaps this suggestion should be copied over to Azure SQL Database; they could check for this lock on the server side and fail the TSQL query.

                          • Open source Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlParser.dll + Release as nuget package

It's not great to have to manually reference Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlParser.dll when we need to parse TSQL code.

Open sourcing and releasing as a nuget package would open up a number of very interesting scenario that would empower the sql server community.
For us, we want to pre-process our scripts with macros and also format consistently but I imagine there would be other cool scenarios such as linters and code analyzers.

                                • declare @VarName as [Schema].[Table].[Column]%Type

I would like to reuse a Variables type from a Columns Type. There would be no need to check the ColumnType anymore - and if a column is altered the Stored Proc should be recompiled.

                                  • Reduce rollback duration on SQL Server Transaction

Rollback and duration to rollback on a large transaction is a problem in SQL systems to maintain. There are cases the rollback duration is longer than the commit itself. Terminating long transactions (example index rebuild) in Always On environment is a nightmare. If customers failover the AG by mistake then the pending rollback creates additional problems. Compete products such as Oracle RDBMS have overcome this issue by adding a undo/redo/rollback segments. A similar solution needs to be added in SQL server too. Customers have openly expressed their unhappiness on this and compare SQL Server with Oracle frequently.

                                    A solution or…

                                    • SSAS Tabular - SSDT 2017 Get Data - multiple flat files (csv/txt) from a folder

There are manay examples of new using modern Get Data feature while connecting to SQL Server. However, I can't find any examples of importing data from multiple flat files (csv/txt) located in one folder. How should I make an initial connection to the data source? Whether it should be a connection to a folder or to one of the files? How should I buid the query chain (query M). It seems that the way I do it in Excel does not work. I would be gratefull for any tips.
In SSDT I did it as I used to do it…

                                      • The new query plan icons are hard to tell apart visually

SQL Server management studio 2017 just got new query plan icons.

                                        They are blurry.

Also, they look undifferentiated. This makes it harder to visually understand a query plan. It is harder than before to tell icons apart. This is because there are only two colors now (black and blue).

Also, they are simply not very pretty. They are worse than the old icons with no mitigating advantages.

Can you provide icons with high visual usability please? SSMS is being used by professionals whose productivity depends on their tools.
