SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server 2017 powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server 2017 brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. Merge Agent auto resume when downloading snapshot

When the merge agent is downloading a snapshot either compressed or not a communication error causes it to fail and it must start downloading all over again. International downloads to some countries can be trouble some and we have to use a more reliable download manager to get the cab file accross.

We’ve looked into this. Although we would like to improve the product this way we will not have the means to do it in a foreseeable future.
That said your feedback is very valuable to us, we keep track of the suggestion.

If you donot select a parameter "XYZ" in report and clicked on "View Report" button then the report will prompt as -
Please select a value for the parameter "XYZ" .
This error prompt should be editable to write in own words like-

  3. After an XML modify() operation, need a way to know if the operation succeeded or not.

After performing an insert/update/delete operation in an XML variable or column using the modify() method, there is no way to know if the operation succeded or not. There needs to be a way to know if any element/attribute is updated/deleted/inserted and the number of elements/attributes affected. Something like @@rowcount.

    Edited on 30 Aug 2008.
SQL Server does not raise an error if the modify operation fails (if it could not modify the value). So there is no easy way to identify where the update/insert/delete operation actually modified the value or not. We need a way to identify this.

Dear Jacob and people voting on this item.

Thanks for the request to report how many elements or nodes have been updated. How do you see the this work across multiple rows? Do you want it on a per average, per row, or the min and max values?

    Best regards
    Michael

    <=-=Sep 9 2008 8:27PM=-=>

I think if we can get a count of elements/attributes updated, that will be good enough to start with. If the update operation did not modify anything, it may return 0 and if it updates 2 elements it may return 2.

  4. Unable to access new instance of SQL as member of administrators

After installing 2008 I was unable to connect to the database using any protocol as a member of the administrators group.
I had to logoff and log back on as "Administrator" for the local machine and then add my domain account directly to SQL server as a Sysadmin.

Then I had too alter the windows firewall to allow even cmd line access to the local instance of the database.

In versions earlier than Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, members of the local administrator group do not need their own SQL Server logins and they do not need to be granted administrator privileges inside SQL Server. They connect to SQL Server as the built-in server principal BUILTIN\Administrators (B\A), and they have administrator privileges because B\A is a member of the sysadmin fixed server role.

In SQL Server 2008, the BuiltIn\Administrator login group is NOT provisioned by default during setup install. Instead during SQL Server 2008 setup install (on the account provisioning screen), users are required to provision one or more admin account into the sysadmin fixed server role to perform administrator actions on SQL Server.

Secondly BuiltIn\Administrator rights (by default) are stripped away in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 because of UAC feature, so box administrator users cannot connect to SQL

  5. Report Manager Communications should be compressable

While using the report manager with reports that have cascading parameters that is connected to an AS cube we get poor performance during the parameter selection process when connected over the internet OR a VPN connection. This does not occur when on the local network.

  6. Custom Report Item should support other types then only images

Allow create custom report item of other types like HTML and with this we could create custom report item that create flash chart or silverlight charts, it will give much more power to Report Services.

Others BI tools like MicroStrategy and Business Objects have this out of the box (flash charts).

And why do not allow to create custom items of other types?

    Hello,

Thanks for writing in about this feature request. We will evaluate this for a future version of SQL Server. If we have information to give you regarding the status of this bug, we’ll do so via MS Connect.

I’m keeping this active, but marking it to be re-evaluated as we begin our next round of planning.

  7. Ability to handle temporal data / columns within the engine core

Enterprise Data Warehouses require "start / end" or "load/load-end" dates to house data over time.

What I would like is the ability to issue a select statement as follows:

    Select <most recent data>
    from the EDW.TABLE
    where
data is current AS OF <my date>

In other words, a whole host of "temporal based" functionality where SQL is capable of recognizing "layers" of data for a specific point in time.

    Thanks,
    Dan Linstedt

    Dear Dan

Thanks for your feedback and suggestion. Are you specifically interested in the so-called transaction time (where the timestamp is immutably given at the time the data is inserted) or the so-called valid time (a user-specified timestamp indicating the validity of the data) or both?

We are looking into a variety of interesting solutions in this space and your feedback, including your rating would be valuable input.

    Thanks

  9. Column widths and editing data for DB views in Management Studio

The biggest issue for me is entering and editing data in a SQL Server or Express edition database without having to develop a .NET application. Using views in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) are a good choice for this task and work OK once I figured out that I had to use "TOP (N)" and not "TOP (100) Percent" to be able to edit data in a sorted view. I am also using INSTEAD OF triggers to "flatten data" from multiple tables. What I find really annoying is that the field column widths can be saved for the results pane…

    Hi,

Thank you for filing the enhancement request to us. We understand that adjusting columns can sometimes be painful during repeated script executions and directly editing results can be a convenience. I have marked your bug as direct feature feedback for a future release of SQL Server.

    Hi,

We took a look at this bug along with several others recently. Unfortunately, triaging it against other critical bugs, I do not think we would get to investigating this in the near future. However, we have taken note of this internally, and when we revisit this functionality in the future, we will try and get this resolved.

Thanks for writing in to Microsoft.

  11. SQLAgent Job Notifications

SQL Server just keeps getting better, by the way, so thanks. DMVs rock! But (!) could you please change SQLAgent job notifications to be more specific about the result than just Succeeded or Failed? When you look at the job history the icons tell you whether all steps succeeded or only some. I'd love to see something in the notification email that would prompt me to check the results in detail.

For example, I have a job to do my backups with a step for each database. Each step goes on to the next step even if it fails because…

I agree, that would be very helpful. In the interim, I run this query to monitor jobs. This query can easily be customized to retrieve specific job and instance info….so you could tie it in as the last step of a job and email the results.

    select name,server,step_name,message,run_date,run_time,run_duration from sysjobs j
    inner join msdb.dbo.sysjobhistory h on j.job_id = h.job_id
    where run_status = 0

When I get to the "Register SQL Server components" screen in the latest version of BPA (9.0.1004.0), and I select "Database Engine", I have a dropdown for SQL Server instance name. However, this dropdown is empty, which is inconsistent with several other tools (e.g. Profiler, Mangement Studio) which offer a list of recently-connected instances and/or local instances.

  16. Allow finer grain of control for database level permissions

There are a number of database level command that can be executed but only if you are a db_owner. These permissions are implicit and cannot be explicitly granted or denies, unlike other database level permissions such as "backup database".

This can cause several security issues. For example, if you have someone who uses DTS or SSIS for the data warehouse which is updatable and usually in full recovery mode, you would like to permit this person to be able to switch between bulk recovery and back to full recovery. Unfortunately the only way to allow this is to grant full…

  17. Add flag to CREATE DATABASE command which specifies if data file should be zeroed out on create or on the fly.

I think that an excellent addition to Microsoft SQL Server would be the ability for the CREATE DATABASE command to be able to specify if the physical files should be zeroed out at creation (aka SQL 2000 style) or on the fly (aka SQL 2005 style).

    Thanks for your suggestion.
We are looking at more explicit methods for controlling file initialization.
Likely this will take the form of an instance switch, since it impacts more than database creation (restore, grow, add file). The switch would be dynamic however.

    <=-=Dec 13 2007 6:03PM=-=>

An instance level switch would be perfect.

Thank you for looking into adding this into SQL Server.

    <=-=Dec 13 2007 6:08PM=-=>

I was thinking with a create database flag so that you could have different databases setup to work different ways. Also I would assume that this way it wouldn’t to change able. (I would assume that you wouldn’t want to allow this to be changeable after database creation.) With a database instance I would assume that the setting would in some way be changeable which you probably wouldn’t want to be able to happen.

  18. Dynamic Sub-Report

    Hi,

I have been waiting for this option for several time now. Till today i am currently overlapping (causes warnings) sub-reports and setting proper visible settings to each one along the settings choosen.
If we could load this sub-report dynamically we would definitly get an improvement in report building and possibilities.

    Best Regards,
    Luis Simes

End users would sometimes like to email a report (or filtered report) to others within the organization that may or may not have access to Reporting Services. 20. Role Playing dimension - change level name

In order to use the dimensions role playing functionality, it should be possible to change the name of the attribute/hierarchy levels.
E.g., you use 2 time dimension using role playing, it is not possible (at least to my knowledge) to change the name of the attribute/hierarchy levels. The first dimension is related to orders time and the second to delivered time, the end-users would like to be able to figure out if the month is related to the order or the delivery.

This is the singlemost frustrating aspect of SSAS for us.
It effectively means that every role playing dimension that is required to have its own uique name needs to be created as a real cube dimension with the consequent impact on development time, storage space and processing time.
