SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server 2017 powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server 2017 brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. Reporting Services WMI Provider Code Error

    While continuing to work on the latest version of my WiredNav control using VS 2005 Beta 2 and SQL Server 2005, I found an "unchanged" method that now causes an exception. The method is based on the example WMI Provider code for the MSReportServer_ConfigurationSetting Class. My method and the example work fine with VS.NET 2003/SQL Server 2000/Reporting Services 8.0.743.00 but when I use VS.NET 2005/SQL Server 2005/Reporting Services 9.00.1116, I get a ManagementException: Invalid namespace.

    Does this have something to do with the path of the RSReportServer configuration file?
    For VS.NET 2003, the RSReportServer configuration file (rsreportserver.config) is located in…

    Unfortunately, we had to move the namespace. The correct namespace is now: \root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ReportServer\v9.

    <=-=Oct 25 2005 6:14PM=-=>

    I ran the test again using the example under the MSReportServer_ConfigurationSetting Class at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms154648, which has the new namespace location \root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ReportServer\v9, and I still get the Invalid Namespace exception. How does the “\root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ReportServer\v9” work? Can I create an instance of the MSReportServer_ConfigurationSetting Class directly using the namespace?

    <=-=Oct 27 2005 10:46AM=-=>

    I got the example under the MSReportServer_ConfigurationSetting Class at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms154648 to working using namespace \root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ReportingServices\v9 not \root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ReportServer\v9. However, this only works with the Management Path of MSReportServer_Instance used in the example. It does not work for MSReportServer_ConfigurationSetting or MSReportManager_ConfigurationSetting. I get an object Not Found exception. This means that the old VS 2003 example for the MSReportServer_ConfigurationSetting Class does not work even after changing to the new namespace. Something is not right here.

  6. Severe performance degradation accessing AS2K cubes with ANONYMOUS USER and Yukon OLAP provider

    When our product, ProClarity 6.1, accesses AS2K cubes using ANONYMOUS USER access and the Yukon OLAP provider, creating a connection takes approximately 15 minutes. If I use the AS2K OLAP provider instead, connection takes less than 5 seconds. During the establishment of the connection, our product identifies a collection of unique member names that it can use as query scoped members in an MDX query. To do this we construct a potention member unique name. We then perform a MDSCHEMA_MEMBERS lookup with a restriction set to our potential name. The purpose of the lookup is to confirm that the member…

    Unfortunately, there is no a setting, like you expected, to direct the parsing of flat files to first break rows and then columns.

    The flat file parsing for SSSIS in SQL Server 2005 works on column by column basis, for performance reasons.

    That is something we already had users ask for after the release, and it should definitely be available in the next version of the product. In the meantime people usually use the script component to do this type of parsing there are a few good posts about it on the SSIS MSDN forum.

    Thanks.

    <=-=Dec 8 2006 12:14PM=-=>

    Unfortunately, as I said before, there is no a switch to allow this functionality at this time.

    Yeah, this was when using Visual SourceSafe (v6.0 I think) as our source control system. How did you try and reproduce it? For me it was simply a case of right-clicking on a checked-in package and selecting ‘Execute’.

    The project has since migrated to using Team Foundation Server but I’m not sure if the problem occurs there or not. I’ve left the project now so can’t check!

    Also, Microsoft Connect doesn’t show the attachment so I can’t see what teh original error message was.

    Hi Julie,
    Thank you for your bug report regarding adding stored procedure. I have several questions:
    1. Can you attach the error report that you got?
    2. When you say in step 1 of the report, Create a new query, did you do a CREATE PROCEDURE statement inside of the Query Editor, or did you start from the “New Stored Procedure” command of the Stored Procedure node in Object Explorer
    3. Did you actually Execute the query to save the stored procedure, or did you just Save the query file.
    Thank you,

    I have determined that the problem dealt with a limitation of the SQL Query Editor. The editor will only display a maximum of 8192 characters in text mode. I used BCP to get my object script out of the database in its entirety.

    <=-=Jan 10 2006 12:28PM=-=>

    We do have the limitation of 8k for text results, and 64k for grid results. But the users can work around this by editing the trigger from the context menu and the trigger text will get displayed in a query window.

    Hi Micahfox ,

    In general, sp_detach_db and sp_attach_db is NOT recommended way to move a system database.

    Our test team validated this scenario by using the recommended way to move database (see topic Moving Database Files in BOL) and it works fine.

    There was no problem with sp_add_alert once msdb was moved.

    The steps followed 1. determine the logical name of the database and current location of physical files

    SELECT name AS [logical name], physical_name AS [location]

    FROM sys.master_files

    WHERE database_id = DB_ID(‘msdb’)

    2. change the location of each file from the step 1

    ALTER DATABASE msdb

    GO

    ALTER DATABASE msdb

    MODIFY FILE (NAME = MSDBData, FILENAME = ‘C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\msdbdata.mdf’);
