SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server 2017 powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server 2017 brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. Report designer hangs on preview tab with Delay Notification window

When attempting to preview a RDL file in the Visual Studio 2005 Report Designer for SQL Server 2005 Beta 2, the IDE hangs with a "Delay Notication" box appearing. The box goes away and reappears without any resolution. Terminating the devenv.exe process is the only solution.

To clarify the above statement: a connection without a DSN does not work, creating a DSN will work, and then once the DSN is deleted new connections continue to work even after client re-boots.

    Hello Paul.

Thank you a lot for reporting the problem to us.

Unfortunately it is too late for the current release of Analysis Services to take any action on this matter.
We are going to take a look at this in the next release.

    Thanks.

    Lachender.

Thank you for reporting this problem to us.
Unfortunately it is very hard to say just based on the information in this case on what is happening with the SQL Management studio. Or whether the problem is with Analysis Services.
To troubleshot some more we suggest you try and run SQL Server Profiler against Analysis Server.
See if you get any server errors as responce to your query.

    The Analysis Services Team.

    Hi Josh,
We understand the problem and how to fix this. We are looking to include this in the first CU for 2008.
    Thank you,

Hi Josh – The issue is fixed in CU2 – I have download instructions in my latest blog at: http://blogs.msdn.com/billramo/archive/2009/01/02/case-of-the-missing-database-name-in-activity-monitor.aspx

  7. SSMS: Single column results to text: Regression and nvarchar/varchar inconsistency

SSMS inconsistently space-pads string results for single-column result sets. Varchar-type results are padded to the column alias or maximum display length, but with a minimum width of 4. Nvarchar-type results, on the other hand, are not padded. This is both an inconsistency and a change in behavior from previous versions.

Because of this behavior, it is impossible to produce in the results pane (for cut and paste where needed elsewhere, for example) the exact result of executing one or more single-column string-type selects. Saving results to a file retains the spurious padding.

    Steve,

The issue is understood in the use scenario. It could be a regression introduced from a fix for right-to-left scripting languages. In column aligned mode, it is by-design but other modes such as comma, tab and space separated modes, it should preserve the original behavior. I will escalate it to the product team.

    <=-=Jun 30 2008 11:21AM=-=>

The described behavior happens when you are doing Results to Grid.

I just tried the same query with Results to Text and found different behavior

Query returns some number of rows (can’t tell how many because the “rows” indicator at the bottom of the results pane remains at 0
and then returns with an error that says “could not replace text”

Results to file produces: (104831923 row(s) affected) and no errors

  10. Role Security at different levels of hierarchy

I have two roles that specify dimension security at two different levels of the same hierarchy. Visual Totals are specified on both roles. Each role works fine individually, but when a user is assigned to both roles, the visual totals don't work as expected. You see the grand total at the parent level.

    BIHunter.

    Thanks for reporting the problme.
The issue looks to be by design (though could look like not immideately intuitive ):

If at least one role has visual totals disabled, then the user will see real totals even if other role enable visual totals (this is also for compatibility with Shiloh).

In this particular case, the per-attribute visual totals settings are:

    Role1 Role2

    State Yes No
    City No Yes

So no visual totals get applied on any attribute.
We believe the solution is to enable visual totals for both State and City in both roles.

    Hope this helps.

  11. CREATE GLOBAL CUBE does not support cascading many-to-many dimension relationships

The CREATE GLOBAL CUBE statement does not support cascading many-to-many dimension relationships. It gives an error even if all measures and all dimensions are included. A single many-to-many dimension relationship is supported, but if more m2m relationships are chained together, the CREATE GLOBAL CUBE doesn't work.

  12. ClosingPeriod Function in Analysis services does not utilise partiton pruning

I have an Inventory cube with a time hierarchy where the days roll into weeks and weeks into months and months into years.
I have a base measure for inventory.
the cube is partitoned by week
When I select weeks 1-4 (which make up month 1) and select month 1 simulataneously and look at the trace in profiler, 4 partitons are accesed.

  14. sp_helptext output loosing format of the code when displayed in grid...

To get and edit a stored procedure source code I use the sp_helptext which sends the output to result pane. If the result pane is in text mode the code that is printed is retaining the the original format with tabs and spaces etc.

But when the results pan is in grid mode (CTRL+D) and if I do select all rows and copy and paste the code into a new code window the code is loosing it's format. All the tabs are getting converted into a space.

Thanks for sending us your feedback.

We investigated this issue and its behaving this way by design. When customers upgrade from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 RC0, the upgrade process does not remove SQL Server 2005 tools.

Have you tried using DTExec.exe from this folder PROGRAMFILES\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\? It should work. If it doesn’t please let us know.

The workaround would be to set the “PATH” environment variable to include SQL Server 2008 binn path (i.e. PROGRAMFILES\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\) before the SQL Server 2005 binn path (i.e. PROGRAMFILES\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\) so that the right toolset gets used.

    Thanks,
    Ritu

I have attempted to repro the problem both with SQL 2005 and 2008 RC0 and cannot. Both on WS08 64-bit and WS03 32-bit. Here is what I’ve attempted to do. See the attached scripts. Basically these scripts process an existing partition — and then while processing is on-going I stop the msmdsrv process using the OS Services applet. In all cases, ascmd detected an error and set the error level in the returned status. I’ve attached both the scripts and the results.

Hello -thanks for reporting. We’ve filed this as defect request and I go the following information from the Developer:

This bug comes as a results of the size of the model. It takes time to load the cube metadata in memory. Meanwhile SSMS times out – if you use the Windows service control to start/restart the service you won’t see this issue.

    Thanks for reporting!
