SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. The query processor ran out of internal resources and could not produce a query plan with WHERE in and several thousand values

The query processor ran out of internal resources and could not produce a query plan. This is a rare event and only expected for extremely complex queries or queries that reference a very large number of tables or partitions. Please simplify the query. If you believe you have received this message in error, contact Customer Support Services for more information. (SQL-42000)

SELECT DISTINCT value FROM sometable WHERE id IN (several thousands of values)

    Hardly complex.
    For SQL 2005 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/946020

However this does not appear to be fixed for SQL 2008

A workaround is to build a C# CLR Tabular function…

Thank-you for taking the time to post this issue. Whilst we will not make a change to SQL 2008 to increase the limit of elements in an IN list, we are working to improve such limits generally in a future release. Please be aware however that with such queries, better performance is likely to be achieved by inserting the constant values into a temp table and performing a join with the underlying permanent table.

Inserting into a temp table is impractical when dynamically generating statements based on previously queried results sets where the WHERE data used orginally can not longer be used, such as after an UPDATE. Or when the process is the result of a dynamic process in a external application. In the case where I ran across this a the values being…

    Hi Peter,

Good catch. This bug is now assigned over to the Dev for further investigation and fix.

    Hi Peter,

We investigated this particluar issue and the fix for this will be part of our future releases. There is a similar bug that we are tracking for this issue – http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/379631/ssms-partition-functions-with-datetimeoffset-cause-error-crash . Given this, I am going to resolve your issue as duplicate of the other issue.

Thanks for catching this issue and reporting to us.

Dave, in our initial attempts we were unable to repro this in house. We are going to continue investigating. To help us, could you please check the versions of these binaries: programFiles\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ msmdgsrv.dll and programFiles\System\Ole DB\msmdlocal.dll.?

    <=-=Mar 24 2006 12:44PM=-=>

We have been unable to reproduce this in house. Without such repro, I’m afraid we cannot investigate the issue any further. More information might help us, such as the version of the binaries mentioned before, how much RAM you have, a history of SQL installations on this machine, whether you made changes to the AdventureWorks DW sample, etc. Thank you for your help!

  7. Severe performance degradation accessing AS2K cubes with ANONYMOUS USER and Yukon OLAP provider

When our product, ProClarity 6.1, accesses AS2K cubes using ANONYMOUS USER access and the Yukon OLAP provider, creating a connection takes approximately 15 minutes. If I use the AS2K OLAP provider instead, connection takes less than 5 seconds. During the establishment of the connection, our product identifies a collection of unique member names that it can use as query scoped members in an MDX query. To do this we construct a potention member unique name. We then perform a MDSCHEMA_MEMBERS lookup with a restriction set to our potential name. The purpose of the lookup is to confirm that the member…

    Lachender.

Thank you for reporting this problem to us.
Unfortunately it is very hard to say just based on the information in this case on what is happening with the SQL Management studio. Or whether the problem is with Analysis Services.
To troubleshot some more we suggest you try and run SQL Server Profiler against Analysis Server.
See if you get any server errors as responce to your query.

  13. SSMS: Single column results to text: Regression and nvarchar/varchar inconsistency

SSMS inconsistently space-pads string results for single-column result sets. Varchar-type results are padded to the column alias or maximum display length, but with a minimum width of 4. Nvarchar-type results, on the other hand, are not padded. This is both an inconsistency and a change in behavior from previous versions.

Because of this behavior, it is impossible to produce in the results pane (for cut and paste where needed elsewhere, for example) the exact result of executing one or more single-column string-type selects. Saving results to a file retains the spurious padding.

    Steve,

The issue is understood in the use scenario. It could be a regression introduced from a fix for right-to-left scripting languages. In column aligned mode, it is by-design but other modes such as comma, tab and space separated modes, it should preserve the original behavior. I will escalate it to the product team.

The described behavior happens when you are doing Results to Grid.

    BIHunter.

    Thanks for reporting the problme.
The issue looks to be by design (though could look like not immideately intuitive ):

If at least one role has visual totals disabled, then the user will see real totals even if other role enable visual totals (this is also for compatibility with Shiloh).

In this particular case, the per-attribute visual totals settings are:

    Role1 Role2

    State Yes No
    City No Yes

So no visual totals get applied on any attribute.
We believe the solution is to enable visual totals for both State and City in both roles.

    Hope this helps.

  20. sp_helptext output loosing format of the code when displayed in grid...

To get and edit a stored procedure source code I use the sp_helptext which sends the output to result pane. If the result pane is in text mode the code that is printed is retaining the the original format with tabs and spaces etc.

But when the results pan is in grid mode (CTRL+D) and if I do select all rows and copy and paste the code into a new code window the code is loosing it's format. All the tabs are getting converted into a space.
