SSMS 18.1 Crashes when Opening a Database Diagram
SSMS 18.1 crashes (and restarts) when opening a database diagram without any error message.
I have created several diagrams from scratch thinking it might have to do with old formatting, but this does not appear to be the case.
You can edit a diagram (adding dozens of tables) with no problem. It is the opening of the diagram that results in the crash.
Latest bits for SSMS and SQL Server 2017 installed today.

The fix for database diagrams was included in SSMS 18.6. For more information, please see https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2020/07/22/sql-server-management-studio-18-6-is-now-generally-available/.
Diagrams corrupted by previous versions of SSMS will open as a blank screen in SSMS 18.6+.

SSMS 18.8 has this same issue -- opening a DB Diagram crashes it.

In 18.7.1, a new diagram that I created (containing a large number of tables) continues to completely crash the app upon reopening the diagram. This may be a different issue, but it's alive and well.

Yep, this is very much a problem.
In fact, I just tried to downgrade back to 10.6. I still can't open Database Diagrams nor can I create one from scratch...
When I try to create a new one and save it. I get this error message.
ExecuteScalar requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is closed. (System.Data)

Well, I am sorry to say so, but however or whatever you did, with v18.7.1, you managed to reintroduce the issue entirely again. That's kind of frustrating as you may believe.
I uninstalled 18.7.1 and installed 18.6 - and it works flawless, updating to 18.7.1, it doesn't. Installing 18.7.1 on a blank installed 20H2 does not, 18.6 on the same machine afterwards, works flawless...
If you need more data/log/... let' me know.

Have same problem. Upgrade new 18.6 SSMS and a couple DGs open blank. (not all)

I was lucky enough to still be on 17.x until recently when I saw this issue had been fixed, so I moved to 18.6
Diagrams had been working very well in 18.6. However in my most recent edit I modified the contents of a text annotation in addition to making some table modifications. Since then that diagram...
a) Opens as just a blank page in ssms 18.6
b) Crashes ssms 17.9.1So the problem is *not* resolved and has actually corrupted data despite only using the version that apparently has this fixed. Not happy :(

With this thread continuing to get traffic, we ask that new bug reports are opened for additional issues in database diagrams. All feedback items are reviewed shortly after they are created and this allows us to more quickly pursue specific bugs.

I just Downloaded 18.6 and this issue is not fixed. Only half the issue was fixed - SSMS no longer crashes for me. However, much like most everyone else has said, I get a blank white screen.

I'm current on SSMS and my database diagrams are still hosed. I can create a new one with no problem, but I can't re-open it!
Does anyone know when this will be fixed .... seems like this has been going on forever with no help!!

My diagrams are sometimes broken (opening as a blank page) and it's mission critical for me. I've been using these for 20 years, and I've invested a great deal of effort in them. Please fix it immediately.
