SSMS 18.0 GA can't be installed
When I'm trying to install SSMS 18.0 GA, I get error: "SSMS can only be upgraded by installing the package of the matching language. Please, use the matching version of the installer, or uninstall the current version of SSMS and run SSMS setup again." And I'm not alone: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/16d0e279-6ff4-4d5f-ad0a-5039235f03b9/ssms-2018-setup-blocked?forum=sqltools
Excellent... Deleting the registry, uninstalling, restarting the server and installing again worked for me!!!!!
I tried to do as the instructions show, but my control panel doesn't show any sql or ssms. and I confused. where is this pre released version is hidden.
so could any one help, if you have experienced same problem and succeeded to solve it?

After some days fighting with this issue, dropping the specified directory and deleting the registry key was enough for me.
This worked for me thanks geat job :)
Couldn't install SSMS 18.3 - the issue is same as here (https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/88eac0f2-f97f-4e44-bb98-f8341dfe3bce/installing-ssms-18-wont-go-past-loading-packages-phase?forum=vssetup). Tried to install SSMS 18.2 (had a backup) - same issue. Deleting registry worked for me, if anyone has the same problem.
@Goutam Behera This option does exist, of course. Right-click on your database, then select Tasks -> Import Data.

I do not see the export/import option in SSMS 18.2. This option used to exist in SSMS 17.x. Is this feature stopped in SSMS 18.2?

Some clown at MS hard-coded the installation path to C:/Program Files (x86)/... If you choose another (e.g. under C:/Program Files/) the installation puts files both places. And it gives the error noted.
tried 18.2 after reg and folders cleanup and reboot, still the same "side-by-side configuration is incorrect" error when launching.
Running sxstrace shows Cannot resolve reference Automation,processorArchitecture="X86",type="win32",version="188.8.131.52" error with references to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 18\Common7\IDE\Automation.DLL file, etc.
as someone below, i could not find such directory or file in my PC.
Maybe, i can download it aside from somewhere?
Or, what should i do to make it work finally?

reg query “HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio” /reg:32 /s

SSMSInstallRoot REG_SZ C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 18\

Thanks to team. Getting same error in 18.2 but resolved with given steps.

In order to get the installation started I had to delete another registry key in addition to the one proposed:
“HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\SQL Server Management Studio”
(notice the difference: "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio" -> "SQL Server Management Studio")
Thanks to everyone that contributed
Deletion of registry worked for me as well, Thanks a lot!
i did all the suggested manipulations, got SSMS re-installed, but still when launching it, i get
"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."
Tried with the latest version.
Thanks, Matteo. This really helped my problem

I had SSMS 14, 17 and 18 preview installed. Uninstalled all of them, had the same error. It ended up being the registry entry which was left behind from 18 preview.

Deleting the registry entry worked for me ...

For me the I believe the root cause was an unexpected reboot as SSMS installed and had not completed.
With Linux SQL Container I am prone to Hyper-V stop error (blue screen) reboots as well.
It seams the install hadn't updated the registry before the reboot, maybe if this is an initial check the values could be added sooner, e.g. at point of check if missing only.
The only registry entries i can see in path you suggest to delete is
Not under the local user for 18.0 but entries for older 'sql specific' versions up to 14
I had reinstall OS in order to install it since I couldn't wait for such long time for the response. After reinstalling OS everything went fine. The thread can be closed.
For those receiving the "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." error post SSMS 18 reinstall.
The below steps are how I corrected this situation.
1.) Delete the “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 18” directory again
2.) Delete the registry key...again
Delete the mentioned registry key (e.g. by running from an elevated cmd prompt:
reg DELETE “HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio” /reg:32)
3.) Uninstall SSMS18 from "Add or Remove Programs"
4.) Restart computer
5.) Reinstall SSMS 18
Worked for me and hope this helps others.
