SSMS 2018 Database Diagrams - Display Only
I, among many others, was dismayed to find that Database Diagrams were discontinued in SSMS 18.
My organization's documentation processes are based on SSMS diagrams, which we have counted on since SQL Server 2000.
We do not use the diagrams for database design. We use them to support our team of developers by giving them a visual representation of what is in our databases. (I do database design brainstorming in an old copy of Visio 2010 installed on a VM. I can type column names in a DDL script as fast as I can type them into a GUI designer.)
Equally dismaying is that Microsoft has not provided or suggested a replacement.
I think Microsoft could really help out by providing a version of Database Diagrams that is "Display Only." That is, SSMS users can create diagrams that show what is in the database, but they cannot use the diagrams to change anything in the database (other than the diagram data stored in the dbo.sysdiagrams table).
I think this would provide a very helpful, stop-gap measure to help out while either:
• Microsoft re-implements Database Diagrams in some other Microsoft tool, and/or
• Third party vendors develop replacements.
