SSMS 17.3 not showing Live Query Statistics on SQL Server 2017 database

I've created a very horrible query to test some performance differences between SQL Server 2016 and SQL Server 2017. One of the options is RECOMPILE. So the query plan had to be created at the time of execution.

When i'm executing this query in SSMS 17.3 on my SQL 2016 database, within a few seconds the Lice Query Statistics pane fills up with all sorts of objects that make up the query. I can see data flowing and all is well (though slow but that was the purpose of the query).

Whem i'm executing this query in SSMS 17.3 on my SQL 2017 RTM (not CTP but it's the highest database release i could select) database, the Live Query Statistics pane shows, but it keeps saying "Waiting for query plan'. I would have expected that the query plan :)

Server is running on a VMware ESX host.
