SQL Query Editor Extension Mapping
When I map a the .prc extension to the SQL Query Editor, it is not recognized with a File | Open. However, it is recognized when I drag the .prc file into the editor.

Thanks for reporting the bug. I was able to repro this but only in a very specific way. After I setup the prc extension I opened the file and it did not recognize it as a SQL file. I then restarted SSMS. When I open the file from the recent files list it doesn’t recognize it as a SQL file. However, if I open it using File-Open it does recognize it. It appears that SSMS/VS is caching some information about the file when it’s opened from Recent files. This isn’t something we’ll be able to address in SQL Server 2008. We’ll keep this on the books and review it again when we start the next release.

This is regarding connect item 356527. We are no longer able to reproduce this issue in latest version of SQL Server (Denali) and hence closing this issue as not reproducible. However if you are able to see the same issue in Denali please let us know (kindly add details/ examples).
I'm having this (or a very similar) issue in SQL Management Studio 17.9.1. In my instance I have multiple custom file types associated to "SQL Query Editor", in particular for example .VIW. After reboot on initial start, management studio won't properly open .VIW files as SQL query edtor files. In order to have them open properly you have to remove the .VIW association and re-add it. After doing this, File->Open correctly opens and recognizes .VIW files as SQL Query editor files. This happens repeatably on my current installation/setup: https://i.vgy.me/anjGW5.png The same thing happens for any other custom association I have.
