SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server 2017 powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server 2017 brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. Please create a redistributable command-line equivalent for SSMS -> Extended Events -> Export

We've created a .NET C# based export for XEL to CSV using QueryableXEventData but it takes 4 minutes to export a 1GB file. In SSMS, clicking Extended Events -> Export -> CSV takes 45 seconds for the same file.

Unfortunately, interative SSMS is required, so the process cannot be automated. Please create a command-line executable so we can automate the export at the delicious speeds of SSMS.

Also, if the NULL can be removed from output in both SSMS and the command line tool, that would be far better.

    • Replace the import wizard with Power Query

Instead of using the outdated import wizard (not the new one that was released recently in SSMS), a new one should be created that leverages the Power Query engine (aka the M language) to import data into SQL Server.

      • Use column aliases directly in SELECT clause

It would be nice if queries like this were possible:

        SELECT
        A AS B
        ,C AS D
        ,D-B AS E
        FROM table

In other words, use column directly in the SELECT clause where they are defined. Other database vendors have implemented this, so I assume it's not rocket science.

Right now, we have to use subqueries just to define an extra calculation.

        • T-SQL Common Table Expression "Materialize" Option

T-SQL Common Table Expression "Materialize" Option

I have run into a couple performance and results issues using Common Table Expressions (CTEs).

The first case is where I coded a data retrieval as a single, large query with a CTE that is referenced multiple times in the query. The CTE has an expensive query. I was able to determine, via execution plans, etc., that the results of the CTE were being recalculated multiple times, resulting in slow execution. I rewrote the data retrieval as multiple steps where the query of the CTE was first executed into a table variable, and I…

          • Add FOR CSV to facilitate CSV export

We have FOR XML and FOR JSON. But it is not uncommon that people want to produce CSV files. This can be done with BCP, but it is not straightforward not the least if you want to add headers. And if you only want fields to be quoted when needed, BCP is not really what you are looking for. SSIS is also an alternative, but SSIS does not always fit in.
Thus, it would be handy if there was a an option like FOR CSV, with a syntax like:
FOR CSV [, HEADERS] [,DELIMITER(',')] [, QUOTE('"')]

            HEADERS would mean that…

            • DIVIDE function in T-SQL

The languages MDX and DAX both have a DIVIDE function, which has the following syntax:

              DIVIDE(<numerator>, <denominator> [,<alternateresult>])
The alternate result is specified as the result when a division by zero is encountered. If it isn't specified, NULL is returned.

This would be a fine addition to the T-SQL language.

              • SET STATISTICS IO should also show schema name for tables

When you use schemas in your database, and you have the same table names in multiple schemas, it is not clear, which schema the table belongs too in the output of the SET STATISTICS IO. E.g. a table called Profile, or configuration in different schema is very common at our databases

                Today the output is just
Table 'Profile'. Scan count 1, logical reads 123, physical reads 1, read-ahead reads 121, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0.
Table 'Profile'. Scan count 3, logical reads 13, physical reads 1, read-ahead reads 342, lob logical reads 0,…

                • Locate backups in azure container fails when Shared Access Signature contains sip parameter

                  1. I have a SAS created as here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/lesson-1-create-stored-access-policy-and-shared-access-signature, but i added ip restrictions (IpRange argument in GetSharedAccessSignature ), so that sas contains paramter sip=x.x.x.x-y.y.y.y
                  2. When I use this SAS in SSMS 17.4 to restore the backup, then in the "Locate Backup File In Microsoft Auzre" popup i cannot see any files. The reason is that SSMS issues invalid rest call, as it does not include the sip parameter, and that is the reason why the call is not authorized.

                  • Give us option to not have square brackets when drag&drop in SSMS

When we drag something from OE into a query window, then the identifier will always be enclosed in square brackets. Many of us do our due diligence and take care to use identifiers that do not require separators. These separators makes SQL code (a lot) harder to read, and we feel that we are punished with these square brackets. We don't want to do a search and replace all over and over again, when there could just be a setting in SSMS to not generate these.

                    • Remove the word "Initial" in SSMS, Object Explorer, Database Properties, Files.

Right-click a database, Properties, Files. There's a column named "Initial Size (MB". The word "Initial" should be removed. It is incorrect to have that word there. What we see here is the current size. This is particularly confusing for tempdb since people tend to think that what you see here is indeed the initial size (size at startup, from sys.master_files), which is *not* correct. Again, you see the current size!

                      • Vulnerability Assessment reports lists users created WITHOUT LOGIN

I ran CREATE USER lilleman WITHOUT LOGIN in an SQL 2016 database. I then ran Vulnerability Assessment in that database, and this users was listed as oprhaned and to be removed. That seems wrong to me. The report should only list users that are expected to be mapped to a login but that are not.

                        • Add CTRL+D duplicate line shortcut to SSMS Editor

Visual Studio has the ability to highlight a line and use the CTRL+D shortcut which quickly duplicates a line or block of code.
If SSMS had this it would save time for power users

                          • Keep system sessions from entering a single-user database

I am super hesitant to put a database into single_user mode without being in the database because system sessions (session_id <50) will get into the database and I cannot get the sessions out. I can't kill them because they are system sessions and the KILL command doesn't work.

This comes into play when I am in the database, set the database into single_user mode, get out of the database and have a slight delay and then try to do something with the database (such as backup the log with norecovery).

(Note - Despite the fact that I am not convinced this is a bug I am never-the-less putting this into the bugs section as none of the other sections seem at all appropriate.

                                Steps to Reproduce
                                1. Create a db - TestFlag692
                                2. Create a table within the db with the attached CreateTable.sql script.
                                3. Create an index on the table with the attached CreateIndex.sql script.
                                4. Run the app supplied in TableBloatExample.zip (Hit the Go button). What this does is…

                                • SSMS change connection to multiple servers

In SSMS, I can use the registered servers pane to open a new query window connected to multiple servers. Make it so that I can then right-click in that window, choose "connection / change connection," and then change my connection to a new group of servers, or at least choose multiple single servers. As it is now, "change connection" only lets you point at a single server.

                                      • provide lpad/rpad funtion

In 15 years of sql server development, was the lack of native lpad/rpad string funtions, one of the main pain. Please provide native left padding (lpad) and right padding (rpad) funtions.
Every main DBMS supports this function, except MS SQL Server.
I think this an easy subject that has to be changed.

                                        The follwolling DBMS supports rpad/lpad:
                                        - Oracle
                                        - Postgresql ()
                                        - MySQL
                                        - DB2
                                        - Informix

Thanks you for the idea. We will keep it into the backlog but we cannot guarantee when it would be implemented. We have already added several new string functions STRING_AGG, TRIM, TRANSLATE, and it would be good to add more. We are prioritizing functions that might be added so we cannot confirm when we will add this one.

                                        • Performance Dashboard / Expensive Queries / copy query text

When using the reports in the SSMS Performance Dashboard, you are unable to copy the query text from any of the "expensive queries" reports. Make it so you can either click to view the query in a new query window, or right-click the query to copy the text for pasting into a new window.
