SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.

  1. SSMS Data Model Designer (17.9, 18.1, 18.2) crashes SSMS

    Hi there,

I am designing a data model using SSMS. I've used all 3 versions mentioned above, and for reasons unknown to me, they all crash upon opening an existing model. I corrected the issue once by starting a new data model and deleting the old model, but that's very inconvenient, and loses any notations I made on the original diagram.

The data model designer was also crashing in 17.9 and 18.1 after removing an existing table and trying to add an existing table.

I've also noticed that I cannot re-add a renamed table without exiting SSMS and re-opening it.…

  2. SSMS 18.2 default language display bug

Hi, SSMS 18.2 displays the default language for all logins as Arabic, and my default language is us_english.

I'm using language 1033 so this shouldn't display as Arabic. I tried with a few servers - all the same. This is across all versions of the database engine from 2008, 2012, 2014, 2017 etc.

querying sys.server_principals shows this isn't actually the case so this seems to be display bug in SSMS 18.2

  3. SSMS 18.2 crash on Extended Events properties form

Opening a "New session…." (not the wizard) of extended events (or a previously existing one) and browsing the pages (Events, Data Storage, Advanced) hangs the windows and/or directly crashes/terminates SSMS with no error message, specially on the Events page.

Application logs shows the crash as an unhandled exception:

  5. SSMS Import Flat File fails to import all data

In SQL Server Management Studio 18.0 and 18.1, the following sample file defaults to INT NULL for the data type of the ID field and imports NULL for ID = 'abc'. This happens even if the data type of the field is set to NVARCHAR(50) NULL in the Modify Columns step. In this case the data type for ID in the created table is as requested, not INT NULL. If the data type is set to NVARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, it will generate an error (column 'Id' does not allow DBNULL). The expected behavior is to import all ID values as…

  6. Serious Issue: After Closing, SQL Will Not Open Without Reinstalling Entire Program

I have already tried working with Microsoft Support four separate times on this but nothing thus far has provided anything beyond a temporary fix. I can open SQL once I install the program, but once I close it I need to reinstall the program to open it again. I have been having issues with another unrelated program since April but have been using SQL since late May, so I have no idea if the two problems are related (I suspect they are).

  7. SSMS 18.1 SQL Agent Job Step lost focus

SSMS 18.1 SQL Agent Job Steps

When deleting a job step, in previous versions of SSMS, the focus would remain at the place of deletion. eg. delete step 18, the step would be removed, then all steps move up and the new step 18 would be in focus. In SSMS 18 & 18.1 the focus returns to step 1 after deletion is time consuming when modifying jobs with large number of steps.

  10. Migrating data from say 2017 SQL Web edition to SQL Standard. Any limitations?

For one of our projects we were hoping to use the 2017 MS SQL web edition for pre-production(DEV, UAT, QA etc) and post-QA testing migrate the data, stored procedures/scripts to STD edition in production. Involves one big push initially and then with every release smaller data being pushed. Are there any limitations or compatibility issues we can run into?

  11. SSMS 18.1 Crashes when Opening a Database Diagram

SSMS 18.1 crashes (and restarts) when opening a database diagram without any error message.

I have created several diagrams from scratch thinking it might have to do with old formatting, but this does not appear to be the case.

You can edit a diagram (adding dozens of tables) with no problem. It is the opening of the diagram that results in the crash.

Latest bits for SSMS and SQL Server 2017 installed today.

    SQL Server Management Studio 15.0.18131.0
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 15.0.1347.0
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 10.0.18362.1

  13. Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Deployment.exe not in ssms 2018

It appears that the deployment utility for SSAS is not included in the latest release of SSMS 18. Are there plans to include it or is this being ported over to ssdt?

It happnes on every SQL engine I connect to, regardless the engine's version.
It didn't happen on SSMS 17.9.

My desktop is Windows 10 Enterprise 64bit.

  15. SSMS 18.1 still missing status bar colors

I posted this bug in the early betas and requested it again to be fixed after GA release but in 18.1 there is still no change.

The query status bar in SSMS 17 and older has been khaki for single server connections and pink for group connections. There is no color for either type in SSMS 18 and going into options and setting it to khaki and pink values is not retained after closing the app. This is very important indicator as a quick confirmation that I'm not in a milti-server query window before executing.

    Tools -> Options -> Text…

  17. SSMS Flat File Import is not working for SSMS 18.1 upgrade

When upgrading SSMS 18.0 to 18.1, the Flat File Import is no longer importing csv, tab delimited or other delimited files.

    Procedure:

    1. Open SSMS 18.1, select any database to import to.
    2. Right click | Task | Import Flat File
    3. When presented by the file browse of the Wizard, navigate to where the attached (test_csv.txt) and load
    4. The attached (flatfileimport_error.png) appears.

note: This looks to be happening in my machine, as a fresh install SSMS 18.1 instead of an update on a different machine works.

    Attached:
    flatfileimporterror.png - screenshot of error
    test
    csv.txt - sample csv…

  18. cannot start 18 manager

MS SQL Server Management Studio Release 18.0 can only start once after installation. The next time you start, you only see the logo for a very short time and nothing happens anymore.
The program must first be uninstalled. After a new installation, it starts again only once.
I'll test the SSMS version 17.9 next week
It's a new Windows Server 2019 with SQL Server 2017.

  20. SSMS 18.1

SSMS 18.1 has a bug in restoring databases from UNC folders

    Repro:
    - Object Exploere right click restore database
    - Source: Chose Device and Press ...
    - Press Add
    - Enter a UNC path into the field Backup File Location and press Enter

In the older versions (17.x and older) the dialog showed the content of the UNC folder. Now nothing happen.
