SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. Unable to deploy SSIS packages from Visual Studio 2017 (15.8.0)

The latest version of Visual Studio 2017 (15.8.0) appears to have introduced a bug preventing deployment of SSIS project files.

When attempting to connect to a server the deployment wizard returns the following error:

  2. Add SSMS Option to show NULL value Differently than 'NULL' text

It would be nice if SSMS could be used to help distinguish between NULL values and the 'NULL' string value. Perhaps show NULL in grey? Just spent 6.5 hours troubleshooting what turned out to be a string 'NULL' inserted by someone rather than NULL, and if it had been clear on the initial query results grid, I'd have found that much more quickly.

  3. SSMS not putting the domain name for Availability Group Failovers

We have AGs in a different domain than our AD. When we try to failover with the wizard it tries to connect as our AD user but without the domain name attached to the server so it fails because serverName.ADdomain.net doesn't exist but serverName.hosteddomain.net does. We found a workaround of clicking options, login tab, then SSMS will display the server name with the correct domain.

With that said, today while implementing the workaround the serverName was wrong. It showed our QA environment instead of the Prod environment.

  4. SSRS 2016 to be logged in using SAML 2.0 based authentication.

Hi Team, I came across a requirement where my client wants SSRS 2016 to be logged in using SAML 2.0 based authentication. Client's existing applications are already running on SSO SAML 2.0 based authentication & he doesn't want to logon separately into SSRS either by Windows or Forms Authentication. What he wants is user should get Authenticated as per eixsting SSO SAML based authentication in SSRS as well. I tried various approaches but none worked. Can you shed some light on this?

    Regards,
    Sameer

  5. Columnstore REORGANIZE command increases modification_counter on table statistics

Reorganizing a columnstore index can, in some cases, cause the modificationcounter on the table's statistics to increase. This is unexpected because while the underlying structure of the table is being changed, the data itself isn't being modified. This can lead to issues where SQL is automatically updating statistics the next time a query is executed against the table in cases where the modificationcounter increases a significant amount because of the REORGANIZE. This has been particularly problematic for our large fact table with 150+ billion rows and full scan statistics across 40+ columns.

Attached is a reproduction script with…

  6. SSMS refresh statistics name on key rename

Using SSMS object explorer to rename a key (clustered primary key). The corresponding index name refreshes but the statistics name does not. Highlighting the Statistics folder and clicking refresh shows the new name. SSMS 14.0.17277.0

  7. Duplicate fact tables in SSAS Cube Data Source View

I found out that duplicate fact table is always created after you add a new measure from the same fact table in the cube data source view. So many measures you add from the same table so many duplicate tables you will get. After you save and close cube designer the images of duplicate tables changes into blank frames with the same fact table name. There is no way how to get rid of these duplicate tables. When you need to move table or arrange the design you will see the duplicates hidden under the original fact table. Such a…

  8. SSRS - Bullets and Number Lists in HTML

SSRS text fields formatted as HTML which contain an <ol> or <ul> tag get list numbers or bulets (respectively) which do not have the font size specified in the text box properties. For example, a numbered list with a text box font size of 8pt gets numbers with a font size of 10pt. A bulleted list gets a symbol font with a font size of 10pt. This modified the line height and modifies the list spacing from the default line height as well.

  9. SSMS CPU and memory load

While writing a new stored procedure the Management Studio stops responding and hogs CPU and memory. The memory load goes from a stable 140MB to ~2900MB and Windows tells me the program is not responding. After a couple of minutes the problem disappears and I am able to continue work again. The memory is back at ~140MB again.

I have updated SSMS to the latest version (17.8.1) but the problems remains. I do not know how to reproduce the problem. It seems to be randomly while writing code.

  10. SSAS Tabular: KEEPFILTERS not applied to CALCULATE when argument to KEEPFILTERS is FILTER

Consider a tabular model with a single table called 'Table', and columns 'Column1' and 'Column2' containing the following values:

    evaluate 'Table' ->
    Table[Column1]|Table[Column2]
    1 |A
    2 |A
    3 |A
    4 |B
    5 |B
    6 |C
    7 |C
    8 |C
    9 |C
    10 |C
    11 |C
    12 |D
    13 |D
    14 |D
    15 |D

Now attempt to count rows grouped by 'Column2', using the following DAX query:

    DEFINE MEASURE 'Table'[Example Measure] =
    (
    CALCULATE(

    DISTINCTCOUNT(&#39;Table&#39;[Column1]),

    KEEPFILTERS(FILTER(ALL(&#39;Table&#39;), TRUE())) //VERSION A: Doesn&#39;t work. Result is 15 for all &#39;Column2&#39; values
    //KEEPFILTERS(ALL(&#39;Table&#39;)) //VERSION B: Works as expected, counts rows for each value of &#39;Column2&#39;

  13. SSMS Data classification

Can the SSMS Data Classification feature be enhanced t o support the Australian Government security classification system protective markings? Or allow customisation of the list of values available in the sensitivity?

Can the classification option be added to database level also? This might help people implement ASD Controls 0393.

  15. SSMS Pinned tabs persisted

When a tab is pinned, it would be useful if it could be 'locked' so when a new session is started those pinned tabs are still pinned

  16. sql 2017 reporting services self migrate from previous versions

Update reporting services standalone installer to self migrate from earlier versions of reporting services. The process is currently a real pain as it takes a lot of extra work to move to the latest SQL reporting services when the previous versions just upgraded it in place.

  17. Excel Services in PowerBI Report Server should support refresh of Excel via more datasources and .odc files

Given the decomm of SSRS Integrated Mode in SP 2017, a lot of users are migrating to PowerBI Report Server on-prem. This has a much inferior Excel Services to Sharepoint and can't refresh many data sources in excel files. Also, support for .odc files is poor and users cannot store .odc files in a library on the report server, access by a REST URL to the .odc. Refresh also doesn't work via .odc which are stored on Sharepoint or Windows share for Excel stored on PBIRS. This is quite important as it prevents applications migrating to PBIRS from Sharepoint.

  18. SSIS/SSAS/SSRS Linux - SQL server runs on Linux, we wish the other services to follow...

MS said it's on the road-map, yet I read in other MS resource that if customers will vote for it, higher chances it will be done. so... SS*S to run on Linux is our desire. lower the costs, enables us to consider Linux/Docker/K8 containers approach rather than the existing expensive setup...

  20. Run DBCC CHECKDB WITH PHYSICAL_ONLY automatically in the background

When RAID controllers are idle, they automatically check the storage to make sure it's still okay. Why not SQL Server too?

Some of the pieces are there – for example, SQL Server already has the ability to watch for idle CPU times and run Agent jobs when it’s bored. For starters, that’d probably be good enough to save a lot of small businesses from heartache. For the databases over, say, 100GB, it’d be really awesome to have resumable physical_only corruption checking – tracking which pages have been checked (just like how the differential bitmap tracks page changes), with page activity…
