SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server 2017 powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server 2017 brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.

This was completed in SSMS 18.1.

Caveat: there is still a known issue where diagrams created from SSMS on machine A opened with SSMS running on machine B would cause SSMS to crash.

This has been reported already and it is being investigated (it is just not as simple as I would like to be).

    Thanks,
    -Matteo

  2. SSMS2018 - Installed, but will not run

Original post is here, with additional customer failure report: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/76236e43-dc82-4586-bf7f-b01ff6374462/ssms2018-installed-but-will-not-run?forum=sqltools

Windows 2016 Standard Edition. Brand new Hyper-V image. No prior SSMS on the server. Freshly installed SQL 2014, 16, and 17, Standard and Enterprise as 6 named instances. Restarted multiple times. Repaired the SSMS install. Restarted. I chose to install in a named folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\SSMS18 ..\Common7\ Size on disk: (1,090,367,488 bytes)

All that shows is the splash screen, then nothing. Run as administrator - I am a Local Admin - nothing.

    Event Viewer - Nothing.

Uninstalled. Reboot. Reinstalled to default location.

WORKS FOR ME, but NOBODY ELSE on…

  4. SSMS 18 fails to install when log path contains spaces

When executing SSMS-Setup-ENU.exe with the /Log argument that points to a directory path that contains spaces, the install fails.

This appears to be because the quoted log path is not passed correctly to VSTS_setup.exe.

Compare the two extracts from install log files. The first fails, whereas the second succeeds.

  5. SSMS 18.0 refuses to start

SSMS 18.0 refuses to start after one or two days when it's installed. I have to uninstall and install it again. The day it is installed it starts fine. But on the next day the splash screen appears for one second - and then silence.

  6. SSMS 18.0 crashes when closing Extended Events Watch Live Data window

SSMS 18.0 crashes when closing Extended Events Watch Live Data window.

I've had this happen on consistently using the repro steps detailed below, with SSMS running on both Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012.

    Repro steps:
    1. Create and start an XE session similar to the following:
    -- Create the session
CREATE EVENT SESSION [FailedQueries] ON SERVER
    ADD EVENT sqlserver.error_reported(
    WHERE ([severity]>(10)))
    ADD TARGET package0.ring_buffer(SET max_memory=(10240))
    WITH (MAX_MEMORY=4096 KB,EVENT_RETENTION_MODE=ALLOW_SINGLE_EVENT_LOSS,MAX_DISPATCH_LATENCY=30 SECONDS,MAX_EVENT_SIZE=0 KB,MEMORY_PARTITION_MODE=NONE,TRACK_CAUSALITY=OFF,STARTUP_STATE=OFF)
    GO
    -- Start the session
    ALTER EVENT SESSION [FailedQueries]
    ON SERVER STATE = START
    GO

    2. Select "Watch Live Data" from the context menu for the new XE session.

  7. SSMS 18.0 doesnt opens, splash screen ends with a Sound

SSMS 18.0 doesn't opens, splash screen ends with a sound.
    Repair setup doesn't fix it.
Issue is fixed after reinstalling SSMS. but reappears after some days.
Windows Event Logs doesn't show any errors, pls confirm from where to find any logged errors for SSMS.

  9. SSMS 18.1 still missing status bar colors

I posted this bug in the early betas and requested it again to be fixed after GA release but in 18.1 there is still no change.

The query status bar in SSMS 17 and older has been khaki for single server connections and pink for group connections. There is no color for either type in SSMS 18 and going into options and setting it to khaki and pink values is not retained after closing the app. This is very important indicator as a quick confirmation that I'm not in a milti-server query window before executing.

  10. Serious Issue: After Closing, SQL Will Not Open Without Reinstalling Entire Program

I have already tried working with Microsoft Support four separate times on this but nothing thus far has provided anything beyond a temporary fix. I can open SQL once I install the program, but once I close it I need to reinstall the program to open it again. I have been having issues with another unrelated program since April but have been using SQL since late May, so I have no idea if the two problems are related (I suspect they are).

  11. ADD SENSITIVITY CLASSIFICATION statement support for SSDT

Azure SQL Vulnerability Assessment will identify columns in the database that should be classified as sensitive. One can do this in SSMS with a simple ADD SENSITIVITY CLASSIFICATION statement.
BUT, one CANNOT make such a statement in SSDT database project, even if the target version is Azure SQL V12.

  12. Incorrect GrantedQueryMemory(KB) Value on SQL Performance Dashboard or SSMS17.9

The inbuilt SQL Dashboard within newer versions of SSMS displays report for GrantedQueryMemory(KB) column for current request sub report. The value displays the wrong number as output displayed is in bytes while column says KB.

I have verified using the dmv "sys.dm_exec_query_stats" which lists this number in no.of pages which later is converted to KB

When checking within rdl file we can see that conversion is made with expression as =8192 * Fields!granted_query_memory.value which gets this value in bytes.

Therefore we might need to change that expression to = 8 * Fields!granted_query_memory.value

  13. SSMS Flat File Import is not working for SSMS 18.1 upgrade

When upgrading SSMS 18.0 to 18.1, the Flat File Import is no longer importing csv, tab delimited or other delimited files.

    Procedure:

    1. Open SSMS 18.1, select any database to import to.
    2. Right click | Task | Import Flat File
    3. When presented by the file browse of the Wizard, navigate to where the attached (test_csv.txt) and load
    4. The attached (flat_file_import_error.png) appears.

note: This looks to be happening in my machine, as a fresh install SSMS 18.1 instead of an update on a different machine works.

    Attached:
    flat_file_import_error.png - screenshot of error
    test_csv.txt - sample csv used

  14. Can't Install SSMS 18 with Visual Studio 2019

Installing SSMS 18 GA will fail if Visual Studio 2019 has been installed, as the former requires Visual Studio Tools for Applications 2017, which will not install if the latter is already installed.

  15. Reimplement ERD Diagrams in (SSMS18)

ERD Diagrams are basically needed to check the structure (visual) of a database. it was a key component of SSMS. Why would you even remove it and force us to install another 3rd party app, while SSMS is already a bloatware on itself...

  17. Migrating data from say 2017 SQL Web edition to SQL Standard. Any limitations?

For one of our projects we were hoping to use the 2017 MS SQL web edition for pre-production(DEV, UAT, QA etc) and post-QA testing migrate the data, stored procedures/scripts to STD edition in production. Involves one big push initially and then with every release smaller data being pushed. Are there any limitations or compatibility issues we can run into?

  18. Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Deployment.exe not in ssms 2018

It appears that the deployment utility for SSAS is not included in the latest release of SSMS 18. Are there plans to include it or is this being ported over to ssdt?

  19. SSMS 18.1

SSMS 18.1 has a bug in restoring databases from UNC folders

    Repro:
    - Object Exploere right click restore database
    - Source: Chose Device and Press ...
    - Press Add
    - Enter a UNC path into the field Backup File Location and press Enter

In the older versions (17.x and older) the dialog showed the content of the UNC folder. Now nothing happen.

  20. Don't deprecate database diagrams.

I design large scale databases visually with the diagram feature of SQL server. I cannot comprehend how a db designer would tackle a large scale ER model. What is the reason for the deprecation and what is the planned alternative?
