SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. Detaching job from schedule delete schedule

In SSMS 2008, I get the following error and schedule is deleted when I unselected job from schedule ("Jobs referencing a Schedule" window) :
Cannot access properties or methods for the Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Agent.JobSchedule 'CollectorScheduleEvery6h', because it has been dropped. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

When I remove schedule from job ("Job Properties" window), schedule is deleted.
In SSMS 2005 schedule isn't deleted.

  2. XML DML delete causes problems with xsi nil

After running delete XML DML query xsi:nil="true" is appended to some nodes (not related to query). This does not happen when running 'insert' or 'replace'.

This is quite serious issue for me - I am using xsi:nil to distinguish null from empty string.

    Hi Marcin

Thanks for reporting this problem. This is a known issue with the way that we internally keep track of xsi:nil values… the fix is not easy and so far not many people have stumbled across it in real-world scenarios. However, with your report we are taking another look at fixing it… if you need a fix quickly, I recommend that you file a support case with CSS. Feel free to point them to this bug for more information.

    Best regards
    Michael

    Hi Marcin

We are working on fixing this now for an upcoming release. However, since it will break existing behaviour, I would like you to provide us some feedback on how fixing it will impact your current workarounds. Could you please get back to me at mrys at microsoft dot com?

    Thanks

  3. Recovery portion of SQL 2008 Restore takes much longer than normal when restoring from SQL 2005 backup

We have a fairly large SQL Server 2005 (Build 3294) striped backup (two 470GB backup files) that we are have tried to restore onto SQL Server 2008 CU2, running on a separate Windows 2008 Enterprise Edition server. The restore is with no recovery.

The restore portion completes quickly, but the recovery portion takes 14 hours. There is very little CPU or disk activity during the recovery portion. This SQL 2008 restore\recovery had the 3605, 3400, and 3004 trace flags turned on from the start. The restore took 2:13, while the recovery took 14:08.

As an experiment, I recovered the database…

    Greetings.
I need clarification on your problem. You state that you did restore with NO RECOVRERY, but that the recovery phase took longer than expected. NO RECOVERY should not have any recovery phase.

The extra work involved in restoring a 2005 database to a 2008 server is that during the recovery phase, we upgrade the physical database structures to the 2008 format. If you look in the SQL log, it should document what upgrade steps are happening, with timestamps so you should be able to see which step is taking the time.

    <=-=Jan 12 2009 3:05PM=-=>

We are doing a full database restore with NO RECOVERY as a first step to prepare a database for database mirroring. After the restore of the full database backup completes, we would restore multiple transaction log backups with NO RECOVERY.

We are purposely trying to mirror…

  4. Management Data Warehouse notable_query_plans table not purging

The snapshots.notablequeryplans table does not seem to be getting purged. I have ~40GB DB, and the notablequeryplans table is ~30GB of it with data going back to August 2008. It is still growing by > 200MB per day.

The mdwpurgedata job seems to be running fine for the rest of the data, it just doesn't seem to affect the query plans table.

  5. SSRS 2008 & Correct XML Data Types

When using the XML data source feature of SSRS 2008, it seems like it treats all returned fields as STRINGs. It would be nice if you could tell SSRS (or have it read the WSDL) to know what data types each field is, and actually cast each fields correctly.

Example: I have a web service that returns dates, ints, and strings. It seems like SSRS just converts everything to a STRING. For my Date fields, it converts them to the standard XML date/time string (e.g. 2002-05-30T09:30:10+06:00). I'm unable to sort or display these fields correctly. It seems like SSRS should…

  7. Rendering difference between SSRS 2005 and 2008 version for Print Layout (or PDF) in case of merged cells and hidden columns

Rendering difference between SSRS 2005 and 2008 version for Print Layout (or PDF) in case of merged cells and hidden columns. Normal view (HTML) renders as expected.

When you've a report header which is a merged cell for a table with multiple columns, and you hide one or more columns within the range of the merged cells, rendering in normal view (HTML) and print layout (PDF) in SSRS 2005 works fine and renders as expected.

But in SSRS 2008 it renders as expected in normal view (HTML) only.
In case of print layout (and thus PDF etc) it renders only…

    Hello,

thanks for reporting this issue. We confirmed this is a bug in SSRS 2008 and we plan to release the fix with Cumulative Update #4 for SQL Server 2008. Cumulative Update #3 was just released a few days ago, so #4 is probably available within ~3 months.

    Thanks,

thanks for the confirmation. 2 questions.
    1) What issues are solved in de CU3, and where can CU3 be downloaded?
    2) Is it possible to get a hotfix before the release of CU4, because the bug happens in a lot of reports, and will occur when printing those reports. Allthough it won’t occur when viewing the report on screen, but people likes to have a hard copy on paper or as a pdf.

    Dear customer,

Thank you for reporting this problem. To help us reproduce this problem, please revert back with the mouse type and the IntelliPoint driver version number. Thanks for writing in to Microsoft.

  9. XML format file causes bulk insert of wrong data into NOT NULL column

BULK INSERT into a table with a NOT NULL column behaves very badly when an XML format file is used and there are missing or all-whitespace data values in the source file. No error is raised and incorrect data values are inserted into the table. (Specifically, when there is missing, whitespace, or otherwise invalid data, the NOT NULL column repeatedly receives the last non-null value of the column.

If a non-XML format file is used, the behavior is not bad.

This bug is similar to Connect item 405579, however the problem is not as localized as that bug report suggest.…

  10. MDW Report "Disk usage for database" has incorrect value under the "Disk Space Used by Data Files" section

The Management Data Warehouse report "Disk usage for database" shows an invalid value under the "Disk Space Used by Data Files" section. It either shows the literal value "MB MB" or "GB GB" under the "Space Used" column - instead of showing an actual space used value.

    Hi Erland,

We took a look at this bug along with several others recently. Unfortunately, triaging it against other critical bugs, I do not think we would get to investigating this in the near future. However, we have taken note of this internally, and when we revisit this functionality in the future, we will try and get this resolved.

You could use many other symbols (quotes, paranthesis, etc.) to demarcate a portion of the comment you want to have nested. For example, you could do:

/* My comment including “nested comment” and blah /

    OR
    /
    My comment including…

  12. ACCESS_VIOLATION crash when using FOR BROWSE on a synonym for a remote object

Retrieving a browse mode cursor through use of the FOR BROWSE clause in a SELECT statement (or executing a SELECT when SET NO_BROWSETABLE ON is in effect) does not work for synonyms to remote objects. When executing such a query, SQL Server produces a crash dump.

One notable user of such queries is 2005 BIDS. Using a synonym as part of a stored procedure or view in the designer results in the situation that you will be able to preview the data (when BROWSE is not used) but no columns will be created for components as
    metadata retrieval fails.

  15. Materialized Reference Dimension cannot be updated through Dimension ProcessUpdate

If you have a dimensions linked to a measure group through a materialized reference link and want to refresh it, the ProcessUpdate on the intermediate dimension will not update the materialized reference. Materialized references are refreshed only when the measure group is processed. Non materialized ones works just fine while materialized ones simply show bad data (old, not refreshed) if you leverage the process update on the dimensions.
This is clear, due to the fact that the relationship is resolved through JOIN made inside the measure group processing and not during dimension processing for materialized relationships, still I think it…

  16. SqlClient.SqlConnection.Close method does not release server-side resources

SqlClient.SqlConnection.Close method does not release server-side resources. When a Connection is closed, it is returned to the pool but ADO.NET does not close and does not reset the Connection until the connection is reopened. This means that any resources allocated to the connection are left in use on the server (the server state) is maintained until the next reuse or the connection times out (4-8 minutes later). This reduces performance because of resources not being freed by applications that can no longer access the server-side objects.

    Hello,

I just wanted to let you know this issue has been closed accidentally. I reactivated it and we will evaluate it again.

The confusion comes from the fact that the bug has been filed against SQL Server Engine, while it seems to belong to ADO.NET. Please let me know if Im missing something here?
