SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server 2017 powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server 2017 brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.

The following bug was reported on version SMSS 18.1 at the following URL back in July but there has been just an unhelpful response from Microsoft.

  2. Toda vez que clico no dbo.DER para abrir os diagramas, o programa fecha do nada.

Baixei o SQL Server corretamente, ele inicia normalmente e até crio alguma coisa. Mas quando vou abrir o diagrama no link dbo. , o programa fecha. O que pode ser?

It'a good idea to save password if users select this option on the interface.

  6. sys.dm_exec_input_buffer(@@SPID, NULL) returns "VIEW SERVER STATE permission was denied on object 'server', database 'master'."

Executing the system function sys.dm_exec_input_buffer, passing @@SPID and NULL (or 0) for the arguments, within a trigger succeeds in returning the SQL statement that caused the trigger, however, it still throws the error message "VIEW SERVER STATE permission was denied on object 'server', database 'master'."
The documentation for sys.dm_exec_input_buffer states that the user will have access to commands issued in their own session if they do not have the "VIEW SERVER STATE" permission, however, since it still throws the error, it basically prevents using this under normal circumstances.
It should not throw this error when attempting to do something that…

  7. Enable copying Script Tasks within the same SSIS package in SSDT

As described in https://kohera.be/blog/sql-server/the-dangers-of-copying-script-components-in-ssis/ when copying an existing Script Task in a package either within the same data flow or to another one, it seems to keep the same Assembly Name for the script project which prevents modifications and isolation of the code of the duplicate Script.

Ideally when copying the new task the assembly name would be regenerated either based on the ID of the component or similar.

  8. Database Diagrams are crashing Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 18.2

After creating a new Databse Diagram, handling a modifed custom table view (maybe happening in other cases too) is impossible to reopen the diagram after closing the program without the Management Studio restarting.

Is impossible to open the file, with the Management Studio aways restarting. Is getting very annoying to recreate the Diagram every time I need to use the Management Studio.

No errors are shown, the program just restarts and never opens the Diagram.

  9. Updating SLES 12 SP2 to SP4 breaks SQL Server 2017

Possibly related to https://feedback.azure.com/forums/908035-sql-server/suggestions/32897533-rhel-7-openssl-update-breaks-latest-microsoft-od. I find that the latest version as of today installed on SLES 12 SP4 will not work, or rather it works, but you cannot connect. Backrevving the OS to SP2 (install SP2 from scratch) and then installing 14.0.3192.2-2 works tough. Also the docs suggest a command like sqlcmd -S localhost -U SA -P '<YourPassword>', but 'localhost' does not work, using the IP address works though.

    Example:
    sle12sql2017:/opt/mssql/lib # sqlcmd -S 10.10.10.10 -U sa -P password
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server : TCP Provider: Error code 0x2746.
    Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft ODBC Driver…

  11. intellisense memory leak in management studio

When working with a "larger" multi alter procedure statement, a memory leak occurs with IntelliSense when there are a few errors present in the file - A normal occurrence when making wholesale changes or writing a new procedure. SSMS Memory usage at startup is under 100MB, and once the race condition starts, CPU usage rises to a constant 25-40% and consumes 30-50MB of memory a second until it reaches about 2800MB. At this point, SSMS stops responding until it releases memory, but the race condition is still there. The cycle continues with each time SSMS stops responding, when it releases…

  15. Operation that creates temp table or declares table variable can fail when database is single_user mode with error 924

When you have set a database in single-user mode and run an operation in that database, the last thing you expect is your operation to fail because another process attempts to get into the database. However, this can happen, if you invoke a scope that creates a temp table or a table variable. Here is a repro. It assumes that the database is Northwind, but that is not important.

    Run this in Window 1:

    USE Northwind
    go
    ALTER DATABASE Northwind SET SINGLE_USER
    go

In a second window run this script:

    USE tempdb
    go
    DECLARE @error bit
    Again:
    BEGIN TRY
    SELECT…

  16. CmdExec job step editor slow to open

In SSMS 18.2, when trying to edit a CmdExec job step, the editor is super slow to open, often takes 30 or more seconds. This same behavior does not happen with T-SQL job steps.

  17. SQL Server 2016 installed on Server 2012 R2 using SSMS 18.2

I experienced an issue where a login's default language would show as Arabic after being created using the default for SQL Server, and English wasn't an available choice in the pull-down list. When uninstalling 18.2 and installing 17.9.1 the default language showed as English, which is the correct SQL Server default in this case.

  19. AlwaysOn auto seeding (SQL Server 2017)

When you create a new availability group by using the "New Availability Group Wizard" and set the seeding mode to automatic, the seeding is failed and the database is not created in secondary replica.
Only after granting the availability group permissions to create any database:
ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP [MyAG] GRANT CREATE ANY DATABASE
    GO
and removing the database from availability group and add it again, it's working well.
I can't grant the permission to create database before the availability group was created so it will be nice that it will be done automatically by the wizard.
    Also, it will be…

  20. TempTable not deletable and then recreateable within same script

    Hi,

    tested on
    Microsoft SQL Server 2017 (RTM-CU16) (KB4508218) - 14.0.3223.3 (X64)
    Jul 12 2019 17:43:08
    Copyright (C) 2017 Microsoft Corporation
    Express Edition (64-bit) on Windows 10 Enterprise 10.0 <X64> (Build 18362: )

according to an old stackoverflow question
    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/659051/check-if-a-temporary-table-exists-and-delete-if-it-exists-before-creating-a-temp

I created a similar script (look at doubleDelete_temptable.txt)

Although I explicitly check on existence of that table and wait a second, and the check denies its existence, if exec that script it fails with a 2714 message
    >Object with this Name "#Results already exists <

I think that could be considered as a bug ?
