SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.

  2. The ssms database properties dialogue reads file locations from sys.database_files instead of master.sys.master_files

    in a SQL Always on availability group if the db file locations are not identical across all nodes the database properties dialogue displays the location of the DB's on the primary replica as it apprears to read from sys.databasefiles.
    When connected to the node (that is not the primary) rather than the listener it gives incorrect information as we should be returning the location of the files on the node ie reading from master.sys.master
    files

  5. SQL Server Management Studio Grid Result Cannot Distinguish Space and Tab

    CREATE TABLE #TestDistinct
    (

    [Name] [varchar](50) NULL

    )

    INSERT INTO #TestDistinct VALUES ('abc ') -- space
    INSERT INTO #TestDistinct VALUES ('abc ') -- tab

    SELECT [Name], CONVERT(varbinary(20),[Name]) FROM #TestDistinct

    The grid result is as following:

    Name (No column name)
    abc 0x61626320
    abc 0x61626309

    There is no difference between the Tab and Space when showing in Grid.

  7. User assigned to the role db_datareader role should not be able to modify any tables in database

    1. Create a user "AB" assign the role db_datareader on a database.

    2. Create a table "db_datareader.emp".

    3. Log in to SQL Server using the login "AB"

    4. As per the assigned role user should not be able to edit data in the table. However he will be able to insert data and even truncate the table.

    5. This can be considered as major bug as it needs to be fixed across all versions.

    6. Same issue is persistent even with the role db_backupoperator.

    7. Database Roles and their functionality associated with respective schema's needs to be validated and fixed.

  9. SSMS 18.5 Replication Monitor bug - defaults to Windows authentication

    SSMS 18.5 Replication Monitor Publisher Settings all default back to Windows Authentication for the Publisher Connection and Distributer Connection after a machine restart in Windows 10, even when they are set to use SQL Authentication. This requires having to re-set them back to SQL Auth each time the PC is restarted.

  11. In Management Studio v18.5, no Database can be selected in the "Export Data" wizard as it was in previous version

    Please check the "Task->Data Export" wizard in Mgmt Studio v18.5. The Database selection box isn't available any more. Export always go to master db in target instance!

  15. SSMS 18x will not install

    SSMS 18x will not install - it launches, giving the UAC message, but no install, no error, no nothing after that. Fresh install of SQL 2019. Next try to install SSMS 18.4, then previous 18.x. Get the above behavior for every version

  16. sp_send_dbmail inserts random spaces or randomly encodes HTML tags

    When using sp send dbmail in SQL Server 2016, it is randomly inserting spaces in the returned text, or randomly encoding HTML tag entities (see attached file). The sproc is being called from a job with the following parameters:

  17. Cannot modify data in view/table that contains square brackets in text column

    When editing data via Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio v18.5, if the data is in a text data type column and that data contains square brackets, the modification fails and it reports an Optimistic Concurrency Control Error. See the message below.
    I found via SQL Profiler that it does this because it compares the current value to the old version using a LIKE criteria, but it does not properly escape the square brackets. Will it also not escape other characters such as ' ?
    Note that the original data in that column was a SQL Select statement. e.g. SELECT [Index],…

  19. SSMS is ****

    SSMS 18.5 won't even run my queries. Thinks I'm on a read-only connection.. but I'm not. It works fine in 17.9.1

    No matter what version of SSMS you run, when it crashes, it also loses all configuration information, snippets, etc. It's such junk, I stopped even trying to customize SSMS more than a decade ago.

    Thanks, Microsoft, for continuing to produce ****** software. ADS sucks so much worse than SSMS. I wish somebody would just fix all of the many many problems with SSMS, instead of deserting it so they can push the junk Azure cloud service. I've already told…

  20. Procedure with named constraint in a temp. table with throw fails with AG in next executions

    If you have a temp. table in a procedure that has a named primary key, and the execution of the procedure ends in throw in a setup with AG, the next execution will fail to an error saying that the constraint already exists.

    If I use raiserror instead of throw, this does not happen.

    If I wait something like 5-10 seconds before the next execution, then everything works fine.

    The procedure:

    create or alter procedure temp_table_test

    @FAILTYPE tinyint
    as
    CREATE TABLE #TEST (
    ID int not null,
    CONSTRAINT TEST_PK PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (ID)
    )

    if (@FAILTYPE = 1) begin
    ; …
