SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.

  3. SSMS 18.5 forgets remembered passwords again

This seemed to be working ok in 18.4 i hadn't had this issue since upgrading, but now in 18.5 it instantly started occurring again. Immediately after installing 18.5 in fact, the existing stored credentials showed the password had been forgotten again, even if i re-enter it and tick 'Remember', it'll be forgotten again if, for instance, my connection is dropped and i need to reconnect to the server.

  5. SSMS / Central Management Server does not save Server Property Authentication for Azure SQL

SSMS does not save Server Property "Authentication" as "Azure Active Directory - Integrated" for Azure SQL when it is added into a Central Management Server. When SSMS closes and reopens, the Authentication Property reverts back to "Windows Authentication".

  10. Cannot connect to Azure SQL Database using MFA in SQL Server Management Studio

I am working remotely. I am on my home PC, connected to corpnet via VPN, and using remote desktop to connect to my main work PC. I am trying to connect to my Azure SQL database using SQL Server Management Studio (18.4, the latest).

Normally (when I'm not remote) I can connect using "Azure Active Directory - Integrated", but when I try to do that while remoting in I get an error instructing me to use MFA.

However, when I try to use "Azure Active Directory - Universal with MFA" it eventually results in an error and I am unable…

  11. SQL Server 2019 scalar functions with inline are broken

This SQL code returns "a" instead of "asdfg":

CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[GetPayload2] (@ID int) RETURNS VARCHAR(300) AS
    BEGIN
    IF @ID = 1
    RETURN 'asdfg'
    RETURN ''
    END
    GO
    SELECT dbo.GetPayload2(1)

Reproduced on both 15.0.2000.5 and 15.0.2070.41. Works fine in SQL Server 2017.
Workaround is to use WITH INLINE = OFF.

  14. WSUS Deployment of SQL Server 2016 SP2 CU Updates become "Not Applicable", should be "Installed"

I am using WSUS to deploy the SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2 CU updates. The CU updates will show as "Not Installed" before the update is applied, after the update is applied, instead of showing as "Installed", it reports the status as "Not Applicable". This is the incorrect state as the update is indeed installed, and should be reporting as Installed.

    Steps to reproduce:

    1. On a Windows Server 2012 R2 endpoint, install SQL Server 2016 Developer Edition with SP2. (ensqlserver2016developerwithservicepack2x64dvd_12194995)

    2. Point the endpoint to a configured WSUS and Approve…

  16. The ssms database properties dialogue reads file locations from sys.database_files instead of master.sys.master_files

in a SQL Always on availability group if the db file locations are not identical across all nodes the database properties dialogue displays the location of the DB's on the primary replica as it apprears to read from sys.databasefiles.
When connected to the node (that is not the primary) rather than the listener it gives incorrect information as we should be returning the location of the files on the node ie reading from master.sys.master
    files

  19. SQL Server Management Studio Grid Result Cannot Distinguish Space and Tab

    CREATE TABLE #TestDistinct
    (

    [Name] [varchar](50) NULL

    )

INSERT INTO #TestDistinct VALUES ('abc ') -- space
INSERT INTO #TestDistinct VALUES ('abc ') -- tab

    SELECT [Name], CONVERT(varbinary(20),[Name]) FROM #TestDistinct

The grid result is as following:

    Name (No column name)
    abc 0x61626320
    abc 0x61626309

There is no difference between the Tab and Space when showing in Grid.
