SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server powers your entire data estate by supporting structured and unstructured data sources. It builds on previous versions of SQL Server, which have been industry leading for four years in a row and a leader in TPC-E. It scales to petabytes of data and allows customers to process big data through PolyBase using T-SQL over any data. SQL Server has also been the least vulnerable database during the last seven years. SQL Server brings data insights with business intelligence capabilities that provide analytics at a fraction of the cost on any device along with advanced analytics with support for R and Python.

More details about SQL Server are available in the SQL Server documentation.
If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

  1. There is a bug in SSMS

When trying to add read-only routing list it fails if no servers name or ip were added before. If you add the servers name\ip and also the order of the routing it will fail.
The issue is because of the order of the code behind, script it and see that you need to add the servers name (Read-only routing url) and after it is written the order list can be written (Read-only routing list).

  3. BCP always adds a row delimiter after 2022 chars and has a bug when declaring an empty row delimiter

There are a couple of bugs in BCP that don't allow you to extract a proper formatted JSON (or XML) file. In details:

    • BCP always adds a row delimiter after 2022 chars

    • BCP uses 63.502 white spaces (0x20) as row delimiter using -c if you pass an empty row delimiter (-r). So you'll find 63.502 white space after 2022 chars and at the end of the string.

    • BCP uses 63.502 combinations of chars 0x20 and 0x00 as row delimiter using -w if you pass an empty row delimiter (-r). So you'll find 63.502 white space after 2022 chars and at…

  4. Fix code outlining in SSMS when developing functions

When developing Stored Procedures, you can collapse all statements, BEGIN/END groups, everything. When developing functions, you can only collapse comment blocks and the entire CREATE/ALTER statement.

Can you please make it so code outlining works the same way as it does for stored procedures across all SQL objects?

I've attached some photos that make it very clear.

  5. SqlServer PS Module: "Invoke-Sqlcmd -InputFile" Feature Messes Up Extended Character Encoding

I just built a system to deploy tables/modules/scripts to SQL Server from script files using the "SQL Server Powershell" that is started from SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio). That is, by opening the context menu for a server node in Object Explorer and choosing "Start PowerShell."

The system uses "Invoke-Sqlcmd -InputFile", and it seemed pretty good; well, at least until we deployed a stored procedure that has extended characters in string literals and comments. The stored procedure that got created in the server had its extended characters corrupted. I ran a series of tests, and I determined the problem exists…

I'm trying to install some software on my computer and I'm getting this message:

"Service SQL Server VSS Writer ' ( SQLWriter ) failed to start . Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services"

Is there anyone who can tell me how to fix this? I was told that SQL SERVER software needs to be installed but I can't tell which version

  8. Force Ambiguous columns in ORDER BY to throw a compilation error

SSMS seems a bit too forgiving on ambiguous columns in the ORDER BY clause of a query. For example, given two simple tables with overlapping field names, the parser will warn but allow an ambiguous column name. In this case, "Active". Mousing over the field suggests that t2.Active will be chosen, but it actually orders by t1.Active.

This can be reproduced with the following code.
DECLARE @T1 TABLE (Field1 INT, Active BIT)
DECLARE @T2 TABLE (Field1 INT, Active BIT)

    INSERT INTO @T1 (Field1, Active)
    VALUES (1, 1), (2,1), (3,0), (4, 0)
    INSERT INTO @T2 (Field1, Active)
    VALUES (1, 0), (2,1),…

  9. SSRS ChartItemInLegend.ActionInfo does not do anything

In the image I have attached, it shows a portion of the properties tab in Report Designer, where you can add an action to the Legend when on a Pie Chart. When I do add this information, nothing has changed on the legend. I check the rdl and the definition leads me to ChartItemInLegend.ActionInfo which in the documentation, seems to indicate that it is possible to add an action to the legend, but everything I have tried has failed.

Is it possible for someone to provide some insight into this?

Question was also asked here, with no solution found.

  10. SSMS 18.6 - Create view index was outside of the bounds of the array

Right clicking on Views in Object Explorer and selecting New View from the context menu fails with an error message "Index was outside of the bounds of the array". See attached screenshot. I also have a memory dump if necessary.

    The server version is: Microsoft SQL Server 2017 (RTM-CU22) (KB4577467) - 14.0.3356.20 (X64) Aug 20 2020 22:33:27

  11. Stop the beeping when scripting from Object Explorer!

Using SSMS 18.6, when I right-click on an object in Object Explorer, such as a table or stored proc, and choose Script As -> Create To -> New Query Editor Window (for example), it now pops up a progress window (not necessary, but I can ignore it) but then it BEEPS (bell sound) when it is done, every time.

I have unchecked the option "Play the Windows default beep when a query batch complete" but that has no effect. It beeps.ever.single.time. For no reason.

  13. where is SqlStudio.bin

Don't want my password to save and cannot get it to stop saving. Have unchecked the box & it does nothing.

Also don't see the password in UserSettings.xml file, but not clear that it would/should be there.

This message provides no actionable information.
What would be REALLY helpful is the name of the object reference which is not set to an instance. i.e. sourceFileName, destinationFileName, table name, column name, etc.
The report as formatted now basically says "something went wrong somewhere".…

  17. Loading packages error

It is a shame that I have to resort on the following steps below to fix this issue. This is not a beta or release candidate version!! Unbelievable! Go fix the simplest problem first!

    1) Remove "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 18" folder
    2) Delete registry key "HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio"
    3) Install SSMS

  18. Please Restore SQL Agent Step Output Icons from SSMS 17

In SQL Server Management Studio 17, when a job had verbose output and the "Include step output in history" was selected, the job history would produce

    1. A top-level Success or failure icon

    2. Then when you expanded the history, a "ribbon" icon with the verbose output.

In SSMS 18, the icons changed and now the ribbon is gone, and then a mix of "job is running" and "success" icons are displayed.

Can the ribbons please be restored? They made more sense. The current output isn't just confusing to me, there are people asking on stackoverflow as well

    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/55908033/duplicate-step-entries-in-ssms-job-history-log-file-viewer

    Thanks,
