Azure Monitor- Alert Management

Azure Alert Management provides a unified alerting experience across all Azure monitoring services including but not limited to Azure Monitor (Metrics and Activity Logs), Application Insights and OMS Log Analytics with support for third party services coming in future.
Azure Alert Management provides features such as alert correlation and state management.
This forum is to discuss anything related to alerting in Azure.

  1. Role Assignment

I want to create an e-mail alert whenever Role Assignments are created/modified at the subscription level without using PIM. If anyone has done this or knows how to do it please let me know. I have created numerous alerts during testing (i.e. by doing the action then using the log entry in the activity log to create the alert etc.) but the action doesn't trigger an e-mail alert. (I have used the same action groups that work for other alerts at lower resource group/VM level successfully)

  2. Add tenant name to Azure email alerts

As a partner we receive alerts from several different clients for ASR and or backup events. Currently the alert states the name and subscription number. It would be nice if it also included the tenant name. That way we quickly know which client is having the issue. VM name is often not enough information. Many clients can use the same VM names.

  3. Support Combining Dynamic Threshold Criteria with Static Threshold Criteria

Please support combining dynamic threshold criteria with static threshold criteria. I would like to combine a dynamic threshold with a static threshold. For instance, I would like to fire an alert when the dynamic threshold is exceeded but only when it also exceeds a minimum static threshold.

  4. Provide improved alerting for global or region-specific Azure service disruption

High-level alerting for Azure service disruption relies on the Azure status page, but this is often slow to reflect issues and can't be used as a reliable indicator.

Service health alerts can be configured for all services in specific regions, but these will only trigger if the subscription in which the alert is based contains an impacted resource - this means that you need to configure the same health alerts in every subscription just to be sure of catching it.

Those of us who manage many tenants would find it useful to have an over-arching and entirely independent (i.e. not…

  5. Azure Monitor alert email format

I would like the alert email format to be compatible with the text format.

  6. Availability Test SMS alert can't includes description details like email alert

Upon setting up the Availability Test, there's an option to change the description of Alert Notification but not the title. On Email Notification, there's no problem since it was able to get the customized description. However, for SMS, the notification is not descriptive and seems only pulling the title instead of getting the description as well.

Is there a way to customize the SMS notification to make it more descriptive?

  7. Alert on Resource Type Metrics

Adding basic alerts to every resource is inefficient, and can sometimes lead to unmonitored resources if one is forgotten. It would be useful if the metric alert scope could look at all of a type of resource for certain metrics.

This would allow us to set up one alert per resource type / metric and have it apply to all existing and future resources of that type without needing to manually assign it.

    For example:

An alert looking at all SQL Databases and alerting if any reaches 70% space used.

Looking at all VMs, alerting when CPU Usage reaches 90%.

  8. Allow more than 500 values within a single metric based alert rule

Allow more than 500 values within a single metric based alert rule.

it does not take long to exceed the 500 limit, even doing something simple like % free space on servers with a single drive letter.
    Limit should be configuration.
if performance is the concern limit the evaluation frequency as the dimension increases.

  10. Add the option to send one alert per result when alerting from a log analytics query.

Add the option to send one alert per result when alerting from a log analytics query.

within the configure signal logic screen add the option.

Send one alert per result Y/N

    for example

This query might list more than one result

    Perf
    | where InstanceName matches regex "[A-Z]:"
    |where TimeGenerated >= ago(15m) and CounterName == "% Free Space" and CounterValue < 20
    | summarize by Computer, ObjectName, CounterName, InstanceName, CounterValue

instead of sending all the results data in one alert, send one alert per row from the results.

  11. Provide some form of alert rule foldering or grouping

Provide some form of alert rule foldering or grouping.

Having a single list for all alerts is primitive.
allow us to create groups or folders,
for example we would have a group for production servers that might have different thresholds than non-prod.
or a group for a specific group of application servers.

  12. allow alert rule edit/update on all fields

Add the ability to edit all fields in an alert rule.
We should not have to delete and re-create to change the name or other fields.

all fields in the alert rule should be editable.

  13. Add the option for "select all " in the computer list to auto-update as new servers are added, currently we would need to update manually

Add the option for "select all " in the computer list within an alert rule to auto-update as new servers are added, currently we would need to update manually.
but it needs to be a select-able option.

    auto-update server list y/n

  14. Ability to increase Aggregation granularity (period) to more than 24 hours

Currently the maximum value for aggregation granularity is 24 hours. We have a scenario where we would like to have this number way higher, like 48 or 72 hours. It would be great if this can be made available so that we don't have to look around for other alerting platforms.

  15. Centralized dashboard to track all alert activities (email, issue, alert monitoring)

We should be able to have a complete dashboard to see how many alerts were fired, the type of issues, and see exactly if they are actually working

  16. Edit Resolved Notifications

Currently, through the new Action Rules, you can add a Description to the rule for when it fails. This Description can then be utilised for your notifications and is shown in emails/webhooks/any other notification you setup. (On a separate note specifically for webhooks, it would be useful for it to preview the JSON schema it is going to use).

Once the Action Rule's criteria is no longer failing, it changes to "Resolved". This then also sends out notification to the same setup emails/webhooks/any other notification. However, there is no functionality in place to edit this notification or add a Description.

  17. Add Additional Event Triggers on Storage Account Alerting

Monitoring and alerting on Storage Account resources seems to be focused on metric and general resource administration alert triggers.

Ability to create/trigger an alert on the addition of a new blob/file to a container/containers in the storage account.

  18. Automatically resolve alerts with configurable criteria

It doesn't appear to be possible to automatically resolve alerts based on a configurable criteria (e.g. the alert has not been triggered for X period). This would be immensely useful for certain alerting scenarios.

For example, I have an alert which triggers when updates are available for managed Windows servers using a log search condition and email action. Once the updates are installed, the alert will no longer trigger, but the alert is still active in a "New" state unless it's manually closed.

  19. Store the alert state in Log Analytics together with existing alert information

Azure Monitor alert information are not written/reported into log analytics, hence it's not easy to create any visualization about alert state aggregation, trending and so on. Why not implementing a native write operation into log analytics or a solution which moves alert data to it?

  20. Ability to Suppress "From now" for a configurable amount of time instead of "Always"

It would be great to be able to have a From Now suppression that would auto-disable after a configurable amount of time to re-enable the alerting automatically. There are options for configurable Endtimes for suppressions but those also start at specific times. I want to be able to easily Suppress something that I know is going on now, maybe for an hour, or 24 hours, and have it automatically re-enable, without needing to go edit the Action Rule settings each time to configure the time range each time.
