Azure Alert Management

Azure Alert Management provides a unified alerting experience across all Azure monitoring services including but not limited to Azure Monitor (Metrics and Activity Logs), Application Insights and OMS Log Analytics with support for third party services coming in future.
Azure Alert Management provides features such as alert correlation and state management.
This forum is to discuss anything related to alerting in Azure.

How can we improve the alerting experience for any Azure service you use?

  1. There should be a maintanance mode feature in App Insight for planned downtime

We have 8 web tests under one App Insight workspace to monitor the availability of our service. Now we have to do planned maintenance which will affect all these 8 web tests. Since there is no quick option available on App Insight to put entire workspace on maintenance mode we have to individually click on "Disable Webtest" button for each web tests before beginning the maintenance and then post maintenacen activities we have to again click on "Enable Webtest" button for each of these 8 webtests which is not efficient.

Can we please get "Maintenance mode" feature in App Insight…

  2. Customize Alert Email

Alert Templates should be provided to configure the email subject, body and priority of email. This will help in categorizing the alerts in queues.

  3. To enable/disable Alert Rule add new Powershell CmdLet

We often have the need to enable or disable Alert Rules programatically with powershell. It seems there is no real cmdLet to set properties of Alert Rules.
In the powershell documentation of Alerts Rules I posted a script with a workarround to enable/disable/toggle alert rules.
Issue can be found here: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs/issues/5284
The documentation team liked the feedback to create a new CmdLet for this.

Proposal: Set-AzureRmMetricAlertRule to change properties (ie. description, enabled etc.)

    P.S.
Official documentation can be found here:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/monitoring-and-diagnostics/insights-powershell-samples#create-metric-alerts

  4. Add exception details like call stack to Alert emails for quicker investigation

Alert emails for exceptions do not show exception message and call stack. It forces us to click on app insights link which is slow to open and we've to click through multiple links to get to call stacks which is slow and can take many minutes. This is productivity loss and sometimes we don't get to investigate all alerts due to the overhead involved because of lack of this feature

  5. Application Insights: Increase length of message property

Message of logged exception is often cut off. Full data cannot be displayed.
Please increase length of message property to get full data.

  6. Add metric charts to alert email

It will be helpful to see a chart of the metric the alert email is about. Please add this to the email content.

  7. virtual machine down Alerts metric/Activity needs to be added in Azure Monitoring

    Dear Members,

As if now there is no option directly which can help to get email notification if the VM stopped working or got shutdown.

I know that there is different customized metrics like I can create in Azure Monitoring with CPU=0 to get email notifications when VM is not available but getting alerts when VM is not available should be the Basic requirements in any type of monitoring without performing such customization.

Please check possibility to add either as a metrics or activity so that it can be configured directly without using log analytics (OMS) from Azure Monitoring itself.

  8. App Insight should allow user to decide how often alert email should be repeated when issue is still not resolve and being investigated

App Insight should allow user to decide should alert email notification need to be generated for the same issue or not and how often? Sometimes it takes time to investigate and fix the issue after it gets reported by App Insight alert email.

This is especially important when we have automated process in place to generate a ticket when App Insight sends alert email notification but then ticketing system start creating duplicate tickets when App Insight sends alert emails for the same issue with same subject line until it gets resolved.

Additionally, it would be better if App Insight alert…

  9. Auto-adjusting alerts based on moving averages, and more

Please enable alerts by a percent or hard number above or below a threshold calculated by AI, as in the average value of this metric for this time of day for this day of the week. On Sunday and Monday, we have low traffic to our apps, so it is very unlikely for alerts based on Friday volume to trigger, even though there may be issues for the low volume users on a Sunday or Monday.

  10. alert when a metric sample is no longer sent (missing data)

Please support the ability to configure an alert rule to trigger then the associated metric data is no longer sent (missing data)., so that we can detect issues with the application that result in lack of data. The alert shall auto-resolve when data next arrives (and if the threshold criteria is satisfied).

we have not closed on a plan at this time. As a workaround however, please note the update here: https://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/357324-application-insights/suggestions/14428134-add-alerts-based-on-results-of-analytics-queries. With the support for metrics derived from analytics queries, you can track an aggregate of the data received, and set a different number when there are no results. Let us know if that works for you.

  11. Enable/support "new" alerts to be altered with/through CLI API

    Hi
Please enable support for new alert type through CLI API. Classic is supported
We can alter both new and classic alerts in Azure Portal, but only classic alerts with CLI. This should be prioritized as all alerts now will be created in new format to avoid migration later.
We use alerting through log analytics and directly per item. Not being able to change alert status automatically during deploys is a bit of a showstopper.
I get flashbacks to classic vs. New portal.

  12. Add Alert Rule name or description in the monitoring alert emails

When monitoring alert emails are received from Application Insights they refer to the performance metric and threshold that has been crossed (or whatever has caused the alert rule to be activated)

It would be useful if they also contained the name or description of the Alert Rule as this will often be more immediately meaningful to the recipients - particularly if they are support personnel.

    I've attached two screenshots:

One shows the alert rule configuration - with meaningful name.
And the other shows the alert email received - with just the performance metric described

  15. Alert metric Average Response Time does not graph right AND/OR I am getting false sent alerts frequently

Alerts for a sites average response time are constantly hit and there is no conditions to be found... I'd presume its my own ignorance, but the graph says all is well and New Relic says the same when comparing apples to apples. Which leads me to suspect as a tool looking at the past 5 mins as a threshold be is 3, 10, or 60... its simply being thrown constantly and not actually accurate.

See attached. The graphs are showing no such data occurrence. Yet the alerts keep firing off.

Let me know if you need more info. Happy to…

  16. Add the ability to configure alerting service windows in Application Insights

Please add the ability to configure service windows in AppInsights Alerting. We provide some services to customers in timeframes that are not 24/7, for example 10x7 or 8x5 (Business Hours). I would like to supress alerts that occur outside these services windows and provide uptime reports for our services within those service windows.

  17. Alerts for "Max Request Units" in Cosmos DB

In the legacy alerts, there was an alert called "Maxs RUs Sec" that would trigger if we hit a certain RU count on Cosmos DB.

In the new Alerts, we cannot find a way to get the same alert setup. We only see "Total Request Units" however this does not give us what we are looking for.

Is "Maxs RUs Sec" an upcoming feature? Is there a current workaround for to get this data in an alert?

  19. Add text property to webhook payload to allow easy integration with Microsoft Teams

Microsoft could then provide a desciptive text message, that explain the alert, which could be used directly in Teams and Slack etc. This would save consumers from i.e. having to create Logic apps to format the message for it to work with teams.

  20. Support Multi-Action Alert rule specification in single Activity Log resource

Currently I have to create three activity log alert resources to monitor start/stop/restart of a virtual machine.. it would be great and simplify/ease the life of Azure admin's if multi action activity log alert is made available
