Azure Alert Management

Azure Alert Management provides a unified alerting experience across all Azure monitoring services including but not limited to Azure Monitor (Metrics and Activity Logs), Application Insights and OMS Log Analytics with support for third party services coming in future.
Azure Alert Management provides features such as alert correlation and state management.
This forum is to discuss anything related to alerting in Azure.

How can we improve the alerting experience for any Azure service you use?

  1. Timely Health Alert reporting

Difficult to find the best place for this....

Today at 09:45 GMT, I discovered that I could not start a de-allocated VM in UKSouth, and raised a Microsoft support ticket at 09:47BST.

No issues were shown on the Portal Service Health and no alerts were received, until 12:32 -apparently the fault started at 06:50 UTC.

And then the Portal Service Health showed the issue at UKWest and not UKSouth.

As a consequence this has got me very concerned regarding running a service and reporting to my customers, and seems at odds with Service Management Reporting at SLAs.

    I am less…

    • Alerting TimeWindow limitation of 24-Hours makes Alerting useless. Shoud really match the retention for LogAnalytics!

Is there a way to come around some major limitations when creating Alerts? The biggest problem is the Time Window restriction. This restricts us from searching in data older than 24 hours when creating an alert. I expect a record for a custom MessageType
to arrive once a week, i am not able to create an Alert if this message does not appear as expected.
The retention days for OMS Log Analytics is minimum 31 days according to this article: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/…/change-oms-log-analytic…/
Why do we then have a limitation of 24 hours in the alert query.
      In my portal some messages…

      • Customize Alert Email

Alert Templates should be provided to configure the email subject, body and priority of email. This will help in categorizing the alerts in queues.

        • Alert email to use the name of the alert in the Email Subject

We are forced to give Alerts specific names because they cannot be duplicated, so naturally, we give them names that relate to the resource being alerted against. This "naming convention" is a great help when viewing all active alerts because we can tell at a glance which resource is affected on narrow long screens (90degree flipped screen). But the email we receive does not mention the name of the Alert anywhere. Would be really really helpful to use the Alert name in the subject line, for reading emails from mobile by Subject.

            • Allow us to suppress the number of alerts we get for administrative operations. A VM Delete alert will send 6 emails ! Thanks

Setting up an alert for a new VM or delete VM will send six emails as it's a long running operation and there is no way to suppress or limit to just one email. Microsoft case =117071616046005 thanks

              • Customized alert email subjects for down and up

We use StatusPage.io to provide a status page to our user base.

StatusPage enables us to trigger a status change based on email sent to a specific email address.

The catch is that the subject must contain the word "UP" or "DOWN". Application Insights sends canned emails that cannot be customized.

The suggestion is therefore to provide a way to customize more aspects of the mail being sent during alerting. Especially to be able to send a different subject or body on site down vs. site up.

I am using Log4Net along with Application Insights. I would like to get email/phone alerts of events with a certain severity (determined by me), every hour.

                    • App Insight should allow user to decide how often alert email should be repeated when issue is still not resolve and being investigated

App Insight should allow user to decide should alert email notification need to be generated for the same issue or not and how often? Sometimes it takes time to investigate and fix the issue after it gets reported by App Insight alert email.

This is especially important when we have automated process in place to generate a ticket when App Insight sends alert email notification but then ticketing system start creating duplicate tickets when App Insight sends alert emails for the same issue with same subject line until it gets resolved.

Additionally, it would be better if App Insight alert…

This feature request is very similar to what OMS supports in its alert rule configuration. We expect to have similar capabilities over the next few months. I do not have an ETA at this time, and will keep you posted.

                      • App Insight alert email should show all the recipients in To line

App Insight allows to set list of recipients who wants to receive alert email in the event when there is a failure with availability web tests. We can provide more than one recipients using semicolon.

Let's say we specified more than 1 recipients to receive email alert from App Insight then when recipient actually receive the alert email it only shows 1 email address of the person who received it.

It would be better to show all the all the recipients in To line of App Insight alert email so everyone who is looking at that email to know who…

                        • There should be a maintanance mode feature in App Insight for planned downtime

We have 8 web tests under one App Insight workspace to monitor the availability of our service. Now we have to do planned maintenance which will affect all these 8 web tests. Since there is no quick option available on App Insight to put entire workspace on maintenance mode we have to individually click on "Disable Webtest" button for each web tests before beginning the maintenance and then post maintenacen activities we have to again click on "Enable Webtest" button for each of these 8 webtests which is not efficient.

Can we please get "Maintenance mode" feature in App Insight…

                          • alert when a metric sample is no longer sent (missing data)

Please support the ability to configure an alert rule to trigger then the associated metric data is no longer sent (missing data)., so that we can detect issues with the application that result in lack of data. The alert shall auto-resolve when data next arrives (and if the threshold criteria is satisfied).

we have not closed on a plan at this time. As a workaround however, please note the update here: https://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/357324-application-insights/suggestions/14428134-add-alerts-based-on-results-of-analytics-queries. With the support for metrics derived from analytics queries, you can track an aggregate of the data received, and set a different number when there are no results. Let us know if that works for you.

                            • Add exception details like call stack to Alert emails for quicker investigation

Alert emails for exceptions do not show exception message and call stack. It forces us to click on app insights link which is slow to open and we've to click through multiple links to get to call stacks which is slow and can take many minutes. This is productivity loss and sometimes we don't get to investigate all alerts due to the overhead involved because of lack of this feature

                              • Extend alert setup mask with the possibility to select the aggregation type "max" for a metric

When using alerts in a webfarm scenario, the average aggregation of the metrics to monitor is useless, because significant variations of a metric on one webserver have not enough impact on the aggregated one. The aggregation type "max" would solve that issue.

                                • Add alerts based on results of Analytics Queries

It would be great be able to create an alert based on a scheduled query (p.e. when a specific dependency appears x times in a lapse of time).
Or maybe link an Analytics query to the web-tests in Application Insights.

We will be sure to move these asks, and your feedback onto their user voice once it is set up. This new alerting team will be building this in a way that allows you to do this not just on AI data, but for any other Azure data, such as from OMS.

One feedback we have thus far is the additional latency for the alerts: At this time, we first generate a derived metric, which then has to flow through the pipeline into the evaluation of…

It will be helpful to see a chart of the metric the alert email is about. Please add this to the email content.

                                    • Support alerting on a segmented/filtered metric

Please support alerting on a segmented/filtered metric, for instance:
                                      * When requests of a specific type (identified by operationName) have a spike in response time or failure rates
                                      * When exceptions of a specific type happen
                                      * Dependency failures from a specific dependency type or name
                                      * Requests fail with a specific response code
                                      * Any CPU spikes over a threshold

                                      • Add Alert Rule name or description in the monitoring alert emails

When monitoring alert emails are received from Application Insights they refer to the performance metric and threshold that has been crossed (or whatever has caused the alert rule to be activated)

It would be useful if they also contained the name or description of the Alert Rule as this will often be more immediately meaningful to the recipients - particularly if they are support personnel.

                                        I've attached two screenshots:

One shows the alert rule configuration - with meaningful name.
And the other shows the alert email received - with just the performance metric described

                                        • Add the ability to configure alerting service windows in Application Insights

Please add the ability to configure service windows in AppInsights Alerting. We provide some services to customers in timeframes that are not 24/7, for example 10x7 or 8x5 (Business Hours). I would like to supress alerts that occur outside these services windows and provide uptime reports for our services within those service windows.
