  1. Debugging support

Please add support for debugging. When using pgAdmin and other development tools they refer to the the extention pldbgapi, and would be great if this was installed by default.

  3. POWA - PostgreSQL Workload Analyzer (or alternative)

Support for POWA or another performance analyzer would be nice. https://github.com/dalibo/powa

Thank you for your interest in Azure Database for PostgreSQL.

Monitoring solutions that don’t have to be added as an extension are possible alternatives. Workable solutions query the server’s statistics through a low-privileged user role. Possible examples are pghero, pgwatch2.

Please do let us know if POWA specifically is needed and any additional comments.

    Thanks,
Rachel on behalf of the Azure Database for PostgreSQL team

  4. Publish signed/trusted docker images that match hosted extensions.

For purposes of aligning development/testing of projects hosted on Azure, it would be nice if Microsoft provided docker images for PostgreSQL, perhaps using the Bitnami images as a baseline or guide for setup scripts/options, that match Azure's production versions and extensions.

As the default and bitnami PostgreSQL images don't include many of the extensions supported by Azure, it would be great if MS provided docker images that matched the hosted environment to ensure that a local/dev/qa environment can match Azure's production environment relatively closely.

  5. Performance Benchmarking Services from Azure Portal

We have been trying to move to PaaS from our IaaS set up but the benchmarking and one thing we learned from our experience was the approach one takes to do a real benchmarking and unfortunately it varies from person to person or team to team. Even though there are a lot of recommendations laid out in the community but it would awesome to have a service in house to do a benchmarking. So basically you pick the plan that suits best your consumption pattern best and run Performance Benchmarking against all Relational DB Services provided by Azure.

  6. Inclusion of Timescaledb community edition features

When are timescaledb community edition features are expected with Azure single server for postgresql db, as open source edition in azure managed service db for postgresql does not provide continuous aggregation as well as time compression, which are strong timescaledb extension features.
Time bucketing is also a strong feature of community edition.

    Thanks

  7. Logical replication, permission denied for create subscription

create publication/subscription failed on azure database for postgresql. We need to refresh our lower environments on weekly basis. It is difficult to use DMS every time. By using logical replication it could fast and simple. I am not sure why azure restricted create publication/subscription. I can see AWS RDS providing this privilege, not in azure. I am waiting for this feature in azure for long time. It is better azure can address this soon.

  8. plperl support to enable replication using Bucardo

As far as I can see, if Azure Database for PostgreSQL had support for the plperl extension, we could use Bucardo for near zero-downtime replication/upgrade/migration similar to what is possible in Amazon RDS

  9. Support pg_background extension

This allows queries to kick off a background task query (such as logging said query)

Currently dblink extension can provide this functionality, but this exposes these requests over the network and creates finicky dns issues where the dns name must be known to the application and do split horizon resolution since the postgres vm's are not aware of private endpoints.

  11. Ability to use loopback IP in dblink as hostaddr

In AWS when using dblink, you can use loopback IP 127.0.0.1 as hostaddr when you are using cross database queries. When we migrate from AWS PostgreSQL to Azure Database PostgreSQL, we need to point the hostname to either the instance IP or server name. Hopefully this will be a new feature so that we can do the migration without changing the our codes every time we migrate to another server. For more details, here's the case ID 120031124003015.

  12. Allow admin user to be able to execute ALTER TABLE “my_table” DISABLE TRIGGER ALL

Can the 'azurepgadmin' role be enhanced so that

ERROR: permission denied: "my-trigger-name" is a system trigger

    is not encountered when executing

ALTER TABLE “my_table” DISABLE TRIGGER ALL

. The system trigger in question is one associated with a foreign key and the assocated triggers are system triggers.

  13. effective_cache_size

You should allow tuning of memory-related parameters. I have a 15GB server and the effectivecachesize is 1536MB; it should be eight times as high. Without tuning these parameters my application is simply too slow to run on your environment.

  14. Provide actual memory being used (in GB) in Azure Monitor

Provide actual memory being used (in GB) in Azure Monitor in addition to % memory used. The customer scenario is for the Persona of a QA/Test professional. Actual memory used is much more useful than % used as it related to determining the quality of a product / service. % used is tailored to SRE/Ops persona.

  15. Correct count of Postgres connections in Portal

We use the Azure postgres database and shows the connection count in our monitoring setup. We just realized that the connection count shown in the Azure Portal is not the same as Postgres repots. We had over 170 connections at one time, while the Portal showed approx. 20 connections

  16. Add DNS management to firewall rules configuration

Usually pg_hba.conf accepts DNS names so you can use i.e. my.address.ip for .... In Azure portal you can input only numeric IP addresses but this presumes you have staic public IP address. Allowing DNS management you would be able to use Dynamic DNS solving non static public IP address problem.

  18. Point in time restore to include HBA and server parameters

When restoring to a point in time, HBA settings and server parameters such as search_path are not included on the new server. It would be nice for the restore to include this configuration.

  19. Better grouping of server parameters

Would be great if server parameters were logically grouped together (rather than just being sorted alphabetically). For example, timeout settings together, logging settings together etc.

  20. API to copy the automated backups of azure sql databases and managed instances

We want to keep the transactionally consistent incremental backups for more than 35 days. The automated backups doesn't allow that. Long term backups are taken at weekly (monthly/yearly) frequency and we want backups taken hourly/daily. The export of database via sqlpackage is not transactionally consistent. Hence, an API to copy the automated backups of azure sql databases and managed instances would help us. The similar API is supported by the amazon RDS.
