  1. (Cross-region) Read replicas

Would be great to have an ability to have a master in one region (e.g. Central US) and read-only replicas in other regions (e.g. West/East US)

    (renamed; merged with "active geo-replication")

    • Add ability to authenticate against Azure Active Directory

It'd be really useful to not have to rely on DB users for authentication but allow integration with AAD. That way we can enforce password complexity, expiry etc which can't be done with native users.

First, thank you for your interest in our product! We have Active Directory integration in our overall plan but we don’t have specific time frame for it yet better than currently we expect it to be available at some point in 2018.

We’ll post an update as soon as we have better estimate.

Thank you very much for your patience and understanding!

        • Ability to restore data from a snapshot

We have a transient workload that only needs to run once every week at most. However, the DB state needs to be saved at the end of each run. Since the workload only runs occasionally, it costs quite a lot to keep the server running in the meanwhile, even at the minimum size for the tier.

While it is possible to pg_dump/restore the data, this is very slow compared to restoring from a snapshot, which would be nearly instantaneous. Currently, deleting a server also removes the ability to access backups for the server.

If one could optionally save a snapshot…

          • Firewall option: Allow access from a specific Azure resource

While the option to allow access to all Azure services is nice, I'd much rather be able to control what resources can reach my server on a more granular level.

The vnet integration is excellent, but many Azure resources (I'm thinking specifically of Data Factory at the moment) aren't integrated with vnets, for various reasons.

            • Better support for automation of installation in ARM Template / PowerShell

We massively deploy PostgreSQL instances. We (for exemple) need to automatically deploy configuration (for instances log_* parameters). It's possible to modify configuration with AZ commands. The other automation tools don't have the required functionality:

              * ARM Template cannot deploy instances with a set configuration.

              * Python2 should provide the necessary tools via azure.mgmt.* but is not very well documented (it's still in preview)

              * PowerShell as no options for that. (and very few means to interact with Postgres in general).

In general, the support for postgres is bad in automation tools (and the feature coverage not uniform). We have to…

              • Add DNS management to firewall rules configuration

Usually pg_hba.conf accepts DNS names so you can use i.e. my.address.ip for ***.***.***.***. In Azure portal you can input only numeric IP addresses but this presumes you have staic public IP address. Allowing DNS management you would be able to use Dynamic DNS solving non static public IP address problem.

                • BYOK Encryption Key

For governance reasons for managing PHI, we need to BYOK for the Disk Level Encryption. Is there any plan to expose the ability to have the storage account that the underlining managed system is using to a key that's stored in key vault?

We can't host our postgresSql Database in Azure's managed solutions, until we can.

                  • PostgreSQL as a service in Azure China

We have made good experience with PostgreSQL as a service in Azure already (even in Preview).
We would like to use it also in Azure China.

                      • Support for Ultra SSD SKU configuration

For performance critical workloads and large volumes of data, storage access latency is critical. Please support a Ultra SSD SKU configuration.

                        • Enable shutdown (deallocate equivalent) for Postgres when not in use.

For non-production environments it would be a helpful cost saving feature to be able to 'turn off' / deallocate Azure Databases (of all types not just postgres) when they are not in use.

While the prevailing logic would suggest that non-production environments should be destroyed when not in use, this is sometimes not convenient or practical when environments are required on (relatively) short notice and DB content sizes are relatively large

                          • Post PostgreSQL Version Updates

Could Azure announce beforehand when version updates will be applied to Azure Database for PostgreSQL? For instance, updates are posted when PHP gets updated (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/updates/june-2018-version-updates-to-php/).
