  1. Provide actual memory being used (in GB) in Azure Monitor

Provide actual memory being used (in GB) in Azure Monitor in addition to % memory used. The customer scenario is for the Persona of a QA/Test professional. Actual memory used is much more useful than % used as it related to determining the quality of a product / service. % used is tailored to SRE/Ops persona.

  2. Ability to use PG FDW to access one PG server from another w/o opening the firewall to all of Azure

I'd like a way to use Postgres foreign data wrapper (FDW) which is supported today to access one Azure DB for Postgres server from another, without opening the firewall on the first server to all of Azure.

  3. Correct count of Postgres connections in Portal

We use the Azure postgres database and shows the connection count in our monitoring setup. We just realized that the connection count shown in the Azure Portal is not the same as Postgres repots. We had over 170 connections at one time, while the Portal showed approx. 20 connections

  4. Add DNS management to firewall rules configuration

Usually pg_hba.conf accepts DNS names so you can use i.e. my.address.ip for ***.***.***.***. In Azure portal you can input only numeric IP addresses but this presumes you have staic public IP address. Allowing DNS management you would be able to use Dynamic DNS solving non static public IP address problem.

  6. Point in time restore to include HBA and server parameters

When restoring to a point in time, HBA settings and server parameters such as search_path are not included on the new server. It would be nice for the restore to include this configuration.

  7. Better grouping of server parameters

Would be great if server parameters were logically grouped together (rather than just being sorted alphabetically). For example, timeout settings together, logging settings together etc.

  8. Support creating VNET Service endpoint in Azure Red Hat OpenShift

Even though Azure DB for PostgreSQL provides secure connection, Applications on ARO needs to access Azure DB for PostgreSQL via internet.

Currently, VNET for ARO doesn't allow any modification, therefore, there is no option avoiding going through internet when applications connect to Azure DB for PostgreSQL.

There is no point in deploying a DB container on ARO. The user needs to consider how to manage DB.

If ARO allows modifying VNET creating Service endpoint for Azure DB for PostgreSQL, it could provide more secure route and low latency connections as well.

  9. PostGIS 3.0

PostGIS 3.0 is currently in alpha. It adds support for parallels processing of spatial queries which drastically increases the performance of spatial queries and makes PostGIS more inline with other advanced spatial databases. Please upgrade to this version of PostGIS when it is fully released.

  10. Pg_basebackup / Replication on-premise

It would be great if we could either use pg_basebackup as well as pg_dump to take backup or the ability to replica from the Azure Master to our own db instance (either a VM on Azure or on-premise).

This would mean creating replication role slots under the Connection security tab.

  11. ip4r extension

It would be great to have the ip4r extension available in the Azure Database for PostgreSQL service. We already use this extension in our self-managed psql service to use IP addresses as native objects. It is very useful for some IPAM engines like nipapd, etc.

For more information about this extension: https://github.com/RhodiumToad/ip4r

  15. Resource Governace for CPU and Memory

We are running a multi-tenant system leveraging Azure PostgreSQL.
During heavy load, one Tenant can impact the system to a point where other databases are effected.

Wondering if you are planning to support some type of resource governance in the future similar to Azure SQL
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/resource-governor/resource-governor-resource-pool?view=sql-server-2017

I realize it wont be the same implementation, but maybe a new connectionstring parameter that could be set to limit CPU/Memory could be a start?

  16. Reader Role can view Query Text

On AZ PostgeSQL Performance Insight, the role of Reader can view everything but not “query text”,
so basically like most of things in Azure we believe that Reader role should also be able to
view query text. And that is the issue and needs to be fixed in future releases.

  17. Azure VNet in paired region

For Azure SQL, service endpoint should allow traffic not only within a virtual network's region but also extend to include the paired region where the virtual network is deployed.

(Idea submitted by Manish Kumar from the engineering group of Azure Database for PostgreSQL/MySQL service on behalf of one of our customers and in order to elicit feedback from other customers and users).

  18. Rename server

Gaging interest for being able to rename a server/instance.

For instance some customers shared that the naming convention they use for servers changes as a server moves from one stage of its lifecycle to another (test -> staging -> prod for instance)

  19. Native Python and R support - extensions plpythonu, plpython2u, plpython3u

Please support extensions plpythonu, plpython2u, plpython3u so functions etc. can have Python code.

Similar request for R support with extensions like PL/R

  20. effective_cache_size

You should allow tuning of memory-related parameters. I have a 15GB server and the effective_cache_size is 1536MB; it should be eight times as high. Without tuning these parameters my application is simply too slow to run on your environment.
