  1. API to copy the automated backups of azure sql databases and managed instances

We want to keep the transactionally consistent incremental backups for more than 35 days. The automated backups doesn't allow that. Long term backups are taken at weekly (monthly/yearly) frequency and we want backups taken hourly/daily. The export of database via sqlpackage is not transactionally consistent. Hence, an API to copy the automated backups of azure sql databases and managed instances would help us. The similar API is supported by the amazon RDS.

  2. Incremental long term backups taken per hour

Can you please support the incremental long term backups taken per hour/day of azure sql databases and managed instance databases?

  3. Renaming a Postgres Server Name

After promoting a replica DB to a standalone server with this command
az postgres server replica stop -y -n -g

The new promoted server name is taken from prompted replica server name (which in most cases the name contains a replica substring and after promotion it raises some ambiguity as a name for master database)

  4. Better support of AAD groups for audit purposes

Currently there are two ways to authenticate with an Azure PostgreSQL database:
    1) as a user / managed identity
    2) as a group

    1) has the advantage that the correct user is logged in PostgreSQL's (audit) logs, but the disadvantage that a user has to be both created and authorized. Currently there is no automation that handles the creation/authorization.
    2) has the advantage that no user has to be manually created (only the group needs permissions), but the disadvantage that only the group name is logged in PostgreSQL's (audit) logs

Currently there is no way to only use AAD groups…

  5. Support Azure AD authentication for PostgreSQL Flexible Server as soon as possible

It's exciting to see the improvements Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server (currently in Preview) has made over the old single server deployment model.

However, at the moment it's missing a critical feature: Azure AD authentication, which is available in the older single server SKUs.

Without this integration, VMs/Apps etc cannot utilize AAD managed identities to securely authenticate against the Flexible Server without using passwords. It's an important feature that I'm sure those who're on Single Server won't want to give up.

Hopefully this can be accomplished by the time Flexible Server goes GA, or at least soon after that.

  6. pl/python

When can we expect support for the PL/Python extension for the Azure Postgres Database. I would improve overall functionality massively.

  7. Service health notifications do not specify about PG minor version upgrades

Neither Service health notifications do specify nor Azure publishes details in the RDS portal about PG minor version upgrades. Please try to enhance the notifications or by any means of communication in providing more details to the end users.

  8. MSSQL to PostgreSQL Migration Tools

Current Azure Database Migration Guide does not support MSSQL to PostgreSQL migration. We hope this capability will be available in near future.

  9. Add service tag feature to whitelist a specific Azure service in Azure Database for PostgreSQL firewall

At the moment, Azure Database for PostgreSQL firewall can only be configured to "Allow Trusted Azure Services" and the whitelisting of IPs/IP ranges.

There are several scenarios where customers want to provide access to only a specific Azure service without configuring the IPs/IP ranges as depending upon the service, the number of IPs can be 100+ that is unwieldy and unmanageable to add.

Due to security reasons, customers can not allow access to all Azure Services to the DB.

One of the examples, Azure Function app running on Dynamic SKU. When the function makes an outbound call to the DB,…

  11. In PostgreSQL 11 "REINDEX DATABASE" command used to run concurrently

In PostgreSQL 11 "REINDEX DATABASE" command used to run concurrently, but in Azure PostgreSQL DB it doesn't. That's why I can't run the command - I can't make my server unresponsive for ~ 1 hour.

  12. Publish signed/trusted docker images that match hosted extensions.

For purposes of aligning development/testing of projects hosted on Azure, it would be nice if Microsoft provided docker images for PostgreSQL, perhaps using the Bitnami images as a baseline or guide for setup scripts/options, that match Azure's production versions and extensions.

As the default and bitnami PostgreSQL images don't include many of the extensions supported by Azure, it would be great if MS provided docker images that matched the hosted environment to ensure that a local/dev/qa environment can match Azure's production environment relatively closely.

  13. Azure Database for PostgreSQL - IoT Edge support

Similar to Azure SQL Database Edge - It would be great to have support for Azure Database for PostgreSQL running on IoT Edge.

  15. Allow per-role log settings

Due to the log_statement GUC being context superuser [1], it is not possible to set per-role logging; e.g. to log all data modifications of personalized accounts vs. application users. This makes auditing somewhat harder and it would be nice if there was a solution for this, though I understand this would likely mean changing upstream PostgreSQL

[1] This is modified to rds_superuser for RDS Postgres

  16. Citus worker node storage having a limit of 2TiB.

Why is the citus worker node storage having a limit of 2TiB. If one of my distributed column has data above 2TiB what is the strategy then. For eg. My distribution column is tenantId and for that tenantId there is data more than 2TiB.

  17. Performance Benchmarking Services from Azure Portal

We have been trying to move to PaaS from our IaaS set up but the benchmarking and one thing we learned from our experience was the approach one takes to do a real benchmarking and unfortunately it varies from person to person or team to team. Even though there are a lot of recommendations laid out in the community but it would awesome to have a service in house to do a benchmarking. So basically you pick the plan that suits best your consumption pattern best and run Performance Benchmarking against all Relational DB Services provided by Azure.

  19. Support Service Principal as Azure AD Administrator

Azure Database for PostgreSQL supports setting an Azure AD Administrator and login in using Azure AD identities.

However, the support is somewhat lacking compared to Azure SQL Database:

    • Configuring an Azure AD Administrator using an ARM template is not documented (though appears to work very similarly)

    • There does not appear to be a supported way of using a Service Principal, rather than a user, as the Azure AD Administrator for an instance.

The latter is supported in Azure SQL Database, and it is very useful for entirely automated flows. It would be great it support for it was added.

  20. LTR for backup extended to 10 yrs

35 days of max retention for Az Db for PG is too few for many customers. Moreover, the type of backup of the whole Postgres virtual server is not practical sometimes.
MS offers LTR for individual Az SQL DBs. They should offer something similar for individual Postgres DBs (pg_dump style) with PiTR restores in the short term and option of LTR cold backups.
