  1. Ability to use loopback IP in dblink as hostaddr

In AWS when using dblink, you can use loopback IP 127.0.0.1 as hostaddr when you are using cross database queries. When we migrate from AWS PostgreSQL to Azure Database PostgreSQL, we need to point the hostname to either the instance IP or server name. Hopefully this will be a new feature so that we can do the migration without changing the our codes every time we migrate to another server. For more details, here's the case ID 120031124003015.

  2. zombodb

ZomboDB extends PostgreSQL capabilities for FTS as it works pretty nicely with Elasticsearch. It works as a native PosgreSQL extension and its support PostgreSQL versions 10.x and 11.x.

Not having it as an extensions is one of the main reasons why we don't migrate from having databases in VMs to Azure Database for PostgreSQL.

  4. Add Support for PLV8 to Citus Cluster

Currently Plv8 extension is supported for individual Azure Postgresql Instances, but it is not supported for the Citus clusters. This makes it impossible for ISVs to rely on scaling their PostgreSql solutions via Azure if they're using plv8. Please support plv8 for Citus so that there is a scalability path available to architects and ISVs.

  8. periods extension

The SQL 2016 standard defines a native way of handling system-versioned temporal tables. The periods extension provides this functionality for PostgreSQL versions 9.5 - 12.0, until native support is added.

    https://github.com/xocolatl/periods

There is a Debian package available which can be installed:

    "sudo apt install postgresql-11-periods"

The extension can then be enabled using regular CREATE EXTENSION syntax.

I would love to see this added to Azure. There is clearly demand for this functionality; the thread below suggests adding support for the temporal_tables extension and has 24 upvotes. However, that extension is now outdated compared to the much shinier periods extension.

  10. pg_squeeze is an extension that removes unused space from a table and optionally sorts tuples according to particular index

    https://github.com/cybertec-postgresql/pgsqueeze
pgsqueeze is an extension that removes unused space from a table and
optionally sorts tuples according to particular index (as if CLUSTER [2]
command was executed concurrently with regular reads / writes). In fact we try
    to replace pg_repack [1] extension.

  12. Support for Custom Full Text Search Dictionaries

PostgreSQL supports so many great full text search capabilities that can be really handy in small to mid sized applications without adding the extra overhead of separate search services.

    https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.6/textsearch-dictionaries.html

When self-hosting PG you can add custom dictionaries, with custom synonym, thesaurus, stop word, and other stemming definitions. Currently Azure hosted PostgreSQL doesn't support this, as you'd need access to upload language and dictionary files to use in those definitions. For example, if you want a solid spellchecker via ispell or hunspell you can download those extensions and place them in the $SHAREDIR/tsearch_data directory on the PG server.

  14. ip4r extension

It would be great to have the ip4r extension available in the Azure Database for PostgreSQL service. We already use this extension in our self-managed psql service to use IP addresses as native objects. It is very useful for some IPAM engines like nipapd, etc.

For more information about this extension: https://github.com/RhodiumToad/ip4r

  19. Add support for auto_explain to collect access plans of the slow queries

auto_expalin would help us collect access plans of the queries which exceed a threshold of the query execution time.

  20. pgTAP support for application testing

We are working on migrating our app to Azure, and our app has unit/regression tests with using pgTAP [1].

I would like Azure PostgreSQL to support pgTAP to allow us for application compatibility test.
